Lavaca Middle School Named Distinguished School

January 9th, 2019: The National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA) is pleased to announce that Lavaca Middle School from Lavaca, Arkansas has been named a National ESEA Distinguished School by the state education agency in Arkansas. Lavaca Middle School is one of up to 100 schools throughout the country that is being nationally recognized for exceptional student achievement in 2018.
A project of the NAESPA, the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students.  It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, showcasing the success of hundreds of schools in one of three categories:

  • Category 1: Exceptional student performance for two consecutive years
  • Category 2: Closing the achievement gap between student groups
  • Category 3: Excellence in serving special populations of students

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides additional resources for vulnerable students and federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of public elementary and secondary education.
The Association is a membership organization made up of State ESEA Program Administrators, and their staff from each of the states and territories, charged with managing their state federal education program. They ensure compliance with federal regulations, but more importantly work to see that all children — especially those living in economically disadvantaged conditions — have the opportunity to receive a high quality education.
NAESPA implements the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program to highlight selected schools that have successfully used their ESEA federal funds to improve the education for all students–including economically disadvantaged students. More information about all National ESEA Distinguished Schools is available on the ESEA Network website: www.ESEAnetwork.org.

Sr Bulldogs Bear Loss But Keep Spirit

The Waldron Bulldogs had a very special night last night. Along with hosting the Charleston Tigers, they also honored the life of a Waldron graduate and wonderful teacher for 53 years in the Waldron School District. Eddie Harrison passed away on December 15, 2018, and the Bulldog community was asked to wear green for liver cancer awareness in his honor.

Both Sr High Bulldog teams had court issues and got knocked off by the Charleston Tigers. The Bulldogs lost 76-55 while the Lady Dogs had a loss of 52-24. Handling the ball well and keeping the Lady Bulldogs team under control was senior Sam Slater and junior Chelsea Stidman. Head Coach for the 1-4 Lady Bulldogs, Josh Atchley, said, “We have to do a better job of controlling the boards as well as playing the game at the speed we want. Our next game against Elkins will be another challenging opponent in our tough conference. We have made some strides towards our goals but still must continue to battle and Elkins on Friday night will be another test.”

The 4-1 Bulldogs were down 23 points in the 3rd quarter and got it to within 9 points with about 5 minutes to go in the game but just didn’t have enough in their tank to come out on top. Payton Brown scored 42 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while Gada Wagner had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Drew Dozier walked away with 6 points and 4 rebounds and the Bulldogs as a whole succeeded in 24 rebounds and 4 steals. Head Coach, Joshua Brown, says, “We have to come back and get better.  Basketball is a game of runs and they just had more runs in them tonight. I’m proud of our guys for never giving up and fighting their way back to give themselves a chance in the fourth.”

The Bulldogs will head to Elkins with everyone healthy and injury free on Friday, January 11 at 6:30 pm.

Sr Tigers Flyin’ High On Threes

Last nights game between both Sr High Mansfield Tiger teams and West Fork Tiger teams definitely weren’t lacking in intensity and zest. The Mansfield Lady Tigers fell short 50-42, bringing their conference play record to 0-6. The Mansfield Tigers lost by one heart-stopping point 64-63 placing the Tigers 1-5 in conference play.

Amber Elmore

The Lady Tigers kept it close the entire game, keeping pace and matching the West Fork Lady Tigers shot for shot. Mansfield kept the lead for most of the game but in the end, time just wasn’t on their side. Maggie Strunk, Makayla Strutton, Rylea Weaver, Amber Elmore, and Brooke Wright all put points on the board for the Lady Tigers. Macy Davis and Mikayla Harrison were a few of the defensive workhorses who contributed to the Lady Tigers power plays.

Makayla Strutton and Macy Davis

Although the boys’ game truly can’t be described in words, I will do my best. I would be surprised if everyone in the gym didn’t walk away from the boys game feeling like they had just done 5 hours of a 1980s Denise Austin work out video. From standing to crouching to sitting on the edge of your seat to even jumping with excitement. (I refrained from jumping as I didn’t want to hurt myself) It was evident with their play and emotion on the court, that the Tigers played one of their best games of the season. Ethan Stovall scored an impressive 23 points. Codi Chick and Layton Howard brought in a combined 24 points. And Tyler Holmes, Colton Stipins, Isaac Cothran, and JoJo Bailey secured the remainder of the Tigers points.

#12 Codi Chick and #1 Layton Howard

The Mansfield Tigers will stay home and face the Charleston Tigers on Friday, January 11 for their Homecoming. Ceremony events start at 5 and games start at 6 pm.

Lavaca Completely Dominates Hector

Photos by Amanda Hall

The Hector Wildcats ran into a buzz saw Tuesday night when they came into Lavaca. The Golden Arrows hosted three games last night. The evening started out with the Junior Lady Arrows verses the Junior Lady Wildcats. The Junior Lady Arrows looked to rebound from a tough loss Monday to Cedarville, and rebound they did! The Ladies of Lavaca came out and took control of the game early and never looked back. When the final horn sounded Lavaca claimed a 43-33 win. Rylie Green led the team with 23 points and Anna Todaro added another 12. Junior Ladies are now 3-1 in conference and in 2nd place behind Mountainburg. Coach Jonathan Vire had this to say about his team,

“I was proud of how the girls fought to gut that one out. Anna got hurt with 5 minutes or so left in the game and I was proud of them stepping up when one of our leaders went down. We found a way to grind it out. Hector cut it to two with about 2:45 left, but then we finished the game with a 10-2 run. Everyone that played did something to help us win.”

Junior Lady Arrows

Next up was the Lavaca Lady Arrows. The senior high Ladies put on a show Last night beating the Lady Wildcats 58-30. It was a night when everything was clicking. The Lady Arrows had three players with double digit scoring. Skylar Hyatt led the team with 19, BethAnn May had 12, and Hope Headley added another 10. Sierra Lamb was stellar on defense and had more than a half dozen steals. The Lady Arrows move to 5-0 in conference with the win. They will travel to Danville Friday night to play for sole possession of first place in conference. Coach Wyles had this to say about Friday’s matchup,

“Friday is a big game for us. Danville is very skilled and athletic. We’re going to have to control the boards and limit them to one shot per possession. We’re going to have to do a better job Friday of keeping them out of the lane than we did tonight.”

Lady Arrows Dominate

The senior boys completed the trifecta last night beating the Wildcats 72-35. The Arrows played well on both ends of the court last night. Jayger Wagner led the team with 17 points and Andrew Wright added another 15 points. Both Jayger and Andrew hit five 3’s a piece. Lavaca shut down the defensive end of the court all night. The Arrows move to 5-0 in conference and will compete with the Danville Little Johns Friday night in a first place game. Coach Reed is pleased with the way his team is playing right now and had this to say,

“Friday will be tough but I like the way we’re playing right now. We are moving the ball as good as we have all season. Our defensive intensity was better tonight and our offense fed off it. I’m excited for Friday and we will be ready.”

Jr Tigers Doubledown on West Fork

The Jr High Mansfield Tigers took on the West Fork Tigers last night in one incredible shoot out. The Lady Tigers led the way to victory 23-22 in the first game of the night. The girls blew the doors off the gym with their high octane defense and fast-paced offense and kept the West Fork Lady Tigers trying to figure out what was going to happen next. It was the true definition of a cat and mouse basketball game. The Lady Tigers upgraded their conference play record to 3-4 and plan to continue moving up the ladder of success when they face the Charleston Tigers on Thursday. Leading her team in points was Skylynn Harris with 8 and Kynslee Ward on her heals with 7. Rounding out the final score with a combined total of 8 points was Sadie Roberts, Alyson Edwards, and Natalie Allison.

Skylynn Harris

The Jr High Tigers were firing on all cylinders during last nights game. Almost every Tiger that came in contact with the ball ended up putting points on the board, showing off their unbeaten court skills. The (5-2) Tigers outscored their opponents by 5 points, walking away with the win 32-27.

(L-R) Zayne Dugan, Dalton Pettigrew, and Braxton Byers

Hitting double digits with 10 points was Ethan Pettus. Tyler Escalante brought in 6 points. Zayne Dugan scored 5 points. And Clint Stovall, Dalton Pettigrew, and Steven Perez secured a combined total of 11 points. The Jr High Tigers will play again Thursday, January 10 when they head to Charleston to take on their second Tiger team of the week. Game time is at 4:30 pm.

From the heart of a local Pastor, Konnor McKay

From The Heart Of A Local Pastor
Do You Have The Fruits of God’s Spirit?

When someone opens their heart to God for salvation, they receive the finished work that was done for us at the cross. When Jesus gave his life for each one of us, he gave us hope of eternal life if we will dedicate our life to living for him, as well as believing in him. But wait, this is not all we receive. Upon salvation, we receive someone called The Holy spirit (John 14:26). The Holy spirit is one part of The Triune Godhead (1 John 5:7-8) , Who God our Father sends us to comfort, convict, and help us in our everyday life!

Anytime you feel that still small voice in your head saying “Don’t do that!” Or “This doesn’t seem right” or even when you are feeling the need of salvation, you are experiencing the works of The Holy Spirit. He was sent here to dwell in our heart, help us when we need encouraged, and comfort us when we need peace.
But with receiving God’s Holy spirit, also with him comes the Fruits of God’s Holy Spirit. Fruits meaning his characteristics and attributes. Galatians 5:22-23 shares with us what those fruits are.

Galatians 5:22-23 King James Version (KJV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Something important to remember, every Follower of Christ has The Holy spirit within them. So every follower of Christ should show and exemplify His fruits. Which arises the question, do YOU exemplify the fruits of The Holy Spirit?

1. Love: This fruit refers to the selfless, God type of love. Unconditional love for all people.
2. Joy: This fruit refers to a type of joy that is not bound by circumstances.
3. Peace: This fruit refers to the inner calm and contentment of knowing a person is in right standing with the Father and has salvation.
4. Longsuffering: Means endurance/perseverance in all situations of life.
5. Gentleness: This involves true and active consideration for others.
6. Goodness: This is a trait that causes someone to have a desire to do what is right.
7. Faith: This refers to an unwavering loyalty to God.
8. Meekness: This refers to showing friendliness and patience to all people.
9. Temperance: This is the discipline of mastering one’s own desires, emotions, and anger.

A Christian should do their best to always exemplify these fruits; so, a lost and dying world can see God through us!

God bless you!

A little about Pastor Konnor McKay

Pastor Konnor McKay is a young man that has lived his whole life in Waldron. However, do not let his age persuade you to think his wisdom is inadequate with his calling in ministry. At twenty-two years old, Pastor Konnor McKay has already made national headlines for standing up for Jesus nationwide! This past summer in July, his name was mentioned in Fox-News Headlines, radio stations, and other news broadcasts for being the Pastor under fire for sharing a great word at a high school football camp with area players from several surrounding schools in June; however, his heart to share the gospel of Jesus Christ has won over hundreds in his hometown of Waldron as he continually shares the gospel and love of Christ with those he comes encountered with.

At the age of fifteen, Pastor Konnor was called into ministry and for the past seven years, he has devoted his life to the ministry through evangelism and the calling of God.  He is licensed with the Arkansas District Pentecostal Church of God.  He is currently one semester away from being an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Church of God, as well.  He is the lead pastor at Waldron Pentecostal Church of God where has served as Pastor for two years.  Pastor Konnor McKay is engaged to Jasmine Manning whom he plans to marry this summer in July.

Waldron Pentecostal Church of God

When we asked Pastor McKay why he felt called into ministry, he replied,”God has placed a TRUE love for people in my heart. I just love people and to think that I have an opportunity to share the gospel with any single person and that might impact their eternal life, is such a wonderful thought. I just want to share hope to hopeless people. I have dedicated my life to see the Devil fail at any attempt of attack he places on the people God loves.”

Service times at Waldron Pentecostal Church of God are Sunday Morning Worship (Ministries for all ages) at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday Evening at 5:00 p.m. They hold a midweek service with ministry for all ages including children and adults at 6:30 p.m.
