The Mansfield Jr High Tigers came out of the gate like a team on a mission this season, storming to a 7-0 start with dominant performances every step of the way. The offense piled up a mountain of 244 points in the first seven games, while the defense held opponents to just 83. But football has a way of testing even the strongest teams, and as the hype grew, the trials came. Injuries and players moving up to the next level were challenges no one could control, and they cut into Mansfield’s depth. Instead of folding, the Tigers answered the call. Young players stepped into bigger roles, learned on the fly, and stepped up better than most teams ever could.

Experience may have dipped, but their hearts never did. In moments like these, all a coach can ask is that his players fight with everything they have, and this group delivered. Against Paris, they battled through a tight one and came out on top. In Greenland, they fell just short in a close game, but they fought. On Thursday, October 29th, Mansfield welcomed the undefeated Charleston Tigers and came up on the wrong end of a 35-0 score. The scoreboard didn’t go their way; the Tigers did exactly what was asked of them. They fought.

Charleston got the ball first and sent their high-powered offense onto the field. Like Mansfield, Charleston had spent the season shredding defenses and putting up points at will, and that’s exactly what they planned to do to the Tigers. Charleston opened with a slew of hard-charging runs to move the ball against the Mansfield defense. On the fourth snap of the game, the Tigers’ defense punched back and forced a fumble. But the ball bounced Charleston’s way, allowing the offense to keep possession. Three plays later, Charleston’s quarterback threw a strike for a 37-yard touchdown. The extra point was good putting Mansfield was behind the eight ball early, trailing 7-0.

The Tigers offense trotted onto the field looking to even the score against Charleston. Mansfield picked up free yardage right away when Charleston jumped offsides on the first snap, but free yards are the easy kind. Rushing yards would have to be earned the hard way. Running backs Keaton Welch and Ryder Pennington learned that firsthand, as Charleston’s defense swarmed into the backfield and met them with bone-jarring hits. Quarterback Peyton James tried to spark the passing game, but Charleston brought the heat, and a tipped pass at the line stalled the drive and forced a Mansfield punt. Charleston wasted no time going for the Tigers’ throat. A 59-yard bomb carried them all the way to the one-yard line, and one snap later, Charleston punched it into the end zone. The extra point split the uprights, and Mansfield found itself in a 14-0 hole at the end of the first quarter.

Mansfield was able to get some heat out of Kannon Copeland’s feet on the first play of their new drive as Copeland burnt his way for a 10-yard run. Not a bad second quarter start, but what was bad was the Tigers stalling out after the big gain. Mansfield was forced to punt the ball away again and again, Charleston capitalized. Mansfield’s defense stiffened up and caused a fumble on the second snap of Charleston’s new possession. The ball slipped, dipped, and tripped its way all over the ground before Brantley Whittaker wrapped it up for Mansfield. The Tigers had great field position, but Charleston repaid Mansfield’s turnover with a forced fumble of their own. Mansfield’s defense was able to make Charleston punt for the first time since the black and white Tigers game against Ozark, but that was the highest high of the half for the Tigers. Charleston would put in one more score before the end of the half sending the teams into halftime with Mansfield on the lower side of a 21-0 score.

The second half belonged to Charleston. Mansfield couldn’t get anything going on offense or come up with a stop on defense, and Charleston cruised to a 35-0 win over the Tigers. Back-to-back losses aren’t how any team wants to close out a season, but sometimes that’s the way the ball bounces. The Tigers wrapped up the year with a 7-2 record and will send a whopping 14 players up to the Sr. High ranks next fall. That’s where the bright side shines through for the young Jr. High Tigers who were thrown into the fire down the stretch. Every snap they took against battle-tested teams like Greenland and Charleston will carry over into next season. That gives the 2027 Tigers something every coach dreams of: experience. The fight is already there, and this group proved it all season long. Add experience to that fight, and the next chapter of Mansfield Jr. High football is set up for even bigger things.
