For many, the highlight of the annual Mansfield Athletic Banquet was the announcement of the T. Franklin Boyd winners. The 2017 version of the all-sports banquet was held on May 9 with two of it’s most decorated seniors receiving the prestigious award.
Whittney Clark and Joseff Buccella were given the T. Franklin Boyd Tiger of the Year plaques. They were voted the top players above a very strong group of potential candidates.
The award is given each year to an outstanding male and female senior athlete. It is an award that considers athletic ability, academic aptitude, player integrity, and the spirit of the Tiger once rooted for by the late Mr. Boyd. It is voted on by Booster Club officers, a Mansfield administrator, Tiger coaches and selected teachers.
Clark received the Female Tiger of the Year award. She participated in numerous sports over her Mansfield athletic career while collecting All-District and All-State honors along the way. She had been part of championship teams, been recognized for high academic achievement, and had been applauded for service to community. This year she was on the third place conference volleyball team, district championship track team, and the state reaching softball squad.
Buccella took the Male Tiger of the Year award. He was selected because of achievements on and off the field of play. He was an outstanding player during competition, a valued student in the classroom, and a contributing member to community relations. Voters recognized him as one of the toughest players on the football field and one of the fastest on the track.
