Jr Bulldogs Hold Off Lamar Warriors

By Megan Hecox

The 7th-grade Waldron Bulldogs ended up falling to the Lamar Warriors by 3 points in lastnights game but they aren’t going to let this loss deter them. Although the team might not have the highest numbers on their roster, what they do have is lots of potential and will continue to build on the Bulldog legacy. “With the 7th grade, we really try to focus on the fundamentals of the game and try to keep a very simple approach,” says Coach Josh Atchley. “Traditional, here at Waldron, most of the 7th graders we get have never played basketball before and definitely not at a competitive level, so we have to start laying that foundation of the basics of the game.”

The 7th-grade team has seen some struggles this season because of their conference having to travel so far. Coach Atchley explains, “Most teams have elected to play 4 game nights with Jr and Sr High so we have struggled to find 7th-grade games.” The 7th-grade Bulldogs will continue to work on their offensive and defensive skills so that they will be ready for when they return to action on January 12th in Cedarville starting at 9 am.

In the 8th grade game, the Jr Bulldogs left their mark in Lamar with a 3 point victory over the Warriors. “We got a chance to see what our Varsity team might look like next year,” said Coach Atchley. “As a group, we do not have much size but make up for it with our work ethic. Every day is an opportunity to add value and we stress that to our guys. Adding value to the team doesn’t always mean having to score or shoot well. Nathan Settle adds value to our team by being a great teammate. He is always motivating his team and can execute anything I may ask him to do.”

All of the Jr High and Sr High teams will be back on home court January 8 at 4:30 pm when the Charleston Tigers come to town.

Its Hang Time for Jr Hornets

By Megan Hecox

The Trinity Winter Classic is here and the Hackett Jr High Hornets are ready for action. The Tournament will take place January 3-5 with the Hornets playing their first round on January 4. Having played Danville and Lavaca, the 1-1 boys team knows their first round play in the Trinity Winter Classic won’t be a walk in the park. “We are playing against much higher classifications and I got us in this tournament to test our guys and see what we need to do to finish out the year strong,” says Boys Coach Broc Adams. “This group works extremely hard on defense and to this point that has been what sets them apart! We’ve had several games where we struggled offensively but our defense has kept us in games!”

The Lady Hornets are first up in the tournament when they play the Trinity Lady Buffaloes at 4 pm followed by the boys at 5 pm. Then at 6 pm, the Lady Hornets will take on St.Josephs with the boys concluding the night with their 7 pm start time.

Lavaca games vs UCA are cancelled. Up next is the Paris Eagles.

Lavaca High School announced today that the Junior High and Senior High non-conference basketball games against Union Christian Academy, scheduled for tomorrow  January 3rd, have been cancelled.   The Arrows will travel to Paris on Friday, January 4th to take on the Eagles.  Both Junior High teams and both High School teams will be in action.  Junior girls will take the court at 4:00.

This should be another good match up for the Arrows.  The Eagles are always tough especially in Paris.  However, the Golden Arrow basketball programs are all playing very well.  If you want to see some good basketball, make the short drive to Paris Friday night, you won’t be disappointed.

Tigers Plan to Flush Little Johns

By Megan Hecox

With the new year comes new year resolutions and the Mansfield Tigers are an unstoppable combination with high hopes and big dreams. The Jr High and Sr High Tigers will travel to Danville for a non-conference basketball game against the Little Johns on January 3 at 3 pm.

The Jr High Lady Tigers are sitting on a 2-4 conference play record with the Jr High Tigers coming in at 4-2. The Jr Tigers are led by Coach Kent Elmore while the Jr Lady Tigers are coached by Erica McKay. Both teams are ultra talented and hold the perfect recipe for success.

The Sr High Tigers ended their year playing in the Bill Frye Classic. The Sr High Lady Tigers are headed by Coach Joshua Bryan and will start their year with a 0-5 conference play record. The Sr High Tigers who are coached by Keith Dake will pick back up in their season with a conference record of 1-4.

Both Sr High Little John teams are riding high undefeated 4-0. The Tigers aren’t worried about the Little Johns stats though. All good things must come to an end and the Tigers plan to be the unhappy ending to the Little Johns Cinderella season.

It’s Game On For The Waldron Bulldogs

By Megan Hecox

On Wednesday, January 2 the 7th-grade boys, 8th-grade boys, and Sr JV boys will head to Lamar to take on the Warriors in a zero gravity basketball match. The Jr High Warriors are sitting 3-3 in conference play while the Jr High Bulldogs are sitting 2-4.

The Jr High Bulldogs are coming off of a 34-32 nail-biter win against Lincoln from their game on December 21st and are looking to continue to add to their wins column. Although the Jr Dogs are a young inexperienced team, you wouldn’t know it by the way they handle themselves and run the court. Head Coach Josh Atchley says his team is fine-tuning their rotations and getting some great game experience under their belts. “8th graders Lidge Stinson, Trevor Hunt, and Trenton Hunt have all been a big part of what we are trying to accomplish. Camdon Holcomb, Tator Tallmadge, and Drew Owens are quietly leading the team by example. They never miss a day in the gym to add value,” said Coach Atchley.

The Bulldogs are ready to start the New Year off by demolishing a quality team in the Warriors and bring home a victory. And since the Bulldogs roster holds an abundance of talent, that shouldn’t be a problem. Hit the road with the Bulldogs and watch them in action as they take on the Lamar Warriors on January 2 at 4 pm.
