MMS 7th Grade Students of the Month – January

The Mansfield Middle School has been tremendously blessed with outstanding leaders of tomorrow.  Instead of presenting a group of students of the month, we will attempt to select two students each week from different grades to highlight their abilities and educational success.
7th Grade students of the month for January are Trenton Leroy & Bethany Sartin. Both students were nominated by their teachers for outstanding qualities they display by being positive leaders and helpful students and peers.
Bethany and Trenton have transitioned well from 6th to 7th grade.  Trenton was nominated for his hard work and dedication in the classroom as well as his leadership projected throughout the day.  Bethany has been a persistent worker, with a quiet demeanor.  Chloe and the young man continue working hard in each and every class and are working at impacting others that are around them.  We hope that both students continue to grow and work on being positive students and leaders at Mansfield Middle School.

James Honored as Teacher of the Year

Wendy James, a Mansfield School District alumni, and current Hartford 5th/6th grade teacher, was recently chosen as the Arkansas Smart Maher Teacher of the Year.
James stated, “I won District 7 VFW, then went on to win the teacher of the year for the elementary division for the State of Arkansas, which focused on excellence in teaching citizenship, and patriotism in school.”
Referencing above image, James traveled to Little Rock on February 3, 2018 where she accepted the prestigious award, along with a cash prize, and a YETI tumbler with “Teacher of the Year” engraved on its side.

Lady Tigers Play with Pride and Focus

The Mansfield Lady Tigers competed against Booneville at home on Monday January 29th for their final home game of the season.
The Lady Tigers were down one of the team’s leading rebounder’s in Hailey Walker, so Coach Bryan challenged his girls to step up in her absence; and they delivered.
The Lady Tigers turned in one of their best performances of the season. Freshman Danielle Lillie and Mikayla Harrison both picked up their season first double-double to lead the team to victory against the Lady Bearcats. Danielle earned 13 points and 13 rebounds and Mikayla earned 11 points and 13 rebounds. Sadie Roberts earned 10 points and 7th grader Skylynn Harris earned 1 point in the game for their 35-28 win.
“The girls played to the expectation I have set for them this season”, said Coach Bryan. “Our team leaders stepped up today in scoring and rebounding and a couple earning their first double-double of their careers. I don’t suspect this will be the last time they have games like this one.”
Another outstanding performance was 8th grader Sadie Roberts; she also turned in a season high in scoring and led the team in steals.  It was a good way to end our final home game this season.

The Lady Tigers went on the road to Charleston for their final game of the season on Thursday February 1st.
They struggled early in the game and could never overcome their first half issues. Mikayla Harrison shot well tonight making 13 points including going perfect three-for-three on 3-pointers.
“We were our own worst enemies today”, said Coach Bryan. “We turned the ball over 30 times resulting in some easy points for Charleston as we trailed 9-24 at halftime. After our halftime adjustments we stopped the bleeding but Charleston did well to hold us off from gaining any momentum to get us back in the ball game.”
The Lady Tigers will travel to Cedarville to compete against Greenland in the Junior High District Tournament Monday February 5th at 4:00pm. If they win, they’ll play Wednesday.
Come out and support the Lady Tigers in their District Tournament! GO TIGERS!

Black Accepts Mansfield City Council Appointment

The abrupt resignation of Nathan Sterling left a vacancy on the Mansfield City Council. Last week, Buddy Black of Mansfield was nominated, and the council unanimously voted for him to fill that position.
After Black was asked about his recent nomination, he stated “I believe I can do something to help the city. I want to at a minimum serve as a vehicle to mend and heal our city’s problems.”
During the last several months, Mansfield City Council meetings have seen record turn outs in response to multiple issues within the governing powers.
Black has been present at a vast majority of the recent meetings as a citizen, and is aware of the major issues that both the City, and Council are facing. But, he wants to do what is right for the future of the town and it’s people. That starts with serving his community on a higher level.

With Black being on the Mansfield planning & zoning commissions for 20 years, a 1969 MHS Graduate, and a man with great passion for his hometown, the community feels his presence will be an asset to the board, and the current issues.
“We need to first, and foremost put all these issues behind us, and move quickly in a positive direction. The people want this, and deserve to have this done immediately” added Black.
Honor, transparency and hard work is a motto Black shared with us when speaking about his upbringing. The community of Mansfield residents know Black to have a good heart, and a great understanding of family values among many other honorable traits.
Resident Press extends our gratitude to Mr. Buddy Black for serving on the Mansfield City Council.
