The Lavaca Golden Arrows will be traveling to Western Yell Country to take on the Wolverines. On paper this looks to be a lop-sided match up. Lavaca is averaging 267.2 yards per game while Western Yell is only averaging 119.3. Although, The Arrows are doing anything but looking past the Wolverines. Lavaca was handed its first and only conference loss last week in a bruising battle with Mountainburg. Even though conference play has just began, this game has the feel of a must win. It’s going to be a tight race to the playoffs and Lavaca needs to win in order to keep pace.
Lavaca Head Football Coach Bryan Schlinker said “we have to play assignment football. They run a lot of option, so we all have to do our jobs. We need to play with the same physicality and heart that we did last week. That is the only way we will be successful.” Last weeks game with Mountainburg was a brutal game with big hits from big players, yet Lavaca never quit. They will need to keep the same intensity this Friday.
Other than winning for the purpose of winning, there is another added element to Friday’s game. Coach Chris Morphis is the new Head Football Coach at Western Yell. Last year coach Morphis was the defensive coordinator at Lavaca. I asked Coach Schlinker how much, if any, pressure or motivation playing the former Lavaca coach added. “Anytime you play a former coach, kids will be amped up. We are really trying to focus on the fact that our focus should be on beating Western Yell, not the coach.” Coach Schlinker said. Although, there is no doubt that this element creates an anticipation and a little extra motivation. This should be a fun match up to watch. So Friday night plan to take a little road trip and support this Arrow Team!

Arkansas Property Tax Deadline

The statewide property tax deadline is October 15, 2018.
In Scott County, to pay in person you must come in by 4:30 p.m., which is when the office closes. The office is located at 190 West 1st Street Waldron, AR 72958. As of Friday, Scott County residents can now pay their taxes online at taxpayment.countyservice.net
In Sebastian County, you have several options. You can go by one of the three office locations, the Greenwood Courthouse, the Fort Smith Courthouse or the location at 6515 Pheonix Ave., Fort Smith, AR 72901. You can also go online to either gov2go.com or taxpayment.countyservice.net
The Sebastian County Collectors office also added that property owners can mail their payments to P.O. Box 1358 Fort Smith, AR 72902 or pay by phone. Payments mailed in, must be postmarked by October 15.
The deadline for accepting online tax payments in both counties is 11:59 p.m., October 15. Be sure to pay before then to avoid late penalties.
American Pickers to Film in Arkansas

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Arkansas! They plan to film episodes of the hit series American Pickers throughout our area in December.
American Pickers is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique “picking” on History. The hit show follows Wolfe and Fritz, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.
As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Wolfe and Fritz are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the Pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. The pair hopes to give historically significant objects a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about America’s past along the way. Wolfe and Fritz have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they’ve never seen before.
They are ready to find extraordinary items and hear fascinating tales about them. American Pickers is looking for leads and would love to explore your hidden treasure. Lady Arrows Hand Hackett First Conference Loss

There was a large crowd for the Lavaca vs Hackett Senior High Volleyball match Tuesday night, October 2nd. This was a much anticipated match up. Lavaca’s only conference loss had come at the hands of Hackett who came into this match undefeated in conference. The atmosphere was electric and it was apparent that Lavaca was on a mission.
The first set was a back and forth slug fest but in the end it went to Hackett 27 to 25. The Arrows battled back dominating the second and third sets winning both by the same score of 25-16. Hackett came back and took the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth and final set. Lavaca took the rubber match 15-11 to end Hackett’s quest for an undefeated season.
This match was everything you hope for in a high school competition. Both teams stood toe to toe and traded points like punches from two prize fighter. Coach Mark Headley was very pleased with the win and had this to say, “It was a total team effort! I thought the girls played with unbelievable passion tonight and played together as well as they have all year!” One thing is for certain, the Lavaca vs Hackett match number 3 at the District Tournament should be one for the books!

Lavaca Homecoming

Calling all Lavaca Alumni! Next week, October 8-12, is homecoming and you are being summoned to come home, fill the stands, and cheer on your Golden Arrows as they take on the Magazine Rattlers. The court has been set, activities planned, and dress up days established. Alumni please plan on joining with your fellow Alums in the festivities.
Homecoming events have become woven into the very fabric of America. The first “Homecoming” is highly contested. The Alumni for Harvard and Yale have been invited to attend their annual game dating back as far as the 1870’s, but it wasn’t until 1910 that three colleges, Baylor University , University of Missouri, and the University of Illinois, planned their “Coming Home” events that most closely resembles what we have today. By 1920 virtually every university across the country was hosting a “Homecoming”. High Schools quickly adopted the practice to bring school spirt and pride in the community.
This years Homecoming court is: Sophomore Maids, Ireland Green and Ali Simpson– Junior Maids, Sierra Lamb and Makensi Jeffcoat- Senior Maids, Avery Green, Beth Ann May, and Adeline Newhart, one of whom will be crowned as Homecoming Queen 2018 at 6:30 Friday evening October 12th at the football field.
The week leading up to Homecoming is known as Spirit Week. The Student body will dress up in theme each day of the week. The themes for spirit week are: Monday: Mismatch Day, Tuesday: Country Day, Wednesday: Fake an Injury Day, Thursday: Vine/Meme Day, and Friday: Purple and Gold Day. Should be fun to see what creative costumes these kids come up with.
There will be a Homecoming Parade at 2:15 on Friday followed by the Daytime Ceremonies and Pep Rally At 2:40. The Crowning Ceremony will be at 6:30 followed by the game.

American Pickers to Film in Arkansas

Lavaca Fall Clean up
Next week, October 8th through 12th is the Fall Clean Up week for residents of Lavaca City Limits. The ABC Center will be open daily from 10AM – 6PM so you can dispose of your junk at no charge. You must provide a Lavaca Water bill in your name showing a sanitation charge for this event. Items not being accepted are as follows: tires, roofing materials, household waste, burn barrels and yard waste. If you have any questions please give us a call at 479-674-5616.
Cancer Survivor Receives Suprise Honor

Cancer survivor, Daxton McBride, went to the Hackett volleyball game last night to support one of the players. What he didn’t know was, the game was a ”Pink Out”, and that he was one of the guests of honor!
”We got the unexpected blessing of getting to let Daxton take part in being honored as a cancer survivor,” stated Daxton’s mother, Misty McBride. “A lot of the people there today were also there 12 years ago supporting Daxton and the rest of our family as we went through the toughest journey of our life. We had many prayer warriors in our corner and we had family and friends available at all times. Lots of very tough memories that bring tears to my eyes when I think on them, but more importantly, God allowed us to have a testimony to glorify Him and I share it daily. I’m thankful for a community that believes in prayer and that loves our kids.”
McBride has such a sweet spirit. His smile is contagious to those he meets! Even more inspiring, is the obstacles he’s faced and overcome. Besides having Downs Syndrome, McBride had brain and spine cancer. “The initial tumor was a large one on the cerebellum of his brain. That’s where your balance and coordination comes from,” explained Misty McBride. “They removed it and then five weeks later they discovered it had blasted all over his brain and spine. Too many tumors to even count. Daxton went through 32 rounds of radiation. They radiated 360 degrees of his body. The only thing not radiated were his legs.”
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. His mother stated “After he finished his radiation on a Thursday, they rescanned and said all tumors were still there, but had not grown. We were starting chemo on Monday. On Sunday, the Lord led us to take him to the front (of the church) and have him anointed and prayed over. We did just that and we got a bigger blessing than we ever really expected. The Lord chose to heal Daxton immediately of his tumors. Every single one was gone, where they had been there only three days prior.”
The doctors were unable to accept that the healing had taken place through divine intervention and insisted McBride continue treatment. For two long years this young man endured treatments that nearly killed him. “Even through that trial the Lord was faithful and blessed us in our time of need,” his mother added.
Misty McBride said just prior to her son’s healing, they had encountered what she believed was an Angel. “It was before Daxton was even prayed over and he had to be pushed in a wheelchair, he was so weak. We were at the hospital getting his blood checked. He was so sick that particular day. In fact, he had to be airlifted from Fort Smith to Little Rock. An old lady, kind of grungy looking, was pushing a cart on the sidewalk just outside the hospital and she stopped me. She said ‘can I pray with you?’ I said sure, and she reached for my hand. She prayed, then when she finished, she said ‘God wants me to tell you that you’re son is gonna be just fine and He wants you to hang on to that!’ I burst into tears and she hugged me, then began walking away. I literally took two steps and turned to wave and tell her thank you and goodbye, but when I turned back she wasn’t anywhere to be found. There was absolutely no place for her to go either, she simply disappeared. I know she was an angel sent by God Himself.”
The family remains strong in their faith and are such an example to others. Daxton McBride, is himself, such an inspiration! I believe his mother said it best, “he’s a well loved young man!” And that, he is!
Lady Arrows travel to Booneville

The Lavaca Lady Arrows Volleyball teams started a very busy week off by traveling to Booneville Monday night. All of the Lady Arrows from 7th grade to High School took the court. The 7th grade started the night off and played to a one game a piece tie. The Junior High B team (8th grade), won their match in straight sets. The Junior High A team (9th grade) won their first game but Booneville battled back in the second to force a third. The Lady Arrows proved to be up to the task and took the rubber match.
The feature match up was the High School match. The Lady Arrows won the first set in a close one 25-23. Booneville answered back winning the second set 25-19. The Lady Arrows dominated the third set 25-14. Again, the Lady Bearcats fought back in the forth set winning 25-22 forcing the rubber match game. In the fifth and final set of the match the Bearcats captured an early lead 6-0. Lavaca’s coach, Mark Headley, called time out and the Lady Arrows regained their composure. From that point it was a battle, but little by little Lavaca climbed back in and eventually tied the set at 14. Booneville got the side out and won on the next serve when a Lavaca kill shot was just out of play. Final Score 16-14.
All of the Lady Arrows teams played well in this non conference match up. Next up for these ladies is highly anticipated conference match with Hackett’s Lady Hornets tonight, October 2nd in Hackett, games start at 4:00. Lavaca’s only conference loss this year was at the hands of the Lady Hornets and the Lady Arrows would like nothing more than to return the favor. The match has implications for the number one seed going into the district tournament. This is a match up that you will not want to miss!
