Steer Clear of Unsafe Spirits this Holiday Season; Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

One person died every 52 minutes as the result of drunk driving crashes on U.S. streets and highways during 2019.  Even during the joyous Christmas season, the deadly statistics continue to mount.

This holiday season, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is partnering with Arkansas law enforcement agencies to spread the message about the dangers of drunk driving.

Arkansas law enforcement officers want all drivers to remember this lifesaving message, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”.

Beginning this week and continuing through January 1, 2022, law enforcement officers across Arkansas will step-up their mission to protect motorists by taking drunk drivers off the roads.  Drivers who are impaired in violation of state law will be stopped and taken to jail.

Arkansas State Troopers, sheriff’s deputies and city police officers will be working with NHTSA to remind drivers that drunk driving is not only illegal, but also a matter of life and death.  Before getting into their vehicles, drivers who have been drinking should remember to ask themselves whether it’s worth the risk of arrest or worse, causing injury or death to someone traveling home for the holidays.

“Just one death on the highway leads to unimaginable consequences that leave families devastated for the remainder of their lives,” said Colonel Bill Bryant, Director of the Arkansas State Police and the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative.  “A death caused by a drunk driver is preventable and that’s why we try every day to remove impaired drivers from the roads before it’s too late.”

In every state it is illegal to drive with a BAC of .08 [*Utah threshold is .05 g/dL].  A driver pulled-over and arrested for DWI faces the possibility of being jailed, revocation of their driver’s license, insurmountable attorney’s fees, higher insurance rates, lost wages and additional criminal charges resulting from a crash that injures or leads to the death of another person.

“We need the support of all Arkansans and ask they be vigilant in reporting suspected impaired driving they see on the highways,” said Colonel Bryant.  “The holidays are a special time of year for most people and we ask everyone to drive sober and responsibly.”

If holiday celebrations call for traveling whether across town or cross state, the Arkansas State Police recommends these safe alternatives to drinking and driving:

•  It’s never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation to get to your destination safely. Plan a safe way home before you leave.

•   If you’ve been drinking, call a taxi or someone who is sober to drive you home.

•   If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 9-1-1.

•   If you know someone who is about to drive or operate a motorcycle or any other vehicle while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to their destination safely.

•   Buckle up, always. Your seat belt is your best defense against the drunk driver.

Waldron Takes Conference Opener Against Paris

After 24 days of not having a home game, the Dogs were back in the WAC to face conference opponent, the Paris Eagles. Coming off of a loss earlier in the week to a good Dardanelle team, the Bulldogs were determined to begin conference play on the right note. Waldron fans packed the WAC like always and got rowdy for their Bulldogs on a Friday night.

The Dogs had been accustomed to starting games slow, but tonight was far from that. Paris started the game in a 1-3-1 zone defense and Trenton Hunt was quickly able to sneak behind the defense and get a layup to fall. The Dogs were playing ferocious defense and not allowing the Eagles any open opportunities. Then Waldron began lighting it up from three-point land as “Fish McConnell” buried back-to-back threes and Hunt added one as well. Paris was forced to call a timeout and re-think things as they were already down 11-0. The Eagles responded though as they begin the apply full-court pressure against the Dogs. This slowed Waldron down and allowed the Eagles to get within 5, but as the clock was winding down in the 1st quarter, Hunt made another 3-pointer to bring the score to 16-8 Waldron advantage.

To begin the 2nd quarter the Dogs came out in a full-court press defense of their own. Both teams were forcing turnovers and getting into foul trouble. McConnell was still hot from three as he got another one to fall to push the Dogs lead to 19-10. The Eagles got in bonus early and were able to get to the free-throw line creating some easy points. Both teams were pretty stagnant on offense, but after Ethan Mayberry got an and-one layup to fall it sparked the Dogs offense before the half. Camdon Holcomb added two layups and McConnell made a putback layup to increase the Dogs lead to 28-19 headed into halftime.

McConnell opened up the scoring in the 2nd half with another 3-pointer which led Coach Atchley to resume their full-court pressure. Paris as well was applying the pressure and forcing lots of turnovers for the Dogs. The Dogs were having trouble breaking the Eagle’s press and allowed the Eagles to get within 3. Then Waldron went on an 8-2 run at the end of the 3rd quarter which consisted of 3-pointers by Lidge Stinson and Hunt, and a steal by Chris Lopez which led to a Stinson layup to make the score 39-31 to end the 3rd quarter.

The Eagle’s constant pressure all night finally got to them in the 4th as they began to foul and send the Dogs to the free-throw line. The Dogs made 8 Free throw attempts in the 4th quarter, but they could not get rid of the Eagles. They matched every shot made by the Dogs and stayed within 4 or 5 most of the 4th. The exhausted Eagles began to be careless with the ball and let the Dogs score quick buckets in transition to balloon out their lead. Lopez got a transition layup and McConnell got two which allowed the Dogs to end up on top with a final score of 55-45 to improve their record to 9-4 and 1-0 in conference.

“Fish” McConnell led the Dogs in scoring with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Hunt added 12 points and Stinson ended the night with 10.

The Dogs will travel to Danville on December 14th to face the Little Johns. Junior girls will begin action at 5:00 followed by Senior girls and Senior boys.

AGFC hosting Big Squirrel Challenge in January

Randy Zellers Assistant Chief of Communications

SPRINGDALE — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is launching a new event this January celebrating small game hunting, and it’s hopeful that it will become an annual celebration. The inaugural Big Squirrel Challenge will take place at locations across Arkansas Jan. 7-8, 2022.

Participants can start hunting at noon, Jan. 7 through 30 minutes after sunset, then hunt again 30 minutes before sunrise until around noon Jan. 8. The biggest three squirrels from each team will be weighed (field-dressed with skin on) at one of the following locations by 2 p.m.:

  • J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center, Springdale
  • Gov. Mike Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center, Pine Bluff
  • Forrest L. Wood Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center, Jonesboro
  • Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, Fort Smith
  • Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center, Yellville
  • Rick Evans Grandview Prairie nature Center, Columbus
  • Camp Robinson Shooting Range, Mayflower
  • Mike Freeze Wattensaw Wildlife Management Area Headquarters

Prizes and trophies will be awarded in three divisions: Youth (two hunters under 16 with an adult mentor or an adult and single hunter under 16), Adult (two hunters 16 or older with no dogs), and Open Class (Two adults or youth hunters in any combination with dogs). In addition to medals, the overall winners in each division will receive Gamo Air Rifles. Drawings also will be held for all participants who turn in a squirrel after the event.

With all of the focus on deer, ducks and turkey in the modern hunting world, relatively few hunters take the time to appreciate a good day in the squirrel woods, but Eric Maynard, assistant chief of the AGFC’s Education Division, hopes the event will spark some renewed interest in small game.

“It’s hard to imagine with all the deer that are harvested now, but there was a time when squirrel hunting was one of the only games in town, especially on public land,” Maynard said. “It wasn’t until after some dedicated work by the AGFC and other conservation agencies that deer populations rebounded to the levels we see today. During the meantime, if you went hunting, small game like squirrels and rabbits are what you were after to put food on the table.”

In addition to being plentiful practically anywhere in the state, squirrels offer multiple opportunities to shoot on most outings. Small, .17- or .22-caliber rimfire rifles are comfortable for hunters of all ages to carry and shoot, and shotguns from the tiny .410 to 12-gauge duck guns can be used with no. 4 to no. 6 shot if you’re able to stalk within range.

“Squirrels are just a great way to introduce someone to hunting,” Maynard said. “The focus is still on having a good time and less on bagging a trophy. This event isn’t looking to change that, just to give people a little something extra to enjoy from their day in the woods with a friend or family member.”

Maynard says many of the facilities also will have fun activities for participants from noon to 2 p.m. the Saturday of the event, with each location offering a little something different. Registration is not necessary to participate, just show up with your best three squirrels from the day’s hunt and enjoy some fun focused on small game in The Natural State.

Arkansas’s squirrel season is from May 15 until the last day in February each year. The daily limit is 12 squirrels. Take it Slow for Winter Fishing

Randy Zellers Assistant Chief of Communications

LITTLE ROCK — As water temperatures in lakes throughout Arkansas finally start to dip into the 50s, many anglers will hang up their rods and reels after a prolonged warm season that offered many extra days of comfortable fishing. However, for those willing to bundle up and brave a few chilly hours, fishing can still offer some great action if you change your mindset and tactics.

Fish are cold-blooded creatures, meaning they have metabolisms that rise and fall with the temperature of their surroundings. During spring and summer, warm water means higher metabolic rates and more of a need to feed. As the water temperature cools, so does the activity level of bass, crappie and other sport fish, but that doesn’t mean they can go without food entirely. This is the time of year when quality is much more important to fish than quantity. In terms of food, that means getting the most energy for the least amount of energy spent chasing down prey.

Be Patient With Jerks
Cold fronts not only slow the metabolism of larger fish, they outright stun some of the smaller baitfish species, such as threadfin shad and gizzard shad. While some shad will die immediately, most will struggle for a few days before finally succumbing to the temperature if they can’t find some thermal refuge. This means there will be plenty of free and easy food for predator fish to take advantage of just before winter sets in for good. Largemouth bass, spotted bass and smallmouth bass all are gluttons for this shad buffet, but it presents a problem for anglers who try to “match the hatch” so to speak. The day of the cold front, getting a fish to fall for your lure over the real thing can be difficult, but after a day or so a suspending jerkbait can be the ticket. Cast the lure out, crank it down a few turns of the reel handle, then let it pause. Give it a few seconds at rest, then crank a few more reel turns before you pause again. Some people prefer to snap or sweep the rod tip to move the lure and reel up the slack to ensure they give the lure time to rest, while others prefer to crank the handle quickly, saving the wear and tear on their wrists. Either approach can work, but the time you pause can be the key to getting more strikes. Some days, a quick jerk-jerk-pause cadence will elicit a strike, while other days may require a long pause of up to 10 seconds or more to get the fish to finally react.

Lovin’ Spoonful
Another great presentation that fools fish into believing it’s a stunned shad is the jigging spoon, also called a slab spoon. This unassuming chunk of lead with a treble hook tied to the end doesn’t look like much, but when worked properly across the bottom its fluttering fall can offer just the right amount of flash and vibration to trigger a strike from a lethargic bass sitting with its belly on the bottom. Just look for areas without a lot of jagged rocks or woody cover as the open hook of a spoon can lodge into these surfaces and cause more frustration than fun. Cast the lure, let it fall to the bottom, then pop it up with a quick snap of the rod tip. Reel up the slack and stay in touch with the lure as it flutters back to the bottom. The technique looks like a shad that is dying and struggling to get away from predators. Even lethargic fish will find it hard to pass on the easy meal and the sudden snap of the fleeing fish will trigger their predatory instinct to react. Usually the hit will come as the lure is dropping, so keep an eye on your line for it to jump or stop instead of continuing its descent. Don’t be surprised if you catch fish other than bass with this technique, either. Walleye, catfish and even large crappie will take advantage of the easy meal imitated by this lure.

Alabama Bound
Big rewards is what the Alabama rig is all about, both for the fish and the angler. Constructed of wire and jigheads with small swimbaits attached, Alabama rigs mimic a small school of baitfish swimming along over likely cover. In winter, this offers bass a chance at grabbing a few small fish in one swipe. While smaller fish do hit the Alabama rig, it’s known for producing big fish who are looking for a big mouthful. Just be ready for a workout, as casting and retrieving an Alabama rig all day can definitely wear on the shoulders. Use a heavy action rod and lob the lure more than trying to whip it back and cast long distances. Braided line that’s around 80-pound-test breaking strength also can help avoid some tears if your Alabama rig snags up on unseen cover. A slow hard pull can often straighten the hook on the swimbait that’s snagged, allowing you to retrieve the rest of the rig and save a few dollars. Just be sure to loosen the drag on your reel enough to allow a fish to get a good bite on the lure instead of yanking it away when setting the hook. Fish often will set the hook on themselves as this is one of the few winter presentations that will elicit a bone-jarring strike.

Deadly Ned-ly
For decades, many bass anglers believed soft plastics were no good once the water temperature dipped below 60 degrees. Jigs tipped with pork chunks were the only smart option for a slow, bottom-crawling bait. But times and tactics have done a complete turnaround since those days. Small, straight worms like the Zoom finesse worm, Gary Yammamoto’s Senko or the ZMan TRD have proven that it doesn’t take a lot of wavy tentacles to catch a bass’s attention. Sometimes the best action is hardly any action at all. During winter one of the best finesse presentations is the simple Ned rig. Sliding a 2- to 3-inch morsel of a soft-plastic stick bait slowly over the bottom can entice a bite when reaction strikes from the above-mentioned tricks fail to produce. The key to fishing the Ned rig is the size of the jighead. Go as light as possible, and use spinning equipment to keep things small. You don’t want the jighead to crawl around on the bottom but to glide slowly just over it. A 1/16-oz. head with a no. 2 or no. 4 hook is a great option to start learning the technique, and the use of Zman’s special Ned rig soft-plastics will help float the bait. Often you won’t feel a hit, so it’s important to keep a sharp eye on your line for any twitch or odd reaction.

Be sure to check out the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Weekly Fishing Report for up-to-date information on the hot bite across Arkansas. Guides, bait shops and anglers around The Natural State pitch in to make the report as helpful as possible for anglers looking to learn more about fishing year round.

CWD-Positive Deer Found in South Arkansas

Randy Zellers Assistant Chief of Communications

STRONG – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission today confirmed that a hunter-harvested white-tailed deer taken in Union County tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

The deer was harvested in Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge during the permit-based annual modern gun deer hunt. A CWD sample was collected at the check station for that hunt. That sample tested positive for CWD and was confirmed by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Madison.

This is the first case of CWD in Union County. It is unknown where the source of this infection occurred, as it is more than 70 miles from the nearest previous positive case (Issaquena County, Mississippi) and more than 200 miles from the nearest known positive case of CWD in Arkansas.

According to AJ Riggs, wildlife health biologist for the AGFC, 307 CWD samples were submitted in Union County before this first positive case, with 107 of those being submitted since July 2021.

“While we didn’t want to find CWD outside of the current CWD Zone, this positive case confirms that we need to remain vigilant on a statewide level to look for the disease,” Riggs said.

According to Cory Gray, chief of the AGFC’s Research Division, the hunter who harvested the deer has been notified and arrangements are being made to dispose of the meat from the deer.

“With this positive case being so far from any previously known source, we’ve already begun working on ways to gather more samples from the surrounding area to determine the extent of the infection in this part of the state,” Gray said. “We have already begun making plans to place more CWD drop-off containers near the refuge for voluntary testing and are talking with local deer clubs and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to get help in gathering additional samples while deer season is still open. We’re also reaching out to our counterparts at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to coordinate with them and share data to get a better understanding of how far this may have spread.”

Felsenthal NWR Manager Michael Stroeh said, “We are working very closely with AGFC to provide any assistance needed.”

In keeping with the AGFC’s CWD Management and Response Plan, there will be no changes to deer-hunting regulations for the remainder of the 2021-22 deer hunting season.

AGFC Director Austin Booth says the agency will evaluate the need for any expansion of the CWD Management Zone and regulations concerning deer hunting during the hunting regulations-setting process once the season is over.

“We intend to hold public meetings about our findings at the conclusion of deer season, but the best way local hunters can help us is to take advantage of the free testing facilities and get their deer tested for CWD,” Booth said. “More samples means more chances to find any new concentrations of the disease and gives our staff a better picture of the landscape so they can make better-informed decisions moving forward.”

Hunters who wish to have their deer tested for CWD can voluntarily take the head of the deer, with 6 inches of neck still attached, to one of the AGFC’s network of participating taxidermists to have a sample tested for free. They also may drop off the head at one of dozens of CWD-testing collection stations positioned throughout the state. A list of CWD-testing facilities is available at www.agfc.com/cwd. Local landowners near Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge also may contact the AGFC to participate in surveillance efforts in the area. For more information, call 501-412-5434

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, caribou and moose. It was first detected in Arkansas Feb. 23, 2016. Since the first detection, AGFC has tested more than 37,877 deer and elk from across the state. To date, 1,182 deer and 35 elk have tested positive for the disease in Arkansas.

Research indicates that CWD is caused by a misfolded protein called a prion transmitted through feces, urine and saliva. Prions can survive for years in soil and plants. CWD can have an incubation period of at least 16 months, which means infected animals may not show immediate signs of disease. CWD prions accumulate throughout the body and affect an animal’s nervous system. The diseased prions cause normal cellular proteins to misfold into abnormal shapes, which accumulate until neural cells cease to function. Infected animals begin to lose weight, lose their appetite and develop an insatiable thirst. They may separate from their herds, walk in repetitive patterns, carry their head low, salivate, urinate frequently and grind their teeth.

His compassionate heart and desire to help individuals within the community have led him to work in the non-profit field. He has served as the Resource Development Director for UWFSA since December of 2018.

“The United Way Search Committee is excited to announce the hiring of Shea Foldvary as our new President and CEO after a lengthy and broad hiring process. Mr. Foldvary is a seasoned non-profit professional, and we look forward to his innovative and energetic leadership style in the coming years.”, said Rob Ratley, United Way board member and search committee chairman.

“I am excited and honored to be selected as the new President and CEO of United Way of Fort Smith Area. The work of United Way is vital to the six-county community we serve in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. Having been involved with United Way for many years as a volunteer, advocate, donor, and more recently the Resource Development Director, I am grateful to serve my hometown community in a greater capacity and lead the organization forward.”, Foldvary said.

Foldvary was born and raised in Fort Smith and, upon graduation from Southside High School in 2008, attended the University of Central Arkansas, majoring in political science. Foldvary is a member of the Leadership Fort Smith Class of 2022 and serves on the Board of Directors for the FSPD Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.

He is most proud of his family. He and his wife Kristi reside in Greenwood with their son Hudson.

The United Way of Fort Smith Area has been serving individuals and families in Crawford, Franklin, Logan, and Sebastian counties in Arkansas and LeFlore and Sequoyah counties in Oklahoma since 1928.
