The Mansfield JR Tigers have made unpredictability their calling card in 2026. One week, they’ll steamroll an opponent, the next, they’ll survive a down-to-the-wire battle by the narrowest of margins. Fans may be growing accustomed to Mansfield’s weekly roller-coaster ride, but every trip has ended at the same destination: the win column. On Thursday, October 1, the JR Tigers extended their unbeaten start to 5-0 and pushed the program’s winning streak to 15 consecutive games, overwhelming Cedarville in a commanding 48-0 shutout.

Cedarville opened the game on offense and immediately attacked Mansfield’s biggest disadvantage, size. The Pirates ripped off an 11-yard gain on their first snap, but that would be their only positive play of the drive. Mansfield’s defense quickly slammed the door shut on the next three plays, forcing Cedarville to punt. The Tigers offense took over and showed that they had plenty of big-play firepower of their own. On Mansfield’s first offensive snap, quarterback Elijah Burton kept the ball and outran the rain for a jaw-dropping 90-yard touchdown. Josh Bascue powered across the goal line for the two-point conversion, giving the Tigers an early 8-0 lead over the Pirates.

Back-to-back penalties sent Cedarville reeling on its next possession, and Mansfield’s defense wasted no time turning up the pressure. Gabe Haysmer, Hayden Moore, and Daymian Powell dropped a defensive anchor on the Pirates to force Cedarville to punt again. Keaton Welch then sparked the Tigers’ offense with a nine-yard gain to open the ensuing series. A bobbled pitch on the next snap nearly handed Cedarville the break it needed, but Mansfield not only recovered, but they also still managed to gain yards on the loose ball. Two plays later, Welch powered his way into the end zone for another Tiger touchdown. Ryder Pennington punched in the two-point conversion, sending Mansfield into the second quarter with a commanding 16-0 lead.

The Tigers defense started the second quarter with Cedarville facing third down and a mile to go. Keaton Welch got into the backfield and extended that distance to a mile and a half by sacking the Pirates quarterback. Cedarville’s punt put the Tigers offense at the 43-yard line which kept Mansfield on their side of the field, , but neither the distance nor the field position mattered to Welch. Welch was determined to leave the Pirates with a whale of a tale and boy did he ever do that. On the very next snap of the ball, Welch swallowed up all 43-yards and put another Tiger touchdown on the scoreboard. Ryder Pennington put up the extra two-points again to extend Mansfield’s lead to 24-0. Again, the Tigers defense plugged the barrel of Cedarville’s offensive cannon to force a fourth down punt, but this time, the ball sailed over the punters head which created a turnover on downs.

The turnover handed Mansfield’s offense the ball just 20 yards from the end zone and two plays later, Keaton Welch found pay dirt yet again. Josh Bascue powered in the two-point conversion, pushing the Tigers’ commanding lead to 32-0. Cedarville continued to battle against not only Mansfield’s defense, but a relentless combination of high snaps, driving rain, and costly penalties. For a brief moment though, Cedarville appeared to finally have set sail against the Mansfield defense, but Josh Bascue ripped the ball free allowing Elijah Burton to scoop up the mud-covered pigskin and go 28 yards to the house for another Tigers touchdown. Bascue added the two-point conversion, sending Mansfield into halftime with a lopsided 40-0 advantage over Cedarville.

With the mercy rule in effect, Mansfield turned to its reserves to close out the second half and the Tigers never missed a beat from there. Despite a few miscues, the offense showcased the depth of the roster, keeping Cedarville’s defense off balance while methodically chewing up the entire third quarter. The backup unit was equally impressive on the defensive side, preserving the shutout and adding points of its own when Zander Snow scooped up a loose ball and raced 45 yards for a touchdown. From start to finish, Mansfield’s junior high squad looked like a fleet of battleships, overwhelming Cedarville on the way to a dominant 48-0 victory.

Mansfield’s JR High is now 2-0 in conference play and has outscored their opponents with an astounding 86-0 points. According to head coach Trevon Moore, the key for this kind of success isn’t just one of two players, it’s the true definition of working as a team. “Quarterback, Elijah Burton, gets a lot of well-deserved spotlight for what he does, but what really makes this team dangerous is we have a whole group of guys stepping up and embracing their roles. It can be tough in an offense where several players have the talent to be “the guy” on any given night, but their unselfishness is our biggest strength. Defenses can’t just key in on one person”. Even with a pure team mentality, the Tigers have been outsized by their opponents in every game this season. While that may intimidate many teams, the Tigers don’t see size of those across the line from them as a disadvantage for them. “It comes down to sheer physicality and heart” said coach Moore. “Our kids play with a motor that doesn’t quit. They buy into finishing every single snap from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. When you bring that level of intensity to both sides of the ball, it makes up for any gap in raw size or talent”. The Tigers will look to keep their high horsepowered motor running smoothly next week as then travel to Paris on Thursday, October 8th.
