The 2025 Mansfield Tigers set multiple school and State records while ending their careers with a perfect 14-0 record. Leading the way were ten astonishing seniors who accumulated a 36-6 overall record in their high school careers. While the 2025 seniors will likely never be forgotten, they will not be on the field in 2026. Instead, a new set of seniors will step into the empty shoes left behind. It’s never easy to try to outdo perfection, but it’s the challenge of doing exactly that that has the 2026 seniors eager to turn on their own spotlight. You better grab some shades because Dalton Knowles, Nathan Dyer, Caiden Whittaker, Dieuphny Smithson, and Chandler Whisman are going to light up the field in 2026.
Mansfield will suit up half as many seniors as they did in 2025, as the Tigers go from 10 leaders to 5. Only suiting up half of what a team had the year prior can be nearly impossible for some programs, but this group is a lot like Coach Whit Overton’s first group of seniors when he became the head coach at Mansfield in 2023. The difference between the 2023 Tiger seniors who went 11-3 and made it to the State Semifinals and the 2026 seniors is experience in the system. Dalton Knowles, Nathan Dyer, Caiden Whittaker, Dieuphny Smithson, and Chandler Whisman have bought into Coach Overton’s program mentality for a couple of years now and know what it takes to earn every inch of the field. They say knowledge is power and these boys know what it takes to win football games.
At the Tigers’ media day, RNN pulled the seniors aside for a group interview. While fans can read what they said in this very article, what fans can’t do is see the demeanor on the Tigers’ faces when answering those questions. The look for every question was a quick smile, then a straight-faced confident answer. Everyone across all media platforms has been asking the same question, so the first question for the senior Tigers was very simple. Do you think you guys can fill the shoes of the 2025 seniors? You could tell that wasn’t the first time they were asked such a question and with a smirk on his face, senior Dalton Knowles stepped up and confidently said, “Oh yeah”. Knowles continued by saying, “We have the same mentality as we had last year. We got a taste of what it’s like to win a State Championship and every one of us is hungry for another. I think this team as a whole is locked in and ready to do it again”. Technically, Knowles played against State Championship caliber athletes daily last year on the Tigers practice scout team and held ample time on special teams on game day so if anyone knows what it’s like to go against the best, it would be him.
Wideouts Chandler Whisman and Caiden Whittaker hold the same confidence when asked if they can step into their own spotlight. As with Knowles, they faced off against the 2025 seniors in practices so if they could challenge former Tiger athletes like former wideouts Joseph Carter and Cooper Edwards last year, they have faith they can overcome any opponent in 2026. Whisman and Whittaker know the ultimate goal is a repeat of the State Championship, but in the past few years, it has become a well-known fact that the Tigers don’t pass much. So why would receivers even think they can replicate such success? Chandler Whisman was able to come up with yet another perfect Mansfield mentality answer. Simply stated by the “wise man” himself, it’s teamwork. “We have great communication and know exactly what our jobs are. We work well as a team and that is everything”. A much quieter, yet still confident Whittaker seconded Chandler’s statement but added, “We’re learning to play smarter. We are learning the playbook and our opponents on a daily basis. This whole team is very serious about our success this year”.
Possibly the biggest feat to overcome for Mansfield this upcoming season is losing their entire offensive and defensive line to graduation. Look it up in any article or interview that has been put out since the State Championship game itself, replacing the near-perfect 2025 linemen is a huge hurdle for the Tigers. So, what can Mansfield do to fill the roles of players like Ethan Martin, James Bausley, Cadien Ore, Logan Ore, and Zander Walters? Senior, Dieuphny Smithson, doesn’t think that he and his crew of linemen can step into the footsteps of those great athletes. To be honest, he doesn’t want to either. Even though Smithson is going into only his second year in the program, Dieuphny and his trench busting partners are leaning on a higher power of the game. ” The way our coaches teach us makes it so that it’s hard for us to not want to give our everything to get better. They’re honest with both the good and the bad and that’s what we need”. Smithson continued by saying, “Me personally, I feel like I have to give everything on every play in practice for them and my team. We’re going to be very tough because of our coaches”.
One senior not in the mix during the Tigers’ media day was Nathan Dyer. The 6’2 211-pound lineman missed the entirety of summer practices. That would seem like a huge chink in the Tigers’ offensive line armor. How does trench warfare even work without the warriors themselves showing up? Well, Dyer was preparing for his future wars both on and off the field of play. Dyer entered early enlistment into the United States Army. Let’s just say spending a summer at Fort Jackson in South Carolina for basic training won’t have Dyer coming back to the team “soft” or “out of shape”. While Dyer was not available for a quote for obvious reasons, his return quote will likely be “Hooah, Go Tigers“! With Dyer and Smithson leading underclassmen such as Clayton Garrison, Easton Foley, Michael Carter, Timmy Norton, Travis Gilmer, Mason Bryant, and Hayden Miles into battle, it is easy to see that the Tigers aren’t rebuilding their line, they’re merely reloading and taking aim for another shot.
These fierce five will face a daunting task as they will start the season with what many consider the toughest non-conference schedule at any level in the state. After that death row slate of games, they’ll lead their team into the unforgiving grasps of the 3A-1 conference where everyone will want a piece of the back-to-back Conference champions. Then the Tigers will invade Russia armed only with toothpicks and sporks in the dead of winter….at least that’s the kind of gloom and doom the critics expect with the kind of schedule Mansfield will face. But what many forget is that these seniors are no less than any seniors that came before them. They have the same heart and tenacity as any Tiger to have ever put on the helmet.
No one gave two thoughts about the Mansfield Tigers in 2023, but the Tigers went 11-3. Not a soul gave the Tigers a snowball’s chance in 2024, but again, they went 11-3. Everyone double-dog dared anyone to bet on Mansfield ever winning a State Championship, but in 2025, well, Mansfield went 14-0 and took home the 3A State Championship. So let the doubters prematurely turn out the lights on seniors Dalton Knowles, Nathan Dyer, Caiden Whittaker, Dieuphny Smithson, and Chandler Whisman because they’ll create their own spotlight on the scoreboard.
