Eagles Road Woes Continue as Paris Drops Pair at Booneville

After losing both junior high boys and girls games in Paris the night before, the senior high Paris teams traveled to Booneville on Tuesday night to play an important conference game with the Lady Bearcats and the Bearcats. The results were the same, Booneville won both conference games and sent Paris home scratching their heads as to what has happened in the past two weeks. The Paris Eagles boys team lost to Booneville by a score of 56-34, and the Lady Eagles were defeated 58-32.

The Lady Eagles, who had a very good month of January, have now apparently lost their momentum and have dropped their last two games, both of which have been on the road. The Lady Eagles lost at Atkins on January 28. Now, following last night’s road loss at Booneville, Paris must regroup and do it quickly as they will again play on the road at Jessieville on Friday night.

The Lady Eagles remain in fourth place in the conference with the loss of Atkins to Lamar on Tuesday night. Paris is now alone in fourth place, and it appears most likely that Paris must try to maintain fourth place now that they are two games behind Jessieville who is in third place. To finish third, the Lady Eagles must defeat Jessieville on Friday night and hope for some help from the rest of the conference to give the Lady Lions another conference loss. Either way, it looks like there is a good chance that the Lady Eagles will play Atkins in the first round of the senior district tournament. Paris’s first round opponents will not be determined until the end of the conference season and the final standings are known. If Atkins is the first round opponent, Paris must find ways to get more offensive production against the Lady Red Devils than they did in their last meeting.

After Tuesday night’s games around the conference, the standings are:

Lamar 12-0

Perryville 8-3

Jessieville 7-4

Paris 5-6

Atkins 5-7

It should also be noted that Atkins has played 12 conference games to date and Paris has played 11. This means that Paris will have to win one additional game going down the stretch to hold on to fourth place in the loss column.

The Paris senior boys team also suffered a double-digit loss last evening as the Eagles had no answer for the Booneville defense. Paris continues to have scoring issues, and if things were not bad enough for this team, senior Nick Bazyk left the game in the second half with an apparent injury. Paris has missed the scoring and pressure defense of Dylan Krigbaum for the past several games as he too has been out due to injury. The potential combined loss of both Krigbaum and Bazyk is devastating to an Eagles team that has fought hard all season and has needed the scoring of both players to stay in games late. Bazyk’s status is unknown to Resident Press as of the publication time of this article.

The Paris junior Eagles and Lady Eagles will play on Thursday night at Paris gymnasium in a make-up game versus Perryville. Like their senior high counterparts, the junior high teams lost a pair of games to Booneville on Monday night and need to quickly regroup to play a tough Perryville program. Paris finishes with Perryville on Thursday and will go on the road to Jessieville for their final conference regular season game on Friday. Paris will have to play three days in a row as the first round of the district tournament will begin on Saturday. The junior high district tournament will be held at Perryville High School.

For Paris fans, there is a lot of basketball left this week and beyond. Both the senior high teams and the junior high teams need your support now more than ever. It will begin tomorrow night in Paris, and the junior high teams need a big crowd for the important games with Perryville.

The best way to get the bad taste out from a loss is with a win, and for Paris, they have the opportunity to play soon and get those needed victories. The Eagles and Lady Eagles are at a crossroads in the season, and the next three days may tell us how they will respond. Paris fans will look for their teams to bear down and take it to their opponents following the disappointing losses over the past week.

Sr Bulldogs Continue To Remain Bulletproof

WOWZA!! After going 23-10 in last year’s basketball season setting a school record and making it to State, the Waldron Sr High Bulldogs are saying “please sir, may I have anotha?” Coming off of their sixth win in a row after last night’s battle against the Lincoln Wolves, the Bulldogs now sit 21-4 in total season play. Beating the Wolves 86-65, the Bulldogs upgraded their conference play record to 10-1.

“We have to stay humble and hungry and continue to work toward our goals and show up each day and get better,” explained coach, Joshua Brown. The Bulldogs picked up 12 steals in the game with Payton Brown leading with three as well as 44 total rebounds with Jacob Avila leading offensively with six and Braden Willimas leading defensively with six. Brown led in scoring with 46 points followed by Gada Wagner with nine, Isaac “The Real” Villarreal with eight, Bryson Bailey with five, Avila, Williams, Mason Ford, and Camdon Holcomb with four apiece, and Jaden Hutchens with two.

As it stands right now, the Bulldogs are the number two seed in their conference division under the undefeated (10-0) Charleston Tigers. This Friday, Waldron will host the Charleston Tigers in one of the biggest games of the season. A win Friday night would place the Bulldogs tied for first in conference play with Charleston. Waldron holds their only conference loss to the Tigers so this time it’s personal. “We have to play better defensively this time around and make sure we do a great job of contesting shots and not giving up second-chance opportunities.”

The Bulldogs are inviting all fans to show up and “Pack The WAC” this Friday, February 7 as Waldron prepares to destroy the Tigers. Friday is also Eddie Night in memory of Eddie Harrison so fans are being asked to wear green.

Parole Hearing Held for Bynum

James Bynum, the Scott County man convicted on two counts of sexual assault, had a hearing before the Arkansas Parole Board on January 30. On February 3, the board denied Bynum’s request for parole.

In November 2019, Bynum was convicted and sentenced to five years for count one, and five years for count two. That sentence was to run consecutively, and the court considered time already served. Bynum must also be registered as a sex offender, and was fined $2,500 for each of those two counts of sexual assault.

Jr Tigers Send Sea Sick Pirates Packing

The Mansfield Jr High Tigers have had it rough the last couple of games. For their first match of February, the Tigers hosted the Greenland Pirates on Tuesday night. This was the second to last game that the Jr Tigers would play until Districts the week of February tenth. At the end of the first quarter, the Tigers were down 11-2. After a highly motivational speech by Mansfield coach, Keith Stovall, a fire was lit under the Tigers tails.

Clint Stovall

Holding the Pirates to just one more point before halftime, Mansfield was only down 12-8. After a quick water break and a Stovall speech, Mansfield marched backed onto the court determined to make magic happen in the second half of the game. Both teams kept each other grounded in the third quarter by allowing zero pace to be picked up by the opposing team and the score sat at 15-14.

Braxton Byers

Time was winding down and the Tigers were more determined than ever to shut the Pirates party down once and for all. With five minutes left in the game, the Tigers took their first lead of the evening but lost it shortly after to a Greenland three-pointer. As fans were going wild with all of the back and forth action, the Tigers had enough of the cat and mouse game. With one minute left, Mansfield was back on top with a Tyler Turnipseed three-pointer putting the Tigers at 21-19.

Tyler Turnipseed

35 seconds were left on the clock and the anxiety in the gym was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Fans were holding their breath, coaches were clenching their teeth, and the Tigers were cool as a cucumber knowing that they were about the execute a plan that would win the game. It was Mansfield’s turn to take the ball out. Braxton Byers placed himself on the outside line ready to throw the ball in. As his teammates got into formation, Byers bounced the ball off the back of a Pirate player, allowing him to maintain possession to then delivered the most epic two-point bucket. After earning a few more hoops, the Tigers walked away from the battle with a 28-21 win upgrading their season to 5-9.

Drew Elmore

Drew Elmore led his team in scoring with nine points while Clint Stovall earned six, Tyler Turnipseed made five, and Braxton Byers and Austin Quinalty netted four each. The Tigers also achieved 24 rebounds and four steals to end the evening. In their final game of the season before District, the Tigers will host the West Fork Tigers on Friday, February 7 starting at 4 p.m. Mansfield will be going into district play as the number eight seed facing Charleston. “We lost two very close games to them in season,” said coach Keith Stovall. “But we can win that game if we cut out the mental mistakes.”

Lady Pirates Pull Lincoln by the Tail

By Jaclyn Almanza

The Jr High Lady Pirates had a battle for second place in conference against Lincoln’s Lady Wolves at Cedarville Monday evening.

This game was an intense and physical game, where all girls worked their hardest to pull out a win. But, the Lady Wolves were outworked by the Lady Pirates.

Cedarville-Pirates-Basketball

The Lady Pirates started off leading the scoreboard in the first quarter with 8-4 . The Lady Pirates held their ground in the second quarter still in the lead. In the third and last quarter, the Lady Wolves were catching up and soon the teams were tied. The Lady Pirates knew they had to win so they worked past their limit and pushed themselves.

The game became restless by jumping back and forth from defense to offense from steals and fouls. The last few seconds were battled to see who would take the win. The Lady Pirates won with a final score of 36-33.
