After a 2-2 non-conference start, the Mansfield Tigers found their footing in conference play. Even with a slow start against Lavaca, the Tigers have continued to get increasingly better each game. Mansfield’s offense has outscored their first four conference opponents 216-81 en route to a 4-0 conference record. Now comes a Friday night test against a familiar hurdle: the Greenland Pirates, a foe against whom the Tigers have only recently begun to gain a toehold on. Even though the statistics may show Mansfield running away with this one, the Tigers are in prime territory of being caught up in a possible trap game too.

For two decades, Greenland held the upper hand in its rivalry with Mansfield. The Pirates owned a 13-5 advantage against the Tigers, making the matchup a game Mansfield fans had come to dread. Then Mansfield Head Coach, Whit Overton, arrived in 2023 and the rivalry took a dramatic turn. In his first season as Mansfield’s head coach, Overton led the Tigers to a then school-record 65-0 rout on Greenland’s home field. Mansfield has kept control ever since, following that breakthrough with a 66-20 victory in 2024 and a 54-6 win in 2025. While the Tigers have stacked up a few wins in the series, Greenland has paddled against the losing records currents. This year appeared to offer a different wave for Greenland though as the Pirates opened 4-1 overall and rolled past Northwest Arkansas rival West Fork, signaling a possible resurgence. But consecutive blowout losses to Lavaca and Charleston have stalled that momentum, leaving Greenland in shallow waters again.

Mansfield on the other hand doesn’t seem to be doing anything but improve. The Tigers face one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the state and even though two losses can’t be shined up as anything but losses, the battles didn’t exactly hurt either. Instead, Mansfield gained from those losses to defeat the 2024 4A State Champions for their non-conference finale. While their offense has been stellar since the start of the season, the Tigers’ defense is finally starting to catch up making Mansfield a true problem for upcoming opponents. The Tigers’ defense has been imperative in conference victories, where Mansfield has averaged 54-20 in their victories which is hands down better than the 45-44 average they had in non-conference play. The Tigers have five players in double digits for solo tackles and as a team have eight sacks, eight turnovers, 67 quarterback hurries, and 37 tackles for loss so far this season. True, there is still room for improvement on the Tigers’ defensive side of the ball, but not much.

With Greenland struggling to generate some wind behind their offense and Mansfield’s defense surfing a tsunami right now, Mansfield seems to have the nodical edge going into the matchup this Friday night. But if you go back to the Tigers’ stellar offense, you’ll notice the true rogue wave that is headed for Greenland’s sidelines: Mansfield’s rushing attack. Mansfield has accumulated 3,032 rushing yards in just eight games this season averaging 379 yards per game. Ground and pound sophomore, Colton Moore, has pounded out 573 yards and nine touchdowns while the junior Burton Brothers, Jeramiah and Silas, have combined for 1,661 and 22 scores on the year. Junior quarterback Jubal Parks has been out for the past couple of games, but even that hasn’t slowed the Tigers down. Freshman, Elijah Burton, has stepped in and showed out over the past two games with five carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns while also slinging the pigskin to gain 229 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

On paper, Mansfield holds a clear edge heading into Friday night’s showdown with Greenland. But numbers don’t wear a helmet and in the 3A-1, nothing is guaranteed. Just ask Lavaca. After pushing Mansfield to their limits in the conference opener and outscoring its previous two opponents 100-20, the Golden Arrows appeared to be serious contenders. Then Cedarville delivered a stunning 21-6 upset last week, despite having lost to Mansfield and Charleston by a combined score of 86-28. That result offers a timely reminder for the Tigers, who face potential distractions of their own. Senior Night festivities await Friday, and a big matchup with Charleston looms next week. That is a combination that could give Greenland an opening if Mansfield looks beyond the task at hand. If the Tigers stay focused and execute, they could take control early. If they don’t, another 3A-1 upset could find its way into The Jungle Friday night.
