When two high-powered offenses collide, fireworks are expected and Mansfield and Lavaca brought plenty of offensive firepower into their Friday, September 25th showdown. Through four games, the Tigers had bulldozed their way to 180 points, while Lavaca had taken to the air for 163, establishing the teams as two of the 3A’s most prolific scoring attacks in non-conference play. Their contrasting offensive styles hyped the matchup into more of an attraction than a game, but the deciding question was not which offense would shine brightest, it was which defense would play lights out. Behind massive hits and a literal last minute surge, Mansfield was able to flip the switch to secure a 38-34 conference victory over Lavaca.
Mansfield opened up the game on offense and looked to move the target on Lavaca’s hopes of an upset. Mansfield gained a first down in just two plays, but the third play was not the charm as Lavaca striped ball away to create a turnover on the Tigers first drive. The Golden Arrows offense could not hold on to the momentum that the turnover gifted them though as Mansfield forced Lavaca to punt the ball back. Mansfield put the ball on the ground on the first two plays of their new drive but luckily the Tigers were able to recover the ball both times. Jeramiah Burton and Layton Pyles had a couple of solid runs which sucked Lavaca’s defense into the box to stop the Tigers power game. That was just what the doctor ordered as Silas Burton hit Pyles for a 33-yard pass to score a Tiger touchdown. Colton Moore tacked on the two-point conversion to give Mansfield an 8-0 lead with 7:02 left in the first quarter.
Mansfield’s offense proved it could strike at any moment, but the Tigers defense refused to be outdone. On Lavaca’s ensuing possession, Isaac Carson intercepted an off-target pass to set Mansfield up at its own 34-yard line. Colton Moore powered ahead for six yards before Silas Burton broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed, but the score extended the Tigers lead to 14–0. Lavaca answered by giving the Tigers a dose of their own medicine with a determined 12-play scoring drive that ended in a Lavaca 20-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick was good which cut the Tigers lead to 14–7 which ended the opening quarter of play.
When there are two high-powered offenses on the field, fans expect plenty of points and Mansfield delivered on the first offensive play of the second quarter. Jeramiah Burton burst free for a 49-yard Tiger touchdown, and Colton Moore powered across the goal line for the two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 22–7 lead. Lavaca responded with a seven-play touchdown drive, trimming Mansfield’s advantage to 22–13. The Tigers tried to regain control before halftime, but the Golden Arrows defense refused to surrender a big play. Seth Burton, Jeramiah Burton, and Colton Moore each picked up positive yardage, yet Lavaca held firm and kept Mansfield from breaking the game open any further.
With 3:40 remaining in the half, Lavaca stopped Mansfield on downs and quickly turned the defensive stand into points. The Golden Arrows converted a fourth down and followed that up with a touchdown. The extra-point attempt failed but left Mansfield clinging to a 22–19 lead with 0:25 seconds remaining in the half. The Tigers then threw an interception on the ensuing possession, giving Lavaca one final opportunity to take the lead. A defensive pass interference against Mansfield provided the Golden Arrows with an untimed play, and Lavaca took full advantage by firing a touchdown pass into the end zone as the half expired. The dramatic score sent the Golden Arrows into halftime with a 26–22 lead.
Mistakes, miscues, and missed opportunities plagued Mansfield throughout the first half, leaving the Tigers high-powered offense sputtering and their defense searching for answers. Lavaca’s offense capitalized to take a 26–22 lead into halftime and opened the second half with possession of the ball, but Mansfield’s defense returned with renewed intensity. Hayden Miles, Clayton Garrison, and Treven Hattabaugh helped shut down the Golden Arrows’ opening drive, forcing a punt on fourth down and thirteen yards to go. Even with the big stop, momentum remained up for grabs as eight combined penalties kept teams from taking full control of the game. Colton Moore kept the Tigers moving on the ensuing drive with a series of punishing runs that pushed Mansfield to the 30-yard line. Facing fourth down with 0:50 left in the third quarter, Jeramiah Burton broke past the line to gain and raced all the way to the end zone for a Tiger touchdown. Burton then powered in the two-point conversion, putting Mansfield back on top, 30–26 to close out the third quarter.
Lavaca started off the final quarter with the ball and drove to the goal line in just six plays. But the Tigers built a wall in the center of the goal line to force the Golden Arrows into a fourth down situation. The problem with walls is that you can go over them and that’s exactly what Lavaca did as the Golden Arrows lobbed a pass over the Tigers great defensive wall to score. The two-point conversion was good giving Lavaca a 34-26 lead over the defending State Champs. Mansfield’s offense had exactly eight minutes to prevent a major upset, but after three quarters against a Lavaca defense that played just as physical as the Tigers, they knew it wouldn’t be easy. That is unless Jeramiah Burton finds a seem in that particular physical defense. Not only was a seem found by Burton, a Tiger 48-yard touchdown was also found and added to the scoreboard. Colton Moore added the two-point conversion to give Mansfield a 38-34 lead with 6:20 left in the game.
Offense may win games, but defense wins championships and on Friday night, both Mansfield and Lavaca looked capable of making a title run. With the outcome hanging in the balance, Lavaca’s offense took the field looking to reclaim the lead, but Mansfield’s defense was ready for the challenge. Easton Foley delivered the first tackle, Hayden Miles followed with another stop, and Jeramiah Burton brought down the ball carrier on third down to leave the Golden Arrows facing fourth and seven yards to go with 4:22 remaining in the game. Lavaca’s fourth down pass downfield fell incomplete, but a penalty gave the Golden Arrows new life. Mansfield’s defense answered again, forcing another fourth down before closing every escape route and stopping the conversion attempt with no flags on the field. The turnover on downs returned the ball to the Tigers with 3:01 left and Mansfield’s offense drained the remaining clock to survive Lavaca’s upset bid with a thrilling 38–34 victory.
The Tigers and Golden Arrows conference opener proved one thing to every team in the 3A. Although the 3A-1 has changed members in 2026, the teams in the conference are all still contenders. Lavaca pushed the defending State Champions to the absolute limit Friday night and are definitely in the hunt for future success. As for Mansfield, they never gave up. The Tigers faced a team that gave them all they could handle and handed it all right back. For a Tigers team that has injuries to starters, only boasts five seniors on the roster, and has not had a cupcake on their schedule to date, that’s quite impressive. But impressive will still have to improve as the Tigers next opponent has proven that they are no longer at the bottom of the 3A ocean. The Cedarville Pirates have already matched their total wins from the past two seasons combined and sit atop the 3A-1 with a 4-1 overall record. While Mansfield’s three wins have all come at home, they must now travel to Pirates Cove on Friday, October 2nd to face off against a team whose mascot craves gold….the Tigers Championship gold that is.
