Millard Seeks Office of Mayor

By Tammy Moore Teague
David Millard is seeking the office of Mayor for the City of Waldron. “I believe my background vouches for the fact that I am a proven leader,” stated Millard.
He began his career with the Waldron Police Department in March, 1992. In October of 2015, he was promoted to Chief of Police. One year later, he graduated the Arkansas Leader Program, hosted by the FBI and Criminal Justice Institute. 2008 was a calendar year for Millard as he was elected president of The Arkansas Municipal Police Association, appointed as Police Commissioner on The Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board, and lastly, sat on the Advisory Board of the Criminal Justice Institute.
“I was able to get the officers of Waldron Police Department some of the best training in the nation through the Criminal Justice Institute,” Millard added. Then, in 2009, the certified law enforcement instructor was given two awards from the Arkansas Prevention Network. “These awards were due to my work getting the First Social Host State Law passed in the nation.”
Millard retired from the Waldron PD in 2018. He continues to be involved with the Fire Department. “I’ve been a volunteer fireman for Waldron Fire Department for approximately 18 years. “I am secretary and treasurer and certified pyrotechnician in the fire department. I’m asking for your vote for Mayor of Waldron, Arkansas on November 6, 2018.”

Mansfield Chamber of Commerce Meeting

By Tammy Moore Teague
The members of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce met on Wednesday and discussed several orders of business.
First, the upcoming chili/bean supper, which will be a fundraiser for the upcoming Christmas parade. It is scheduled to take place Saturday, October 20 from 5-7 p.m., at the Mansfield Senior Center. The cost of the meal, plus dessert is $5. Just Us will be performing.
Second on the agenda was the Christmas Parade. A few clubs, such as the tractor and corvette, have expressed concern over the prospect of a night parade. Additionally, the safety and lighting issues that could be problematic. Ultimately, members decided on hosting separate events, the traditional Christmas parade to be held on the first Saturday in December and at another date, the Christmas Tree lighting.
Lastly, members voted on the theme for this year’s parade. It will be “No Place Like Home.” Parade Marshalls are Francie and Alex Cunningham, in honor of longtime Chamber Member, Jim Cunningham.

Lavaca Junior Arrows Roll Up the Wolverines

It has been brought to my attention that we at R22 News missed an important event this past week. I want to apologize to the Lavaca Junior High for not getting an article out about the Junior Arrows big win against Western Yell County on Thursday night, until now.  I do my best to report on as many of our towns sports teams as possible, but I did miss getting this article out in a timely manner.

“Lets Go Arrows!”

The Junior Arrows have had a rough season so far this year. They have played hard but just couldn’t put it all together and get into the winning column, until this week when they faced the Western Yell County Wolverines.
Thursday night the Arrows hit the field, and they were all business. The Junior Arrows completely dominated the evening. Mattocks Noel lead the team with two touchdown runs both being over 30 yards. Cazen Winters also added 2 Touchdowns. The first was on an 8 yard quarterback draw and the second was a 5 yard Touchdown pass to Triston Brown.

Defensively the Arrows were stellar all night. They forced 2 fumbles one ending a Wolverine drive just before halftime. The other, lead to a Lavaca touchdown after Malakai Mendez forced and recovered a fumble on the Wolverine’s 15 yard line.

MMS 7th Grade Students of the Month for September

We would like to take a few minutes and recognize our 7th grade September students of the month.  Teachers nominated a male and female student for their hard work and positive attitude that they have displayed throughout this current school year.  Evan Dominguez has been selected as the 7th grade student of the month for September for many different reasons.  Evan has been chosen by his teachers for his great attitude and winning smile as you can see from our picture.  Carys Desormeaux is the 7th Grade September female student of the month.  Carys continues to work hard every day and sets a good example for all of her peers to follow.
We are extremely proud to have such great students at Mansfield Middle School and we are even more encouraged by the presence their parents are making in their life.  Each student continues to lead their peers by positive examples and we will be saddened by the day these two young people move to the high school.  Congratulations Evan and Carys.

Arrows Spoil Wolverines Homecoming

Here we go.

Lavaca took the opening kick off and returned the ball to The Wolverines 41 yard line. The the first play from scrimmage QB Jimmy Hall dropped back and threw a strike to Mason Walter for 48 yards putting the ball on the 10 yard line. Two plays later Tyler Armistead capped it off with a touchdown run. Extra point was no good and the Arrows took the early lead.

Lavaca’s third possession was set up when Trevon, T-Man, Moore stripped and recovered the ball. Hall hit Colby Clunn for two catches and Tyler Armistead had several nice runs to put the ball in the end zone once again. Lavaca went for two with some trickery. Mason Walter on an end around pulled up and threw the ball to Colby Clunn for the 2 point conversion, extending the lead to 14 -0.
Arrows scored one more time on a play action pass from Hall to Walters. To bring the score to 21-0. That was the final score for the game.

Road Repair Underway at Hartford Memorial Park

By Tammy Moore Teague

The road through Hartford Memorial Park Cemetery has been in disrepair following heavy rains throughout the spring and summer. Recently. Alan Holt with Holt Excavation began working to repair it.

However, limited funds are slowing that progress. If you would like to donate to the cemetery and help fund this effort, you can go by any Farmers Bank location.

“Progress is going on,” stated cemetery official, Nelda Frye. Adding that, “progress is not cheap.”
