Firefighters, emergency responders and public safety personnel from across Sebastian County gathered Saturday, Sept. 26, for the 2026 Emergency Services Appreciation and Recognition Banquet.
The event, presented by the Sebastian County Fire Association, was held at the Student Union Building at Greenwood High School. The evening provided an opportunity to recognize those who have dedicated years — and in some cases decades — to serving their communities through fire, emergency medical and other public safety services.
Circuit Judge Stephen Tabor served as the featured speaker. Tabor, a lifelong Sebastian County resident, has spent much of his career in public service. He previously served as a Sebastian County deputy prosecuting attorney and prosecuting attorney before being appointed circuit judge in 2008. He was elected to a six-year term in 2014 and reelected in 2020. He also presides over criminal cases and Sebastian County Drug Court.
The evening began with an invitation to stand for the posting of the colors, followed by an opening prayer led by Pastor Todd Rhamy. Gary Lawrence led the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.
Following dinner, guest speaker Tabor addressed those in attendance before a special video message was presented to Sebastian County emergency responders.
A significant portion of the evening was devoted to recognizing years of service. Mark Allen presented acknowledgements for volunteers with service ranging from less than five years to more than 30 years, highlighting the many years responders have collectively devoted to their departments and communities.
Individual awards were also presented by fire departments and other agencies.
Among the honors were the Sebastian County Youth Preparedness Volunteer of the Year; Sebastian County Search and Rescue Volunteer of the Year; Sebastian County Volunteer First Responder of the Year; Sebastian County Paramedic of the Year; Sebastian County Volunteer Firefighter of the Year; and Sebastian County Fire Chief of the Year, presented by Sizemore and Judge Hotz.
The program also included recognition of retiring personnel before concluding with the retiring of the colors.
The banquet served not only as an awards ceremony, but as an opportunity to recognize the often unseen commitment of the men and women who answer emergency calls throughout Sebastian County. Whether serving for a few years or several decades, those honored represent the network of volunteers and professionals who respond when their neighbors need them most.
