Nothing matches the electricity and atmosphere of high school sports. Unlike the college and professional ranks, these athletes aren’t chasing paychecks or playing beneath the glare of a national media spotlight. They take the field for themselves, their teammates, and the towns stitched across the front of their jerseys, all for the chance to play the game they love. On Friday, October 2nd, Mansfield traveled to Cedarville for its second conference showdown of the season, facing a Pirates program that has seemingly risen from the gridiron depths overnight.

Cedarville had the stage set for a homecoming upset. The Pirates entered Friday night with a 4–1 overall record, armed with home-field advantage and a packed crowd ready to see them take down the defending Class 3A state champions. To say Cedarville was fired up for Mansfield’s arrival would be an understatement. The Tigers, meanwhile, had battled through a punishing nonconference schedule, were still searching for their first road victory of the season, and were coming off a heart-stopping 38–34 win over Lavaca. With the home and visitor stands packed and the atmosphere buzzing, it was finally time to find out where both teams stood in the 3A-1.

Mansfield won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving Cedarville’s offense the first opportunity to unleash its firepower. Starting at their own 18-yard line, the Pirates wasted little time setting sail downfield. On the opening snap, Cedarville reached deep into its bag of tricks, striking with a reverse flea-flicker that moved the ball to the 38-yard line. Mansfield’s defense stiffened and forced a fourth-down situation, but a costly penalty handed the Pirates the yardage they needed to extend the drive. Cedarville kept their cannons firing with a steady barrage of runs and passes before finally blasting into the end zone. The Pirates’ two-point conversion attempt came up short, but the upset bid was officially underway as Cedarville grabbed a 6–0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

Trailing early, Mansfield’s offense needed to show that the defending champions would not simply walk the plank. Colton Moore and Jeramiah Burton took turns pounding the Cedarville defense, clawing their way to the 43-yard line in just four plays. With the Pirates’ eyes locked in the backfield for a moment too long, Jubal Parks made them pay, firing a strike to a wide-open Layton Pyles for a 43-yard Tiger touchdown. Moore then powered across the goal line for the two-point conversion, giving Mansfield an 8–6 lead. Cedarville answered immediately. On the first play of the ensuing drive, the Pirates broke loose for 69 yards, racing all the way to the Mansfield 10-yard line. Two plays later, Cedarville was back in front, reclaiming a 13–8 advantage with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter.

Even though the momentum was anyone’s at that point, Mansfield wasn’t about to fold. With the Tigers needing a quick answer, Silas Burton proved to be the spark the offense needed. Burton burst free for a 19-yard run, then hauled in a pass from Jubal Parks and raced for another 17-yards. The back-to-back strikes moved Mansfield to the 29-yard line, where Colton Moore powered his way into the end zone. In just three plays, the Tigers had stormed back in front, reclaiming a narrow 14–13 lead. Everyone knew Mansfield could score, but the concern was could they stop their from opponents scoring. Luckily, Cedarville’s playbook was repetitive and defenders Layton Pyles, Clayton Garrison, and Seth Buton read the gameplan word for word to force the Pirates to punt on their next possession. The Tigers new drive started at the two-yard line with just a few seconds left in the quarter. A few seconds was all it took for Jeramiah Burton though as Burton shot through the Pirates defense for a 90-yard Tiger touchdown. Colton Moore added the bonus two points to end the frits quarter with Mansfield leading Cedarville 22-13.

Cedarville fielded the ensuing kickoff and immediately flashed its speed, breaking into the open field on what appeared destined to become a touchdown return. Mansfield kicker Dieuphny Smithson had other plans, delivering a touchdown-saving hit that prevented a special-teams disaster. Michael Carter and Jeramiah Burton led the Tigers defense to force Cedarville to punt again. Cedarville’s kicking game remained a bright spot, however, as another booming punt pinned Mansfield deep in their own territory with a mountain of field in front of them. That is a daunting challenge for most players—but Silas Burton is not most players. On the Tigers’ first snap of the possession, Burton slipped through a crease in the Pirates’ defense and exploded for 78 yards, setting Mansfield up at the Cedarville 5-yard line. Colton Moore handled the rest, powering across the goal line for the touchdown before adding the two-point conversion. In the blink of an eye, Mansfield had stretched its advantage to a commanding 30–13 with 8:34 remaining in the first half.

The game’s blistering pace began to cool in the second quarter as both defenses settled in and found their footing. On-field confusion beyond the players’ control, along with a handful of mental-mistake penalties, added to a sluggish stretch of play. Even amid the chaos, Mansfield’s Silas Burton supplied a boost to the on field play that Tigers needed, breaking free and setting sail for a 68-yard touchdown. The extra-point attempt missed the mark, but Burton’s explosive score stretched Mansfield’s lead to 36–13. The Tigers defense did their job again on Cedarville’s next possession as Mansfield took over deep in their own territory at the 29-yard line. Again, with a lot of field in front of them, the tigers had to work hard to score again before the end of the half. With just thirteen seconds to go, Jeramiah Burton rolled 71-yards downfield before being pushed out of bounds at the six-yard line. Unfortunately, the clock was not on the Tigers side though as the half ended with Mansfield leading Cedarville, 36-13.

The second half opened beneath the same cloud of unfortunate chaos that had settled over the end of the first. As fans, announcers, and coaches tried to make sense of the situation, the athletes on both sidelines displayed remarkable composure and maturity. With emotions threatening to boil over, it was the Mansfield and Cedarville players who held the game together, remaining focused and carrying themselves with the discipline and sportsmanship the moment demanded. Mansfield sophomore Layton Pyles supplied the Tigers’ biggest offensive spark of the third quarter, breaking loose for a 54-yard touchdown run, while senior Dalton Knowles made his presence felt with a series of punishing second-half tackles. Defensive lineman, Michael Carter, even came up with an impressive big man interception late in the fourth quarter. Still, neither team was able to recapture the electric on-field excitement of the opening half. When the final whistle sounded, Mansfield had once again shown why they are the defending champions, closing out the game with a 42–20 victory over Cedarville.

The build up for this game was made legit with the on-field play by both Mansfield and Cedarville. The Tigers earned their first win away from The Jungle and did so in dominant fashion while the Pirates proved that their accension towards becoming a 3A-1 contender isn’t just forum talk. Yes, the game was marred and possibly overshadowed by extra events but hats off to both programs for giving it their all for four quarters and proved that football is their game, not anyone else’s. Cedarville will have an opportunity to prove themselves again next week as they head to Charleston for another showdown against a top tier Tiger team while Mansfield puts their title on the line when they host the Paris Eagles on Friday, October 9th.
