Bismarck Defeats Paris 41-0

PARIS- It was homecoming on the campus of Paris High School. And after all of the day’s homecoming activities and pregame ceremonies, the Eagles hosted the Bismarck Lions in a 3A-4 conference game.

Paris went into the game having lost at Bismarck a year ago by the score of 55-0. Bismarck, last year’s conference runners-up with their only conference loss of the season to the undefeated conference champions, Glen Rose, returned several players this year. Paris entered the game with a young roster and wanting to compete with the Lions on their own field.

And for much of the first half, that is exactly what the Eagles did. After a scoreless first quarter by both teams, Bismarck eventually scored in the second quarter and took a 7-0 lead into the mid-point of the quarter. But Paris was unable to capitalize off of a fumbled punt that gave the Eagles first and goal inside the Bismark ten-yard line. The Lions would eventually score two more times, and with approximately 30 seconds remaining in the first half, the Lions had extended their lead to 21-0.

Paris was unable to muster much offense all night, and a courageous defensive effort by the Eagles began to fall apart in the second half. Senior quarterback Maddox Watts left the game in the second quarter, and his status is unknown as of tonight.

The final score was a little misleading; Bismarck scored late in the second half to extend their lead to the final score of 41-0. Paris played a very competitive first half against the Lions, especially on defense.

With the win, Bismarck improves their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Lions return home next Friday to host Glen Rose in what likely will be for the conference championship. Bismarck’s only loss of the season was a 56-20 loss to Prescott on August 25.

Paris will be on the road next Friday to play a very important conference game at Jessieville. The Jessieville Lions lost a week ago at home to Bismarck by the score of 46-6. The Eagles could take a big step toward qualifying for the playoffs with a win at Jessieville. With the loss, Paris’s overall record drops to 2-3 and 0-2 in conference. The Eagles have now played the top two teams in the conference and have a much more favorable schedule remaining.

RNN Sports will be in Jessieville next week for the Eagles’ game on Friday. We will also be in Paris on Thursday night, October 5, to cover the Eagles’ junior high game with Jessieville at Eagles Stadium.

Watch for photos from tonight’s game on Facebook at Paris Eagles Sports. Have a good weekend, and we will see you at the stadium again next week!

Hello everyone! Beautiful weather here in the River Valley.

I’ve told y’all a lot of the crazy stuff I’ve done in my life, and there has been plenty for sure. Remember when I told y’all about the time I wore my shirt wrong side out to Walmart, and the man was staring? Well, I went to Poteau to the Balls Outlet store, which I love, and tried on some tops and low and behold, when I put my shirt back on, it was wrong side out and I didn’t know it till I got home. This particular shirt had a big white tag on it. So again, I wear my shirt wrong side out. That explains why this one lady kept staring at me. Lands sake, why don’t I pay attention?

Jacob likes to tell me about all the crazy stuff I’ve done, but let me tell ya, he has done some crazy stuff also. For instance, the time he was telling me when they were at Universal Studios and he says, “there were a lot of Philippians there.” I said “Philippians?” Like in the Book in the Bible? What he meant to say was Filipinos, like my great Uncle Seri Clemente. He was the kindest, nicest man and my Great Aunt was something else. I think I might be a lot like her. Jacob can’t say anything about his momma. We have all said the wrong thing or got a word or two wrong.

One time there was a nice Christian lady, I won’t name her name, y’all would know her. She’s kin to the Weavers. She was giving a little sermon at a church in Greenwood one time and in her sermon, she was talking about how we need to love and nurture new Christians. Well, instead of saying love and nurture, she said “love and neuter” them. Now that’s hilarious. I hope nobody took her to heart when she said that. Oh, the funny things that happen at church!

This week’s recipe is another fall dessert. It’s a no bake pumpkin pie.
1 cup canned pumpkin
1 3/4 oz box of vanilla instant pudding
1/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 oz. Cool Whip
1 9″ graham cracker pie crust
Mix the pudding and the milk. Add the pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice, mix well. Stir in the Cool Whip, pour in the graham cracker crust and keep in the refrigerator. Have a blessed week and remember when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.

When Should You Sell Investments?

If you’re a long-term investor, your portfolio may stay fairly stable over time. However, that doesn’t mean you will never sell any investments. But when should you sell — and why?

Here are some scenarios to consider:

• If an investment has consistently underperformed – For one reason or another, some investments may not live up to your expectations. Rather than holding these investments in the hope that they will eventually show consistently positive returns, you might be better off selling them and using the proceeds to buy other investments that could help you make progress toward your goals. Keep in mind, though, that short-term price swings are inevitable for virtually all investments, so you may not want to sell an investment after just a few price drops, as it may still have strong fundamentals and good prospects.

• If the investment itself has changed – The nature of some investments, such as stocks, can change over time. Stocks represent companies, and companies can evolve and adapt — or not. So, you may own shares in a company whose management has changed or whose products are less competitive than they once were. If this company no longer seems like a sound investment, you may consider selling your shares and moving on.

• If an investment is “redundant” – Over time, you may have added investments that are similar to others you already own. If you do have too many investments that are alike, you risk not having a fully diversified portfolio, and while diversification can’t always protect against all losses or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. Consequently, you might want to sell an investment that may now be “redundant” to your portfolio and replace it with another one that could boost your diversification efforts.

• If an investment takes up too much space in your portfolio – If you bought an investment years ago, and it’s grown substantially in value, it could eventually take up more space in your portfolio than you had intended, which could expose you to more risk than you’d like — because too much of any single investment may leave you more vulnerable to market downturns. Of course, if the investment is still appropriate for your needs, and still has a good outlook, you may not want to totally liquidate it, but you could consider scaling back on the shares you own.

• If your own needs have changed – You originally created your investment mix to help you reach certain goals, such as a comfortable retirement. And during much of your working life, you could possibly afford to invest primarily for growth, accepting the risk that comes along with that approach, as you knew you’d have time to potentially overcome the short-term volatility that’s part of investing. But as you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level. Consequently, you could decide to sell some of your growth-oriented investments and move the money into income-producing ones. However, even during retirement, you’ll still need your portfolio to provide some growth opportunities to help you ahead of inflation.

Generally speaking, you may not want to do a lot of selling (or buying) of investments once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. But if you are going to sell investments, make sure you do so for the right reasons.

The Wild 6A West

Things have gone topsy turvy in the first 3 weeks of conference play.

Greenbrier undefeated in conference and putting up 40 points per game…. Pulaski Academy got the Sportsmanship Rule enacted on them… Mountain Home has the top QB in the conference… wait wait wait. Oh, there it is, Greenwood and Little Rock Christian are at the top, everything is where it should be.

This has been a very interesting year for High School Football in Arkansas. Mountain Home came out firing and has one of the top offenses in the 6A, granted they did not gain much against Greenwood’s defense, but they did take Lake Hamilton and Russellville to the wire. Things are moving along nicely for the Bombers. This week the Bombers welcome Little Rock Christian to North Central Arkansas and their Auburn commit QB Walker White. Which is a perfect segue into, Little Rock Christian did something that has not happened in quite some time. Mercy ruled Pulaski Academy last week in a 55-13 win. It for sure overshadows the 43-22 loss they experienced at the hands of 5A West competitor Shiloh Christian. The Warriors sit at 4-1 going into tonight’s matchup against Mountain Home.

Speaking of Pulaski Academy, they are still the Bruins that we know. One bad night will for sure grab the headlines but let’s look at what has affected them. The would be returning Senior duo Kel Busby and Kenny Jordan did not happen. Kel Busby was injured in the spring and Kenny Jordan moved to Tennessee. For what it is worth, I believed Kenny Jordan was a very underrated running back in the 6A last year. He was going up against Arkansas Commit Braylen Russell out of Benton and the talented upstart Ronny Anokye from Little Rock Christian. Back to Pulaski, Quarterback Brandon Cobb has done a masterful job stepping up in that roll passing for 964 yards and 9 TD’s. I feel this is a blip on the PA record and it will come down to the last two weeks when Greenwood has to face Pulaski Academy and Little Rock Christian in consecutive games.

Greenwood, the defense is as advertised at the beginning of the season, and they have been taking care of business every week since the season started. Sure, there have been some injuries, but it is interesting to look at the stats for the Quarterbacks and if they combined all the stats Greenwood would have the top QB in yardage. Let’s not let that stuff overshadow what Brayedan Davis has done in the backfield for the Bulldogs. 83 carries for 664 yards and 13 Touchdowns, 8 of which came in the last two weeks. Defensively between the 11 interceptions and the QB sacks opposing teams have found it tough to gain yards. Greenwood has 17 sacks on the season with 11 of those coming from Junior Cash Archer.

Greenwood’s opponent this week Greenbrier is sitting at 3-1 overall averaging 44 points a game. For a team that went 2-8 last year and was picked 5th in conference by Hooten’s things are on the upswing for the Panthers. Statistically they are looking extremely well with 1157 yards through the air and 742 yards on the ground. Sophomore Running Back Enoch Assan is the rushing leader with 276 yards on the season. After Greenwood, the Panthers face Lake Hamilton, Russellville, Pulaski Academy, Little Rock Christian, and then Mountain Home. If they drop Greenwood and the two Private School teams, then win the others they could very well be sitting in the 4th seed spot for the playoffs after finishing 8th last year.

Lake Hamilton has had some close games this season and are 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference heading into this week against Van Buren. After going 8-2 in the regular season in 2022 and predicted to finish 4th in the 6A West, the Wolves are looking at continuing to show they are force to be reckoned with. Games against Greenbrier, Greenwood, and Pulaski Academy loom on the horizon and could surprise any three of those teams. Van Buren came out hot against Alma putting up 51 points in the Battle of the Bone, ever since? Well, it’s the other teams putting up 50 points. Senior QB Bryce Perkins has thrown for 950 yards on 151 attempts with 86 completions and 10 Touchdowns. If Van Buren is to have a shot at post season play it has to start this Friday with a win.

Rounding out the conference is Siloam Springs and Russellville. after watching Siloam Springs play at Greenwood on Sept 15th, they showed they could run the ball efficiently. It looks like the ball has not bounced their way this season. This Friday they face Russellville at Russellville. Last year Russellville lost three straight then went on a four-game win streak, had Greenwood’s number for a half before Greenwood pulled away. This year the Cyclones have dropped four in a row. They had Pulaski down for a bit as well. Could they win the next three and give Greenwood heck again, I guess we will see.

RNN Sports Stone Cold Lock Of The Week: Week 5

Does it get any better than Friday Nights in the Fall

Adam and I went 100% correct last week. I missed on the game of the week though, I should have picked that Rogers vs FS Southside, that one went down to the wire. So what do we have this week… a lot of teams are about to get into the meat and potatoes of their conference schedule. Mansfield vs Everybody looms on the horizon, several media outlets have the Tigers just outside their Class 3A top 10 waiting to see how the next three weeks shake out for them. If they get past Charleston next week, the October 13th matchup between Booneville and Mansfield will be huge.

RNN Sports Stone Cold Lock Of The Week

Greenbrier @ Greenwood

In all my days of being around High School football, I never thought Greenbrier visiting Greenwood would be the Lock of the Week. But…. here we are. I will dive deeper into the chaos that is now the 6A West or just 6A in general in another article, but gosh golly is this a weird season already. Unless you’ve been living off the grid or just not caring what Greenwood is doing they have been amassing points at a crazy pace. As Randy Rainwater pointed out on the Ortho-Arkansas Post Game show Friday night, “2nd string or 3rd string QB doesn’t matter Greenwood gets it done.” Out scoring their opponents 54-12 in enroute to a 5-0 record. Greenbrier has been putting in work as well out scoring their opponents 44-23. The Panthers sit at 2-0 in conference and got to enjoy a bye week last Friday. Greenbrier’s lone loss on the 3-1 season is to Farmington who has since been bitten by the injury bug. The Panthers are much better than they were last year when they were toe to toe with Greenwood 28-21 at Halftime.

The Rest

Mansfield @ Greenland

Mansfield is absolutely rolling right now with an explosive offense and a very tough defense. Greenland fell into a Tiger trap last week and was rolled 51-9 by Charleston. This set of Tigers will do the same if not worse Friday night. Mansfield has not let a team get to 10 points in any of its 4 games, and that does not look to change this week.

Charleston @ Cedarville

The Charleston ship looks to be righted as they head into this weeks matchup against the Pirates. Cedarville is struggling to put points on the board this season and will not get any easier with the visiting Tigers. Charleston’s schedule heats up just on the other side of this week and they will start with a home game against Mansfield.

Booneville @ West Fork

Booneville handled Hackett last week to get conference win number 1 of the 2023 season. West Fork is searching for that first conference win, just like the Razorbacks the West Fork Tigers are on the toughest part of their schedule. Mansfield last week, Booneville this week, then a trip to Lavaca. Gosh golly that is a tough conference schedule. the Bearcats make the trip up I49 and set the cruise control in this one.

Lavaca @ Hackett

I picked Lavaca, Adam picked Hackett. Truth be told….. I still think Lavaca is a dangerous sleeper in the 3A Region 1. Just have to wait for the last three games to see just how dangerous they can be. Hackett is sitting at 2-2 and coming off a 46-14 loss to Boonville. If their current win loss pattern holds true they could be celebrating Friday night. But, I think the Golden Arrows are on target and take down the Hornets.

Magazine @ JC Westside

The Rattlers have a good shot at snake biting the Rebels and coming away with the win this week. This could be just what Magazine needs as they head down the stretch of the 2A Region 1 conference.

Bismarck @ Paris

The Paris defense will have their work cut out for them as they host the Bismarck Lions. Since a week 0 loss to Prescott, the Lions have been mauling everyone in their path averaging 45 points per game while only giving up 9 points. For Paris this may seem like deja vu from last weeks game against Glen Rose.

Green Forest @ Ozark

Ozark has a tough three game stretch coming up against Lincoln, Gentry, and Elkins. But first the 2-2 Green Forest Tigers. The Tigers dropped a tough loss last week against Lincoln 30-29. Ozark dropped 50 points on Berryville last week and the only blemish on the Hillbilly record is Booneville in week 1. Ozark pulls past Green Forest in this one and gets right back to work to prepare for the next three weeks.

Waldron @ Malvern

Malvern… well they are really good this year and only have taken losses from a team in Texas and another in Mississippi. Hoping Waldron finishes the season strong and ready to build on what they have started.

The Others

Fort Smith Southside @ Bentonville

Ok ok I see you Southside. Took a talented Rogers Mounties team to the wire and dropped a heartbreaker. I want to see the Mavericks have a great showing against Bentonville. Although after I saw that Bentonville put up 73 points against Springdale Har-Ber….. whew. I think the Tigers get the better of the Mavericks in this one.

Little Rock Central @ Fort Smith Northside

Two historic teams in the State of Arkansas. 40 State Championships, numerous NFL stars, two historic stadiums, and two identical 2023 records. One of these two are going to win their first game of 2023. Northside is on a 4 game skid that I cannot remember seeing from the school, they need this win. This could be a fun game to watch.

Jr. High Bulldogs Sweep Northridge

On Tuesday night the 7th Grade and 8th Grade Bulldogs beat Van Buren Northridge

In the opener on Tuesday night the 7th Grade Bulldogs wanted to show the Van Buren Northridge Pointers they could replicate what the Varsity team could do. The Bulldogs won 32-14 improving their record to 5-0 on the season.

Then it was 8th Grades turn.

Van Buren would strike first taking up most of the 1st quarter to go ahead 7-0 with 1:56 in the 1st. The Bulldogs would stall out on their first drive turning the ball over on downs deep in Van Buren territory. The Pointers ran out the rest of the 1st quarter clock.

Van Buren would not be able to capitalize and are forced to punt. The Bulldogs march down and Jubal Parks takes it in for the touchdown. A penalty on the field goal brought the Bulldogs closer and they opted for the 2-point conversion and get it. 8-7 with 5:04 left in the half. Both teams would stall out and trade the ball, Van Buren punted three times, while Greenwood fumbled and was intercepted. Halftime score sitting at 8-7

Opening the 2nd half the Bulldogs took to the ground and Gunnar Flannery gets it in for the Touchdown. Field Goal was good with 4:32 left in the third. Van Buren was facing 4th down when a high snap on the punt had the Bulldogs starting from the Pointer 18 yard line. Drake Little would find an open hole and punch it in, the point after was good, Bulldogs on top 22-7 with :56 left in the third. The Pointers would not go quiet into the night, a catch over the middle was taken in for the touch down, 2 point conversion would fail making it 22-13 with :16 left in the third.

Greenwood ran out the clock and started marching towards the end zone in the 4th quarter. Dabin Gaines’ pass to a leaping Braxton Canada was good for the touchdown, point after was good. 29-13 with 5:25 in the 4th. That is where the score remained as time ran out.

“That was one of our toughest opponents last year in this grade was the Northridge part of Van Buren.” Head Junior High Coach Luke Hales said after the victory, “We were excited about it, we knew it was going to be a big one and it was.”

“Defense did awesome, this group is fun. They play hard, they play fast, they play physical.” said Coach Hales.

With the win 8th Grade moves to 5-0 on the season.

Looking at all the Bulldog Football teams:

Varsity: 5-0 – The Bulldogs host Greenbrier on Friday

JV: 1-0 – JV is off until October 9th

9th: 3-1 – 9th Grade plays Sallisaw at Sallisaw on Thursday Sept. 26th then at Harrison Oct. 5th

Eagles Host Bismarck for Homecoming Game

PARIS- Paris will host the Bismarck Lions this Friday in a 3A-4 conference game at Eagles Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

It’s homecoming week for Paris, and the pregame homecoming coronation ceremony will take place on the field at approximately 6:30 p.m. And for the Eagles, Bismarck is an unusually tough opponent for homecoming.

Last season, the Eagles traveled to south Arkansas to play the Lions for the first time as members of the new 3A-4. Bismarck, runners-up to Glen Rose in the conference a year ago, handed Paris an ugly 55-0 loss. The game became “chippy” between both teams, and fans are wondering if any of the bad blood from last year’s game will carry forward to this week’s homecoming showdown.

Paris’s struggles a year ago are well-documented. Additionally, by the time the Eagles met Bismarck at this point of the season in 2022, injuries were starting to mount, and the Eagles had not yet won a football game. So, tempers were short, and frustrations were high.

Turning ahead to this week’s return game in Paris, the Eagles are a young and talented team. Some of those players experienced the nightmare at Bismarck a year ago, and do not want to experience it again on Friday.

At deadline time for this story, Paris was getting ready to travel to Glen Rose to play last year’s conference champion. It is a very tough two week stretch for Paris who will play the top two teams in the conference back-to-back on their schedule. And when those two weeks have been played, the Eagles will again take to the road for another very difficult game at Jessieville.

The Lions football program has been on an upward trend over the past two seasons and look to continue that trend this season. Bismarck won 13 games and two playoff games from 2021-22. They are again picked to finish second in the conference to Glen Rose.

Lions wide receiver Dalton Daniels finished second in the conference a year ago with 602 receiving yards on 42 receptions. He also caught 11 touchdown passes in 2022.

Defensively, the Lions are extremely tough. Conference leaders in tackles, Gavin Urban and Johnny Diaz are a force for the Lions. Urban led the conference in 2022 with 80 tackles, and Diaz was second with 57.5 tackles.

But the Lions, in the words of Hooten’s Arkansas Football publication, have “an untested offensive line and linebackers” as a potential weakness going into this season. Last year’s backup quarterback, Ben Keithley, will start this year for Bismarck. To be successful on Friday, Paris’s defensive line and linebackers must win the battle with the inexperienced Bismarck offensive line.

As of the deadline for this story, Bismarck had started the season 2-1 with wins over Rison and Poyen and a loss at home vs. Prescott. Bismarck was about to host Jessieville on September 22 prior to this week’s game at Paris.

After their game with Paris on October 29, the Lions will return home to host a game with Glen Rose that could determine the conference championship. It will be necessary for Bismarck not to look past Paris this week with Glen Rose coming to Bismarck the following week.

Watch for our postgame story this weekend on our website at residentnewsnetwork.com. Action photos from this game will be available on Facebook at Paris Eagles Sports next week.

So, happy homecoming to the Paris community, and we look forward to seeing you at the stadium on Friday!

Charleston Returns to the Road to Take On Cedarville in 3A-1 Conference Play

CEDARVILLE- It was a busy summer in 2023 with several head football coaching changes in the 3A-1 conference. One of those changes was in Cedarville where new head football coach, Spencer Adams, succeeded Max Washausen. Washausen accepted an offer to become the offensive coordinator at Prairie Grove this summer. Adams, according to what you may read on social media, was preparing to get married when he received a call from the Cedarville administration at his rehearsal dinner, offering him the job.

And that epitomizes the changes that have taken place with the Cedarville football program. After a 2-8 season in 2022, the Pirates, who had enjoyed success for the previous few years, have found themselves in rebuilding mode. Under Spencer Adams, fans can expect the Pirates to throw the ball a little more than they have over the past four to five years. But the transition to the passing game will take time for Adams and his staff to develop players. So, change has come to Cedarville, and the proud Pirates football program finds itself in a state of transition.

Versatile senior fullback / quarterback, Colton Arnold, worked out at both positions in the spring. Arnold was second in rushing in the conference a year ago to All-State Booneville running back Dax Goff. Arnold rushed for 797 yards on 142 carries and scored seven touchdowns. Very good stats on a team that struggled all season.

On defense, senior Braxton Bentley will anchor the offensive and defensive lines for the Pirates. Bentley recorded 22 tackles and a sack last season.

At deadline time for this story, the Pirates were 0-3 on the current season. Cedarville has losses to Perryville (41-0), Mountainburg (17-8), and Green Forest (24-6). At publication time, Cedarville was preparing to make the trip to Lavaca to play the Golden Arrows.

Cedarville is both low in overall numbers on their roster and lack depth. The Pirates are also low in returning offensive linemen after being one of the best rushing offenses a few years ago. Charleston, as well as other opponents, will attempt to run the football against the Pirates, wearing down a defense that is low in depth and returning players.

At press time for this story, the Charleston Tigers were finalizing their preparations for their home conference game with Greenland on September 22. The Tigers’ game this week with Cedarville is important to Charleston; they cannot afford to overlook the Pirates with Mansfield coming to Alumni Field the following week. Cedarville has traditionally been a tough place for opposing teams to play, and the Pirates will come out ready to play against Charleston.

Following their game this week with Charleston, Cedarville will host the Hackett Hornets on October 6.

Kickoff in Cedarville is set for 7 p.m. Watch for our postgame story on this game this weekend on the RNN Sports website at residentnewsnetwork.com.

And like every week, we will see you at the stadium on Friday night!
