MSD Students “SHINE” Through Artwork

By Kandis Howard, RP Contributor

The City of Mansfield recently created several new committees to help promote some positive changes around town. One of the committees formed was the Mansfield Shine Committee. Its main goals are to promote cleanliness and beautification of the city.
At the end of 2015, the committee partnered together with the Mansfield School District in an effort to get the word out to the public in the form of an art competition. The art teachers, Kelli Thomas and David Love, worked with their students from kindergarten to 12th grade to make posters with the theme “Help Mansfield Shine.”
One overall winner was chosen to be the cover for a calendar and will soon have her poster displayed in the heart of the city near the Mansfield sign on the gazebo square.
The overall winner was Whitney Clark (11th). Four winners were chosen from each campus to have their posters included in the calendar for 2016. They include Colton Silvey (7th), Gavin Holland (6th), Megan Plymale (10th), Trinity Triska (3rd), Jessica George (8th), Mylee Strozier (2nd), Haylie Reese (11th), Scotland Brennan (11th), Haden Henson (7th), Dalton Smedley (12th), Chloe Hattabaugh (1st), and Carter Whiley (3rd). You may buy one of these nice calendars from either art teacher, the City Hall, or at several of the local banks and businesses. The cost is $5 with half of the proceeds going back to the Mansfield Art Dept.

2015 Flood 2.0

It would be hard not to see or understand how much rain we received this past weekend. Some reports have stated that any where between 8″ – 12″ of rain fell in our area. This past May, we also received torrential amounts of rain, that were quick to flood creeks, rivers, and most anything that held water. See that story HERE.
This past weekend, we noticed that it wasn’t only how much rain fell, but how quickly. Creeks began making their way into massive rivers that tore into anything that was standing, or impeded its progress. Roads were impassible, and were closed to the flooding, making it hard to get any where, safely.
We want to say a special THANK YOU to all the Law Enforcement, Search & Rescue, Fire Departments, and Emergency Units that took time away from their Holiday festivities to make sure everyone stayed safe.

Mansfield Soccer goes UNDEFEATED, again.

Mansfield Soccer coach Jason Baggett had no idea when he, along with his wife Lesli, and Shawn, and Amy SIlvey started the youth soccer program in Mansfield in Fall of 2009, that they would ever go undefeated. Let alone twice, in 5 years.
“I’m proud for the kids, and what they’ve been able to accomplish as a team through the many obstacles we’ve faced each year, and each game. They have a special place in my heart, and are beyond awesome” said Jason Baggett.
Their season consisted of 13 games, with only one coming to a tie breaker for decision, to end the season.
Baggett stated, “The last game, was they ONE game our kids wanted badly. Emotions ran high and the team rallied to come from behind to tie the game in the final minutes of the game, which led to the tie-breaker that our kids owned from the start. It’s amazing to win at any level, but this level is super competitive, which brings some strong emotions from both the parents, and the players. We begin, and end each game in prayer, thankful for the opportunity to play a sport we all love.”
The soccer program has grown every year since starting in Fall 2009 with teams from US (4-5 year olds), and up to U14 (12-13 year olds). Mansfield plays scheduled games against Booneville, Paris, and Ozark.
An additional fact to Baggetts team is that most of his team “Kickin’ It” has grown up with him as their coach, including his son Greyson, a starting mid-fielder. Most of the team had never played soccer until 2009, and have played together ever since.
Greyson Baggett, and Chandlan Silvey are given full credit for the creation of this league, under the supervision of their parents / coaches. They had originally played together in Greenwood Soccer League, but wanted to play in Mansfield, and for Mansfield. Together, they have gained notoriety as the true “founders” of Mansfield Soccer League.

Congratulations Mansfield Soccer aka “Kickin’ It”!!!!
