Saturday Evenings at the Movies

By Dr. Curtis Varnell

Cringing in fear, I sat between my two uncles fearfully gazing at the big screen and watching the horrifying story unfold.  I don’t know the year but I know I was way too young to be watching a T-rex pursue and devour cattle and men in the movie, The Beast of Hollow Mountain. My first movie and I can still recall some of the scenes.

For a big portion of the last century, the local theater was the place to be, especially on a Saturday afternoon or evening.  Every town of any size had at least one, and some several, theaters where the teenagers would congregate and enjoy visiting and watching the latest movies.

Whether it was the Gem Theater (Charleston), the Reata (Danville), Savage (Booneville), Scott (Waldron) or Logan (Paris), the local theater was the place to be for teenagers, especially on Saturday evenings.

The most common genres were the horror stories featuring Godzilla, King Kong, or even more horrifying creatures like the blob, Hitchcock’s The Birds, or the creature from the Black Lagoon.  I think my uncles particularly liked these because their frightened dates would sit much closer to them and clutch their hands throughout the movie.

My favorite were always the westerns. I loved movies featuring John Wayne, Roy Rogers, and later Clint Eastwood. I can still recall clutching my quarter to purchase my ticket and then finding my way through the darkened theater to my favorite seat.  If I had enough money, I could purchase a soda, candy bar, and popcorn for another quarter.

The theaters were plush with velvet seats, carpeted floors, and surround sound.  Up until the 1920’s, theaters were live performances and available only for the wealthy.  With the development of movies, theater entertainment became available to all and theater owners made them extremely nice to give the working class a taste of the finer things in life.

Most people over the age of forty can identify with those days of standing in line waiting patiently for your turn to buy a ticket and can still recall the smell of the buttered popcorn and other refreshments that could be purchased at the concession stand.  Many married couples can still remember their first date- a trip to the theater- and probably the movie that was playing at the time.

One of my first dates was at the Paris drive-in theater and the movie was the tear jerker, Love Story.  Drive-ins, another thing of the past, allowed you to sit in your own car while watching the movie.  You would drive up onto a small banked hill about sundown, turn off your lights, and fasten your microphone to your car window, and enjoy the latest movies.  Sometimes, families would bring entire pick-up loads of kids, back up to the sound device, and sit in lawn chairs in the truck bed while watching the movie. Many enjoyable spring and summer nights were spent in this manner.

Times have changed, people travel further for entertainment, and large theaters offering ten or twelve movie choices have taken the place of our community theaters.  The old movie theaters stand deserted and quite but, as we pass by, we still remember our Saturdays at the Movies.

Cossatot River Senior Girls Get Overtime Road Conference Win at Paris

The Paris Lady Eagles hosted conference newcomer Cossatot River to Paris Gymnasium on Friday. Paris hosted the junior and senior girls games with Cossatot River. The Paris junior girls won an impressive game over the Lady Eagles of Cossatot in the first game of the night. Boys games were not played due to COVID issues within the Cossatot boys team. The senior boys game with Cossatot will be made up later this month.

After trailing for most of the game, Paris battled back to force a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation on two clutch free throws by Paris’s Jadyn Hart with a little more than nine seconds to go.

But at the start of the overtime period, it was the Cossatot River Lady Eagles racing out to 7-0 run to start the period and eventually going on to win the conference game. For Paris, the loss was the second conference loss for the week, and the third consecutive loss dating back to December. The road will not get any easier for Paris next week. Paris will travel to Cedarville on Tuesday to play the Lady Pirates.

Paris started the season with a number of sophomore players who had played very little or no varsity minutes heading into the season. The team has been up and down for most of the season, and with the loss of junior forward Akira Robinson last week, the Lady Eagles have struggled to score. Looking down the schedule, Paris will have to improve quickly if they hope to finish in the top half of the conference and to avoid playing a top seed in the senior district tournament. Defensively, Paris left outside shooters open for three-point shots that propelled Cossatot to victory. In some cases, the shooter was left unguarded and was never forced off of their spot to shoot the ball. Left open for uncontested shots, the Cossatot shooters were devastating to the Lady Eagles ability to win the game.

Paris hopes to have Robinson back and available to play at Cedarville on Tuesday. The team played one of their best quarters of the year in the third quarter when they fought their way back into the game with improved intensity and offensive rebounding. Jadyn Hart stepped up to the free throw line with the game on the line and the team trailing by two points to hit two clutch free throws to send the game into overtime.

It was very encouraging after the big loss at Charleston to see Paris fight back in the second half. It is too bad that they came up a little short. I look for Paris to play hard again on Tuesday and take a crucial conference game with the Lady Pirates at Cedarville. The return of Robinson will be big for the team for not only what she can add to the team, but it will also return the players to their natural positions that they played prior to the loss of Robinson to the lineup.

Resident Press Photo

Just as it is important for a team to keep playing hard regardless of the score on the scoreboard, it will be important for the team to focus on each game, regardless of the conference standings. The team’s goal at this point is to improve with each game and be playing their best basketball at the time of the district tournament. That is exactly what I expect this young and talented team to do over the next six weeks of the season.

Paris will host Booneville on Friday night for Winter Court night. It will be a big night at Paris Gymnasium, and for the Lady Eagles, they will have to be wary of the distractions of the Winter Court activities and remain focused on a very important conference match-up with the Lady Bearcats. So for Paris, if they have hopes of getting back into the upper half of the conference standings, the Lady Eagles need to get two big conference wins next week. And for the Paris faithful, this team needs your support more than ever. Come out to the games and cheer on your Lady Eagles!

Resident Press

Photos from both the junior and senior girls games with Cossatot will be available on Facebook at Paris Eagles Sports on Sunday night.

Resident Press will be in Cedarville on Tuesday night to bring you all of the action in the online edition of RP on Wednesday night. See you at the games, and support your Lady Eagles!

Waldron’s Patrick Paving The Way In Pageantry One Crown At A Time

Pictured is Madison in her first public appearance at Atlas in Waldron reading “The Night Before Christmas” on December 23.

Hey ya’ll! My name is Madison Patrick and I am your 2021 USA National Miss Arkansas! My journey in pageantry began in 2017 when I was 16 years old. I had always dreamed of being in a pageant when I was a little girl and when I was just 5 years old I drew this picture for my mom! (pictured below) I remember watching Miss America and Miss USA at a young age and just dreaming of being like those girls one day. The first pageant I competed in was the Arkansas-Oklahoma state fair pageant where I didn’t place or win an award at all! Despite that, I continued to pursue my dreams in pageantry.

The picture I drew of myself in a pageant when I was just 5 years old

I have held a few titles including Miss Dogg Days, Miss Teen Heart of the Homeland, Miss Scott County Fair Queen (where I placed top 4 in my state prelim pageant and then moved to state finals), UNM Miss Scott County 2019, USA National Miss Arkansas Teen 2019 (where I went to Orlando, FL to compete in Nationals and placed in the top 15), and UNM Miss River Valley 2021. I am currently the USA National Miss Arkansas 2021 and I am so excited to be serving Arkansas this upcoming year.

I will be attending Nationals July 4-10 this summer at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! My platform is called Operation BEaUtiful- promoting positive body image. I have a passion for building others up, helping them gain self-confidence, and helping them believe in themselves. As part of the USA National Miss system, being your Arkansas state titleholder, we have an anti-bullying platform we all promote together- Crown C.A.R.E.S! AAA Adds FIFA And Madden As Newest Gaming Titles For Esports

AAA partners with PlayVS, the official scholastic esports platform, to recognize the first true sports titles as Varsity competition for Spring 2021, offering players a virtual, competitive alternative to contact sports amid COVID-19.

North Little Rock — January 6, 2021 — The Arkansas Activities Association announced in partnership with PlayVS an expansion of its recognized varsity title offerings to include FIFA 21 and Madden NFL 21 for the upcoming Spring 2021 season, which previously only included strategy and combat games like League of Legends and SMITE. Amid continued COVID-19 concerns and traditional sports reworking their infrastructure, the value of esports is evident now more than ever and the AAA is excited to provide high school students a safe extracurricular environment in which to experience it.

Two of the most popular sports titles in the world, FIFA and Madden, boast real professional football and soccer players on their real professional teams. EA’s long-running sport simulation franchises represent all of the excitement of the sports gamers know and puts them in the center of the action. These titles will join Rocket League and League of Legends as AAA sanctioned esports (Activities).

“We are very excited to be adding these 2 very popular games to our sanctioned esports,” said Derek Walter, Assistant Executive Director. “Since starting esports in Arkansas we have had many requests for both of these sports titles. We look forward to seeing our participation numbers in Arkansas continue to grow and keep students engaged in their activities and their school work.”

How PlayVS’ FIFA & Madden Leagues will work:

  • High school FIFA and Madden teams will compete in PlayVS High School leagues for the AAA sanctioned varsity competition.
  • Teams will be made up of three players. Teams will play three 1v1 matches, and whoever wins the best-of-three series will be declared the winner.
  • Schools can register an unlimited number of teams.
  • Top teams at the end of the season will advance to playoffs and compete for a AAA state championship.
  • Spring regular season starts the week of March 1 with FIFA matches played weekly on Tuesdays and Madden matches on Thursdays.
  • High Schools can now sign up and register teams at PlayVS.com

“The NFHS Network is proud to support the addition of FIFA and Madden to the high school esports gaming portfolio,” said NFHS Network Vice President, Mark Koski. “These are incredibly popular game titles among students — as our first sports titles — we will now offer a new kind of competition to our players and expand the appeal of our platform to a larger audience. We can’t wait to recognize the first-ever FIFA and Madden high school state champions across the country.”

Esports, in nature, allows players to compete in a hybrid of settings – from a computer lab, in-person at school, or from a gaming console or PC/laptop at home – which will allow for optimal participation heading into an uncertain school year this fall. With PlayVS, the AAA has been able to afford students even more opportunities to safely compete and hone their skills in STEM and team collaboration during the current COVID-19 crisis. To meet the needs of communities, schools, and students, teams are allowed to compete remotely in order to maintain social distancing while still enjoying the camaraderie, competition, and social connections esports provides. This cost-effective offering also helps schools push students to continue to achieve excellence, while they may not be back in school full-time, through GPA and attendance requirements, scholarship opportunities, and more.

The AAA strives to give every kind of student the opportunity to be involved in an extracurricular activity by bringing esports programs to high schools, encouraging students’ participation regardless of gender, physical ability, or socioeconomic status. Many higher education institutions already compete in esports, with more than 200 colleges and universities offering nearly $10M in scholarship opportunities.

Hartford School Property to be Auctioned

The Hartford School property, located at 508 W. Main Street, will go up for Auction on Tuesday, February 9 at 11 a.m. The auction sign saddened the hearts of those who long remember and cherish the memories of the school.

The school had consolidated with the Hackett School District in 2014. Then, in early 2018, the announcement was made that the school would be closing. In an interview following that announcement, Superintendent Eddie Ray stated “the cost to operate our district is exceeding the funding we receive from the state to operate.”

On Friday, May 25, the students, faculty and staff heard a broken and emotional voice come over the intercom one final time. It was a dismissal, the final dismissal. The Hartford School campus closed.

Following the schools closure, many citizens expressed concerns about the future of their children and the town.  “Hartford School was the heartbeat of our town,” said Kathleen Harbottle. The decision forced many families to move out the area, others to be split between Mansfield and Hackett Schools.

On Tuesday, February 27, a group of concerned citizens met to discuss the prospect of forming a charter school. Ultimately, a board was formed and an application was submitted to the state board. In August of 2018 the charter school application for Sugarloaf Valley Academy was denied. The panel found that there wasn’t a demonstrated need shown for the school and they “had concerns about whether it could attract a sufficient number of students to be financially viable.”

In the meantime, the school’s buildings were boarded up, a symbolic finality to the efforts of the community who tried valiantly to save their school.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2021, the school will be auctioned off, and sold regardless of price. The auction listing states the sale includes vacant land, gymnasiums, classroom buildings and metal buildings. There are approximately 20+/- acres, which will be sold in multiple tracts. For more information on the auction, and live bidding, you can visit Looper Auction and Realty’s website.

Best Money Saving Apps

Almost everyone enjoys saving money, and there are apps solely created to allow us to do just that. I have 4 I use to get cash back on my purchases.

1. Ibotta- Ibotta works at particular stores with cash back on specific items. There are also often brandless items which work regardless of the brand you buy. These are common on milk and eggs. Ibotta works at Walmart, Dollar General, and Family Dollar just to name a few.

A look inside the Ibotta app.

2. Dosh- Dosh is a little different than the others, it works in the background watching your purchases on your debit card and giving cash back when possible. Additionally you can go through the app to see what purchases can be made for refunds.

An example offer in the Dosh app. Receive 10% back on a Walmart+ Membership

3. Rakuten (you may remember the name eBates from commercials) is very helpful for online shopping! It works with most sites I’ve looked for with rebates ranging from 1% to 15%, and it changes often. I try to always go through the app before making an online purchase.

4. Checkout 51- similar to Ibotta, Checkout 51 has offers that you can claim, then redeem by uploading your receipt. The difference with Checkout 51 is they work with any store as long as the right items are purchased. Additionally Checkout 51 offers cash back on gas at particular gas stations.

An example of an offer for gas in the Checkout 51 app.

5. Fetch- probably the easiest of all is Fetch. There is no need for prep work, no offers to review; just scan your receipt in the app! Fetch will look for offers and give you the refund.

These are apps I keep on my phone and try to remember to use. Some can all be done together like Dosh, Ibotta (or Checkout 51) and Fetch maximizing you cash back!

Raggio Is All The Rage In Rattler Country

Coming in at 6’6, senior Magazine Rattler, Cameron Raggio, is the tallest player on his basketball team and boy is it paying off nicely! Since recovering from an ACL tear last season, it seems this year that Cameron has not only been unstoppable in every sport he graces but according to his coaches, he is a great example of work ethic and perseverance as well. On the court, Raggio has been averaging 12.7 ppg, 9.3 boards per game, 1.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game so far.

“Cam is very humble and is a quiet, lead by example player,” expressed coach Justin Mackey. “He is extremely active in athletics for Magazine, suiting up for every sport offered. He is involved in multiple community service projects and is always willing to help others.” Recently Cameron even received an offer from the University of Arkansas at Monticello to play football. “I’m hoping to play college football after high school. I just love the competition and strive to be better every time I touch the court or field,” Raggio stated.

But when it comes to basketball, “I’ve been playing since I was in kindergarten I believe. I was always an active kid. My mom was a great player when she was in high school, and she along with my dad and my brother are who influenced me to play. I’ve been able to do so well this year because of my experience. I have had major playing time in all my years on the Sr. High team. Now I’m able to use my knowledge while I’m fully developed.”

The Rattlers have competed in 8 games this season and have scored wins in two of them. One against UCA and one against WYC. “My favorite game so far this season was definitely Union Christian. Our first win with Coach Mackey definitely felt good. For our remaining games, I don’t really have one I’m looking forward to. The next one is always what’s on my mind.”

Raggio concluded “I would just like to add how thankful I am for coach Mackey this year. He has helped not only develop me on the court, but also into a better man. Growing up, I always went to the games. I looked up to the guys on the court and I looked up to my brother when he played. Now, I get to be one of those guys. One of those guys I used to want to be. That’s why it’s so great to be a Rattler!”

Next up for the Magazine Rattlers, they will be hosting a huge conference showdown with the Mansfield Tigers on Friday, January 8th.

January is School Board Member Recognition Month in Arkansas

0

The Arkansas School Boards Association (ASBA) announced that January is School Board Member Recognition Month in Arkansas.

School board members play an essential role in our community. Mansfield School District will join other districts in Arkansas in celebration of our board by thanking them for the time, talents, and knowledge they bring to our district and for their commitment to the families and children of our community.

“Our board members assume a crucial role in representing our students and advocating for public education,” said Joe Staton, Superintendent. “We are very proud of our members, and Arkansas School Board Recognition Month is a great time to recognize them and celebrate their accomplishments.” Staton added that elected school board members give our Mansfield citizens a voice in education decision making. “While we make a special effort to show our appreciation in January, their contribution is a year-round commitment.”

The members serving our district are as follows: Rick Nicodemus, President; Mike Gipson, Vice-President; Dewayne Ward, Secretary; Lesli Baggett, Member, and Ronnie Black, Member. The school board members will be recognized and presented a certificate at the January board meeting.

Best Beginner Essential Oils

Essential oils have been around since biblical times, and their popularity has been growing again in modern days. There is an oil for almost everything, and there are a multitude of options. For those looking to give oils a try the variety can be overwhelming, but a small collection of a few oils is a great place to start!

Not all companies are providing pure oils, but there are still a few choices when it comes to providers of quality oils. To know you are getting a good essential oil read the ingredients, it’s also a good idea to check for a website for the brand.

My personal choice for brands are Plant Therapy and Eden’s Garden. They are where I buy all the oils I keep in rotation. I also have used Birch Hill Happenings and Young Living. Of course there are other brands that are just as good! Walmart and Amazon brands could be safe- it is important to do research.

1. Lavender- the first oil I always want on hand is lavender. It is calming, helps with stings or bites from bugs, and it is kid safe.

2. Lemon- I just love the fresh clean lemon scent. Lemon or lime I usually in my diffuser; but lemon is definitely my favorite because it makes me feel like my house is clean. Lemon also provides digestive support and is detoxifying.

3. Peppermint- my go to for headaches and tummy aches. Peppermint is also excellent for congestion relief.

4. Frankincense- this oil wasn’t brought to baby Jesus for no reason- it is a powerhouse! When my kids are sick I use it for a detox bath for them. We diffuse it often with lime to clear the air, and it’s great for muscle pain relief!

5. Tea Tree- clear acne, head lice treatment, anti fungal, and the list goes on! Really another powerhouse of an oil!

Those are my top 5 oils for beginners! A carrier oil is necessary for any oil to be applied topically. I use coconut oil primarily, but there are lots of options for carriers too. I encourage everyone to do their own research and follow proper dilution guidelines for each oil. I hope this gives a starting place for those interested in diving into the world of essential oils.
