Engaged citizens of Bonanza braved a chilly Saturday morning, October 17, to hear from candidates seeking positions in the November 3 general election during the Resident News Roundtable 2.0, held outdoors at the pavilion in Bonanza City Park.

The event, organized by local business owner Jill Jeffries Hartle and moderated by Don Cloud Davis, provided an opportunity for residents to hear directly from candidates for mayor and city council about issues affecting their community.

Among the central topics were outdated city ordinances, enforcement concerns, municipal finances and the challenges associated with growth as neighboring Fort Smith continues to expand toward the small community.

Despite differing perspectives on how to address those issues, the candidates demonstrated a shared respect for one another and an interest in Bonanza’s future.

Candidates Address Community Concerns

Three candidates are seeking the Ward 1, Position 2 alderman seat: Maria Christenberry, Debra Collins and Alan Freeman.

In Ward 2, Position 1, Katherine Peerson is facing Jennifer Norris, who was not present for the event.

Ward 3, Position 1 candidates Daniel Lunsford and Marie Robinson also participated.

Unopposed alderman candidates Jerry Nixon and Matt Brennen were present, along with mayoral candidates Bill Collins and Robert “Pappy” Crouch.

Throughout the discussion, candidates addressed the need to review existing ordinances, some of which were described as outdated or no longer practical for the community.

The discussion centered on whether those ordinances should be enforced as written, revised to reflect current needs or removed altogether.

Budgetary concerns were another recurring theme, with candidates acknowledging the importance of managing limited municipal resources while addressing the needs of residents.

Growth also emerged as a significant issue. As Fort Smith continues to develop toward Bonanza, candidates discussed the challenges of maintaining the community’s small-town identity while preparing for potential changes and increased demands on city services.

Moderator Davis offered his perspective on the importance of growth, stating, “If your town isn’t growing, it is dying.”

Respect and Community Unity Highlight Discussion

One of the notable aspects of the morning was the respectful tone maintained among candidates, even those competing for the same positions.

Incumbent Alderman Daniel Lunsford expressed confidence in his opponent, Marie Robinson, saying, “If I am not elected, Marie will be great.”

His remarks reflected the cooperative spirit demonstrated throughout much of the event.

Ward 1 candidate Maria Christenberry emphasized the importance of community involvement, particularly through events that bring residents together and showcase what Bonanza has to offer.

“Events is a big deal,” Christenberry stated. “We can bring people in and show how great our town is.”

She continued by emphasizing the importance of kindness, compassion and maintaining positive relationships regardless of the election’s outcome.

“Loving our neighbors, and being caring showing that, we have to love our neighbors, and that will build our city up,” she said.

Christenberry also reminded those attending that the community will remain connected long after Election Day.

“After November 4, we’re still going to be neighbors, we’re still a community…we have to support each other.”

Unopposed alderman candidate Jerry Nixon echoed that sentiment, acknowledging that Bonanza faces many of the same challenges experienced by other small communities.

“We need a lot of stuff, but all small towns do,” Nixon stated. “But I am running to be a voice for the people. If you have a concern, I want to bring that to the council.”

His comments reinforced a recurring theme of the discussion: the importance of listening to residents and ensuring their concerns are represented in local government.

Mayoral Candidates Discuss Experience and Future Plans

The two candidates seeking the mayor’s office, incumbent Bill Collins and challenger Robert “Pappy” Crouch, discussed their respective approaches to leading the city.

Collins highlighted accomplishments from his past four years in office and expressed his desire to continue working on projects and initiatives already underway.

He emphasized the importance of seeing those efforts through and continuing the work his administration has begun.

Crouch, meanwhile, expressed an interest in taking a closer look at the city’s financial operations.

He said he wants to “dig into the budget” and advocate for the projects and services residents believe are most important to Bonanza.

Their remarks reflected different approaches to addressing the city’s needs, with Collins emphasizing continuity and completion of ongoing efforts and Crouch focusing on reviewing finances and responding to citizen priorities.

Looking Toward November 3

Although candidates offered varying perspectives on municipal operations, the morning’s discussion revealed several common concerns, particularly the need to address outdated ordinances, manage city finances responsibly and prepare for future growth.

The event also highlighted the importance of citizen involvement in local government, as residents gathered to learn more about the individuals seeking to represent them.

The respectful exchanges among candidates served as a reminder that local elections involve neighbors, community members and individuals who will continue sharing the same community after the votes are counted.

With Election Day approaching on November 3, Bonanza voters will have the opportunity to determine who will lead their city and represent their interests on the city council.
