On Thursday, August 14, The American Legion Post 121, along with the American Legion Auxiliary members, held their monthly meeting. Students from area schools who attended Boys State and Girls State earlier in the summer were invited to be recognized. Based in Paris, American Legion Post 121 and Auxiliary, have committed to sponsoring area students for this annual program where young men and women learn more about government, leadership, citizenship, and service.
The dinner meeting began with the singing of the national anthem, let by Magazine students Abby Crandall, Kauree Bennett, and Daniel Green. Post Commander Ron Redding then recognized the Missing Man Table, set to honor service member missing in action, prisoners of war, and the fallen who cannot join the meal. All enjoyed a delicious meal prepared and served by the Magazine cafeteria staff.
Students from Magazine, Paris, and Subiaco. were presented with a certificate to recognize their attendance at Boys State and Girls State. Each were given an opportunity to address the meeting and share their experience. Daniel Green, a senior at Magazine High School, shared how he was elected by his peers at Boys State as Lieutenant Governor. This position serves as the president of the senate, where he oversaw a mock legislative session at the state capitol. All expressed their gratitude to the American Legion and Auxiliary for giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Also attending the meeting was Arkansas State Senator Brad Simon. Simon spoke on the importance of the Boys State and Girls State programs in developing future leaders. He was present at the capitol during the mock legislative sessions and met with Green and many other young men.
American Legion Post 121 plans to continue sponsoring area students for years to come.
