Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July and Semiquincentennial celebration! I feel like I have been all over Florida and back in a day. I’ve been very busy.
Can y’all believe I was alive and actually remember the 1976 celebration? I was about to turn 16 years old. Yes, I’m old as dirt! My son, Jacob, used to call me “Oldielocks.”
I remember thinking my grandparents were old when I was little, and they probably weren’t much older than I am now.
My Granny Morgan was the best granny in the world. She was an amazing cook, and I loved going to her house. I also loved when she came to ours.
She always had something wise—or mischievous—to say. She had all kinds of old sayings and clichés that would make us laugh.
Every time we had beans for dinner, she would say, “When a body meets a body in a bunch of beans, can a body tell a body what a body means?”
When Mom was sweeping, Granny would say, “Don’t let her sweep under your feet or you’ll never get married.” I believed her!
And every single time someone asked, “Pass the mustard,” she’d grin and say, “Mus what?” We’d answer, “Turd!” She thought that was the funniest thing in the world.
My granny also wore a hairpiece. That was a thing back in those days. Her hair was thinning, so she always wore a hairpiece with a hairnet over it.
She had a sister we called Aunt Exie. She and her husband lived in Oregon and came to visit about once a year, so the whole family would get together. Her husband was Filipino and a preacher, and he always wanted Aunt Exie to tow the line.
Guess what? That didn’t happen.
She was always telling jokes and had a funny story to share. I’ve always said I’m a lot like my Great-Aunt Exie. Her husband was forever getting onto her for telling stories, but they were all true. It never fazed her one bit.
One thing I never realized until I was an adult was that Granny dipped snuff. I had no clue what that smell was growing up—I just thought it was her smell.
She was never without a handkerchief or her purse. I guess that was another thing folks always carried back then.
There are so many funny sayings people use. Like, “I seen it with my own eyes.” Well… do you normally look through someone else’s eyes?
Or how about, “I slept like a baby.” Most babies don’t sleep very well!
Now if someone said, “I slept like a man in a recliner with a remote in his hand,” I’d understand that.
My husband could be sound asleep, but the second I’d try to sneak the remote out of his hand, he’d instantly wake up and say, “I was watching that!”
No, sir… you were not.
Love those husbands of yours, ladies. I sure do miss mine.
Have a blessed week, and don’t sneak out behind the shed and get a dip of snuff. Can you tell I watch too much The Andy Griffith Show?
Since this weather has been so hot, this cake sure sounds like a perfect summertime dessert.
Strawberry Cake
Cake
1 box strawberry cake mix
1 (6-ounce) box strawberry Jell-O
1 (10-ounce) carton frozen strawberries, thawed (You can chop them into more of a glaze if you’d like, but you don’t have to. I have strawberries in the freezer, so I just use what I have.)
Combine the cake mix and Jell-O, then prepare the cake according to the directions on the box. Allow the cake to cool completely. Spread the strawberries over the top of the cooled cake.
Icing
1½ cups sugar
1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
1 (8-ounce) container Cool Whip
Mix the sugar and sour cream together until smooth. Fold in the Cool Whip and mix well. Spread over the strawberries and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Have a blessed week, and remember to always tell your loved ones how much you love them.
