Hello everyone!! We sure got a nice, much needed rain. Fall is in the air. I’m getting ready for Halloween. I am a little behind but I do have 8 cases of cotton candy, Fun Dip, Ring Pops, fruit snacks for the littles and popcorn balls. My nephew is bringing chocolate candy bars. This week I have been thinking about funny sayings that my mom, aunts and granny used to say.
Let me tell ya’ll living in the South is something to be thankful for. If my mom was talking about someone doing something that was dumb or saying something that was stupid sounding to her she would say, “That is just ignorance gone to seed.” Me and my niece Kelly Y used to just crack up when she would say that. If your mom ever said, “We’ll see,” just put that in your mind as a big fat no!! Not happening.
If your mom especially my mom and now this is me, “I’m fixing to go to bed or hit the hay,” that means in a couple hours I might but right now I’m going to watch a movie or pop popcorn sure not going to bed. If you drove by my mom’s house at ten p.m. or two a.m. it was just as bright as if it was daylight. Always action at my mom’s. She loved to stay up half the night.
If my mom went somewhere and we wanted to go she would say, “I will be right back.” Uh big no on that we wouldn’t see her til dark. If a parent or grandparent ever said, “I’m just going to sit down for a minute,” mark it down they were taking a nap, period. I also do this same thing.
If we were on the road going somewhere and we asked, “How much longer?” her or Dad’s reply, “We will be there in a little bit” that meant anywhere from five minutes to five hours. The one I always hated when I was little was, “If you don’t stop crying, I’m going to give you something to cry about!” Why would a parent say that?? If Daddy ever said dreckly that meant later on this evening. I also was sent at the age of five into Bill’s Market in Booneville to buy cigarettes, Raleigh Filter Kings, that is a thing of the past.
We also rode in the back of pick up trucks just all over the back even on Highway 71 and nobody cared. We would get to our destination and be sunburned and wind blown but we didn’t care we wanted to. If we went anywhere especially Ft. Smith Momma always put ice cubes in a fruit jar and filled it with water so we would have something to drink. Funny thing we all drank out of the same fruit jar. We didn’t have no fancy Stanley cups back then. I hope ya’ll enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
Have a great week and don’t blink it will be Thanksgiving, I have got to do something about this turkey neck of mine or they will be hunting me at Thanksgiving.
This recipe should be good with this cold snap we are having.
Easy hamburger soup
1 pound ground beef
1 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced (I use the kind in the jar)
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
3½ cups beef broth
1 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes
1 can tomato soup
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 bay leaf
3 cups frozen mixed vegetables
Salt and pepper to taste
Brown the ground beef, diced onion and garlic, drain excess fat.
Stir in the potatoes, beef broth, diced tomatoes, tomato soup, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, bay leaf and salt and pepper.
Cover and simmer for ten minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, cover and simmer for another 15–20 minutes til potatoes are tender, discard bay leaf and make you a pan of cornbread and enjoy.
