Waldron Nursing Center residents had a great time this week with Roger Sparks and all of his blue grass group of singers and fiddle players. It was reported by the residents that they all had a toe tapping time and that the group was extra good. The residents always look forward to the group coming. Other events included Sunday services with Winfield Baptist, movie with Alex, Reminiscence with Billie, Diane is doing much better and the residents are waiting for her return, cooking on Monday of making a cake in the microwave, Volunteer Doyle Wayne came by to see how to make a cake in the microwave so I am thinking he will be having to cook Karen one before too long. The residents really enjoy the cooking activities, each one that attends does a part of mixing up the batter and then frosting their cakes when it is finished. Nail painting on Tuesday and Friday morning, exercise time, Wednesday evening church with Ray Jett, scrap-booking, movie and popcorn, Thursday evening services with Larry Justice, Friday morning crafts, the residents have been making different Thanksgiving crafts with assistance from Billie, Alex and Pat Morales. Bingo on Wednesday and Friday afternoon with our great Volunteers, Doyle Wayne & Karen, Pat Morales, Joanna Strozier all assisting the residents with their cards or calling the numbers. Another great group, Freedom Church singers, was here on Saturday evening to sing. Residents are still admiring the Thanksgiving door art work by Ms. Powells 1 & 2nd period art students. They are planning to return in December to do the doors for Christmas.

Our Special activity of “Be a Pilgrim” was lots of fun as each one chose the Pilgrim bonnet that they were going to wear for the photo pose-up activity. Alex, activity assistant, helped with the bonnet choosing while Billie assisted with getting everyone lined up for their photo. Volunteer Karen and Activity assistant, Billie, helped me make all of the photos while Volunteer Doyle Wayne was in charge of passing out the Tootsie pop treats when everyone was finished with their photo. There is nothing like a bit of chocolate to end any activity event. There are  lots of great Pilgrim photos on the resident photo wall. Waldron Nursing Center also received a lovely Thanksgiving note card from the family of Shirley Ammons in memory of the time she was here with us. We all still miss Shirley and her very loving family who was always here to pitch in with our craft activities and other things.
I am still in great need of stuffed animals for our bingo cart. Also I am collecting 2017 calendars for our resident rooms to be put up the first of January. Shirley Blythe gave me some this week along with a few others who have been saving them for me. If anyone has them please drop them off with my name on them at the Office and they will be given to me.
Employees also received a turkey from the Nursing Center for Thanksgiving. Time is also passing quickly and I will be posting the resident “Joy Tree” list right after Thanksgiving for our resident Christmas Party. Anyone wanting to pick a name and help out just give me a call or stop by the Activity Office.
In closing the Resident Memory Parade and program will be held December 7th at 10:00 am in the resident dining room in memory of all residents who passed away in 2016. Anyone is invited to come.

Tiger Distance Trio Run at River Valley All-Stars

Two girls and one boy off the Mansfield High School cross country team found their way to the River Valley All-Stars for post season competition. The elite 5K run for standout locals gave the Mansfield trio a chance to compete after the state meet.
Mansfield natives Megan Rose, Lennon Woods, and Devon Pyles not only attended the November 19 spectacle but they excelled.
Rose, a member of the Mansfield junior class, was the individual runner-up at the RVAS women’s portion of the cross country meet. Woods, just a freshman, climbed to fourth place in the women’s standings with a personal best 5K time. Then, Pyles crossed in 15th place on the men’s side.
The River Valley All-Stars has become an annual event established just a few short seasons ago by long time Magazine coach Randy Bryan. It was Bryan’s vision and forward thinking to promote the sport of cross country. As such, he developed a qualifying system based upon 5K times throughout the season. By those numbers, 30 of the top female runners and 30 of the top male runners within a generous radius of a multi-county circle were given a chance to compete one more time after the state finals.
“Many of the elite local runners are done after the state finals,” explained John Mackey, the cross country coach at Mansfield. “If you had an individual win state they could move on and compete at the Arkansas-Oklahoma All-Star Meet. Otherwise their season was done. Coach Bryan saw a need for those that didn’t win state but were still high quality performers. That’s how the River Valley All-Stars began.”
Since the specialty event’s inception, Mansfield has had a steady line of runners make the squad over the last few years. Last Saturday’s contest saw three more names added to the list.
Rose, who appeared on the list the previous two seasons, was making her third consecutive appearance. Pyles, a junior like Rose, accepted his second All-Star bid. Woods made the team in her first year of eligibility.
Rose and Woods made the women’s squad by meeting the 23 minute standard. Pyles earned his invitation by hitting the 19 minute barrier.
At the earlier morning a-list contest, it was Rose that shook off an aching muscle in her lower leg to post a new season best of 21:32. Her mark was 10 seconds faster than her October 18 time along the same Rattler course. It was 13 seconds faster than her runner-up finish at the 2016 Regional Finals.
Woods had only run one competitive 5K race before her name appeared on the short list to compete at the All-Stars. Her fourth place finish at the Southwest Regionals put her into position to make the RVAS squad. It wasn’t until after the state finals that she learned her regional score stood within the 30 player limit.
“Lennon was on the fringe of making the squad,” expressed her coach. “We waited until the following Monday after state to learn she was invited. The selection committee made the right decision. She ran her best race all year with a new personal record 22:38.”
Pyles also made the list because of his Southwest Regional mark. That reconfigured Acorn course afforded him a 19:41 clocking to inch onto the All-Star ticket. His best finish at the Hot Springs finals the following week, and a 19:59 mark at the All-Stars gave Pyles a strong finish to his penultimate season.
“I’m proud of all three of our All-Stars,” gleamed Mackey. “They work really hard at a sport many people don’t get to see. They have done Mansfield proud as did all our runners this season. It was a satisfying end to a productive season.”

Dry Conditions Causing Problems for Local Fire Departments

Local volunteer fire departments are currently facing harsh conditions in the area due to less than average rainfall this Fall. Sebastian County was placed under a burn ban on 11-15-2016.

Units responded to a grass fire in the 8000 block of Amity Lane on Friday November 11, 2016 prior to the burn ban as well as a structure fire on Highway 45 on Monday morning.

Hackett, EMP, and White Bluff Fire Departments also responded to a grass fire on Bethel Road today (11-16-2016). The dry conditions make it very easy for fires to get out of control very quickly.

Burning under a county issued burn ban could result in a citation.
