The Waldron Police Department says it continues to actively investigate allegations that have generated concern throughout the community, emphasizing that the integrity of the investigation remains its highest priority.
On Friday, July 31, the department released the following statement:
“The WPD has been contacted by a number of concerned citizens regarding certain allegations. We are aware of the allegations and we are working with multiple law enforcement agencies in this open and active investigation, and cannot comment further.”
In a phone interview Monday, Aug. 3, Waldron Police Chief Horacio Gonzalez reiterated that he could not discuss details of the ongoing investigation. However, he said he wanted to reassure the public that protecting children and investigating sex abuse cases remain among the department’s highest priorities.
“Of all the cases I’ve worked, sex abuse cases have always been—and remain—my top priority,” Gonzalez said.
The chief also emphasized that thorough investigations require time to ensure any resulting criminal case can withstand scrutiny in court.
“I want people to understand that proper interviews and gathering of admissible evidence in court takes time,” Gonzalez said. “Otherwise, it jeopardizes the entire case.”
He said the department is committed to conducting a complete investigation and that carefully collecting evidence is essential to a successful prosecution.
“Some elements of cases now involve digital technology that we depend on the assistance of other agencies to help us process,” Gonzalez continued. “We need to be able to fully and properly conduct interviews and gather all evidence in cases in order to make sure cases stand up in the judicial system.”
Gonzalez concluded by assuring the community that investigators are working diligently throughout the process.
“We want the community to know we are diligently working to keep our children and our families safe,” he said.
