Tigers Embrace Tradition

You couldn’t help but notice a sense of something old, and something new if you traveled around Mansfield last week.
From window paintings at Cornerstone Pharmacy, to decorated cars, and the anticipation from the community was as thick as it had ever been, from years ago. Tradition was is plain sight, and that’s exactly what needs to happen for any program to be rebuilt, and stand strong.

Lady Tigers Fall to Paris Eagles

Coming off a strong win against the Charleston Lady Tigers on their home court, the Mansfield Lady Tigers couldn’t muster enough points to stay ahead when facing the Paris Lady Eagles Tuesday afternoon.
Paris beat the Tigers in straight sets with score of 25-5, 25-8, and 25-11.
Stats:
Kills: Weaver and Davis 2
Blocks: Brewer and shoell 1, Davis had 2 assisted blocks and 1 solo block
Digs: Weaver 5, Bolton 3
Head Coach Savanna Colbert stated, “This was our best blocking game we’ve had, and we were facing some of the best hitters in our conference. It was pretty exciting to see the potential that our blocks have. Our timing has gotten so much better at the net and were continuing to grow on that. We get a little bit better at different skills in every game we play and I’m so ready for it all to come together. It’s a really good feeling watching these players grow and I’m anxious for the future ahead of them.”
The Lady Tigers next game is against the Lady Hornets, at Hackett this Thursday. Games start at 4:00pm.

MMS Students Release Balloons for Christian

This morning at 8:00am, students from Mansfield Middle School joined faculty members Kandis Howard, Malinda Wesley, and Principal Floyd Fisher on the football field, holding assorted colors of balloons in preparation of releasing them in memory of their friend, and classmate, Christian Bowlin who suddenly passed away over Summer vacation.

“Christian Bowlin was a 5th grade student that abruptly passed away over Summer vacation.  Christian was an avid Boy Scout and loved discussing various topics with his teachers” said MMS Principal, Floyd Fisher. “Christian was one of those students that always had a smile and made everyone’s day a little brighter.  Several of Christian’s classmates were not aware of his passing until the school year began”

MMS Students (Left to Right). Drew Elmore, Fisher Willsey, Tyler Woolbright, John Broadway, and Kanzden Seajack were the group of young men that supported the tribute with the idea.

Kanzden Seajack approached Mr. Fisher during the first week of school, and wanted a way to honor Christian and remember the impact he made of his fellow peers lives.  Kanzden assembled a team of friends that would help him with the tribute.  The students spent several weeks working toward a way to honor Christian and his memory.
The students wanted to do something fun to remember Christian, but also something to memorialize him as well.  The students decided on a balloon release for Christian and September 7th seemed to work for Christian’s parents.  Students used cups to display Christian’s name in the fence for students to see the entire school year

As the balloons were released into the bright blue morning sky, you couldn’t help but see the beauty, and realize the impact Christian made on his classmates, teachers, friends, and his community.

At approximately 7:00 am this morning, John Broadway arrived the earliest to start airing up approximately 100 balloons.  Kanzden shortly joined with his mother and brother to help complete the balloon process.  Drew, Fisher, and Tyler arrived prior to school to help pass out balloons to their classmates.
Students decided to lead a quiet march to the football and say a few words to honor Christian.  Kanzden spoke briefly before the young men released eleven yellow balloons that represented Christian’s age, six red balloons to honor their 6th grade classmate, and the approximately 80 more balloons of various colors.  The balloons were primarily composed of yellow, blue, and green to represent colors associated with Boy Scouts.
Christian’s family was in attendance and the students held a moment of silence to honor their late friend.

Bulldogs Bite the Tigers

Heading into the Tigers season opener last Friday, MHS Students, faculty, and the citizens of the Mansfield area were anxiously the start of the “Battle of Scott County” at Tiger stadium.
Moments before kickoff of the annual contest, the line to enter Tiger Stadium was as long as the football field itself. With expectations high for the start of the 2016 high school football season, an estimated 2,000 fans overwhelmed seating capacity to catch the first game of the new year.
Both Mansfield, and Waldron brought large numbers of fans to fill both sides of bleachers, and emotions were running high as both teams entered the field. Going into the game, Mansfield was favored as they have won the contest for the past 10 years.
“We thought there would be a huge crowd for this annual Scott County Battle,” stated women’s athletic director John Mackey. “There were three gate keepers scheduled to accommodate the masses. Unfortunately, unexpected circumstances kept one of those from attending. The entrance line got a lot longer than we wanted. But, the two gatekeepers we did have did a fantastic job of moving people through as fast as they could.”
According to administrative records, over 1,500 paid tickets were distributed on game night. Another several hundred people were let into the stadium with advance passes. That brought the total attendance to one of the highest counts in recent Mansfield football history.
To date Mansfield had won 10 consecutive football contests between the two schools. With the exception of a hiccup in 2005, the Tigers had dominated their southern rival since 2003.
This year it was all Waldron. Building momentum started early in the game, and was captained by a veteran lineup, Waldron took the nod 45-0 over an inexperienced Tiger team.
Coach Bentley stated, “Obviously not the result we wanted. I was very proud of our coaches and players and how we handled ourselves through adversity. Six weeks ago, this team didn’t have a Head Coach, and we have 11 kids (some starters) who were not on the team as of July 11th. We have been through a complete program overhaul and schematic changes in a short amount of time. We are not going to panic and abandon ship, we are going to keep a steady course, put the hard hat on, and get back to work.”
The Mansfield Tigers travel to Greenland this Friday. Game time is 7:00pm.
