There is nothing like the hype of a Conference Championship game. Two teams who are vying to be the best of the best in their area going at each other is something to behold. But sometimes fans get a real treat. That treat comes as the conference Championship is being played by a historic conference powerhouse and an up incoming program that is beginning to make a name for itself. The Charleston Tigers have a long history of conference dominance by racking up 29 gold total plaques while the Mansfield Tigers held a mere three. Two of Mansfield’s three titles though came in the past two years proving that the Tigers are more than up incoming, they’re already here.

Both Mansfield and Charleston opened the season by walking straight into the teeth of the toughest non-conference schedules in the entire state. When the dust settled, Mansfield crawled awa with a 2-2 record and Charleston limped out at 1-3. The doubters didn’t waste any time as fans across the region were ready to write off both teams before the leaves even started to turn. But here’s the thing, that gauntlet was never an accident. It was the master plan all along. Play the toughest teams, and you’re ready for the toughest teams. Once conference play kicked off, the payoff was undeniable. Both squads lit up scoreboards across 3A-1, steamrolling opponents week after week on the way to unblemished league records. Now it all came down to one night. On October 30th in Charleston, two battle-tested Tiger titans collided with the Conference Championship on the line and they did not disappoint.

Charleston won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, sending Mansfield’s offense out to take the first shot. After a three-week absence, the Tigers had their trigger man back quarterback as Jubal Parks returned to the huddle, giving Mansfield’s high-powered attack a big jolt of energy. Charleston’s defense answered the bell early, holding firm through Mansfield’s first four snaps and giving up only a couple of yards a carry on a Tiger offense known for its ground-and-pound running game. Then Silas Burton made Charleston pay for stacking the box. Burton found a gap, broke into the clear, and was gone racing 63 yards to the end zone for the game’s first touchdown. The two-point try came up short, but Mansfield had struck first, taking a 6-0 lead with 9:22 left in the first quarter.

Charleston’s offense came out swinging, crossing midfield in just two plays of their opening possession. Then Jeramiah Burton changed everything. On the fourth snap of the drive, Burton came screaming in untouched and laid a bone-rattling hit on Charleston’s quarterback, jarring the ball loose allowing Mansfield to pounce on it at the 48-yard line. But the Tigers offense quickly found themselves backed up. A mix of stout Charleston defense and costly flags left Mansfield facing a third down with 32-yards to go. Jubal Parks was able to ripped off 24-yards on a single play to set up fourth and eight yards to go. Charleston then jumped offside and handed the Tigers five free yards, making it fourth and three.

Could Mansfield convert on the critical down? Not only did they convert, they took it all the way to the house. Silas Burton slipped and slid his way through the Charleston defense once again, breaking loose for a 41-yard Tiger touchdown. The two-point try fell short, but Mansfield led 12-0. Charleston refused to fold. The Tigers from Charleston answered with a 58-yard strike through the air to set up shop in the red zone. Mansfield’s defense dug in and forced a fourth-and-goal, but Charleston punched it in. Charleston went for two and came up empty, and the first quarter ended with Mansfield on top, 12-6.

After a wild first quarter, the second quarter opened with a thud for Mansfield. Charleston’s defense stuffed the Tigers early and forced a punt, handing Charleston’s offense the ball at the 41-yard line. Eight plays later, Charleston was knocking on the end zone door once again. Cameron Jones and Seth Burton led a stubborn Tiger defense that fought for every inch, but Charleston kept grinding all the way down to the three-yard line. Then disaster struck for the black and white Tigers. A bad snap sent the ball bouncing across the turf, and Michael Carter was right there to pounce on it. Just like that, the threat was over. But Mansfield’s offense now had 97 yards of real estate in front of them. Charleston’s hard-nosed defense and a string of costly penalties made the Tigers earn every yard, but Silas Burton found a crease yet again and darted into the end zone for another Mansfield touchdown. The two-point try came up empty once more, but the lead grew to 18-6 with 3:57 left in the half.

Charleston tried to answer right back, but the Mansfield defense slammed the door shut and sent the Tigers offense back onto the field. With every Charleston defender keying on Silas Burton, Jeramiah Burton and Colton Moore found themselves in open space. The duo ran free to find their way down to the one-yard line. Jubal Parks finished the job from there to earn a Tiger touchdown. The extra-point woes continued, but Mansfield had built a commanding 24-6 lead. But don’t forget who was standing across the field. This is the Charleston Tigers. On senior night. At home. Count them out and they make you pay. The Tiger defense blinked twice, and just like that, Charleston was in the end zone with 0:13 left in the half. Charleston tacked on the two-point conversion to trim the deficit to 24-14. Then came the gamble. Charleston went for the onside kick, and the black and white Tigers came up with it. Suddenly the momentum was swinging in Charleston’s favor. Luckily for Mansfield, Layton Pyles had other plans. Pyles jumped a passing route, picked off the pass, and floored the brakes on the comeback to send Mansfield into the locker room with a 24-14 lead.

Mansfield held the lead at the break, but the Tigers had cleaning up to do. The Tigers piled up 12 penalties in the first half alone, more than that had in any full game all season. Charleston had their costly mistakes too by chalking up three turnovers and four penalties. Charleston came out of the locker room swinging, ripping off a 63-yard run on the first snap of the third quarter. Two plays later, they were knocking at the 3-yard line, but once again the red zone turned into a nightmare as another Charleston turnover killed the drive. That left Mansfield staring at 97 yards of turf for the second time on the same night. Jeramiah Burton and Colton Moore took turns pounding the rock to push across midfield, and on fourth-and-4, freshman Elijah Burton delivered to move the chains. The spark didn’t last, though. Charleston’s defense bowed up and forced a punt, then bled out the rest of the quarter with the scoreboard still reading 24-14.

Fifteen minutes. That’s all that stood between these two Tigers and a conference crown. Each of Mansfield and Charleston’s previous three meetings had come down to a single score, and with the way this nail-biter was unfolding, it was shaping up to be four in a row. Charleston wasted no time turning up the heat. The black and white Tigers opened the final quarter by launching a 36-yard strike downfield to set up shop at the 30-yard line. One play later, they were strolling into the end zone. The extra point split the uprights, and just like that, it was, you guessed it, a 24-21 one-score game. Mansfield needed an answer, and fast. Facing fourth down, Jubal Parks heaved a Hail Mary and found Isaac Carson, who hauled it in for not just a first down but a trip all the way to the two-yard line. From there, Silas Burton walked it in for another Tiger touchdown, pushing Mansfield’s lead to 30-21 with 5:08 left in the game.

Big games call for big-time players to make big-time plays. Usually that comes from the senior leaders, but on Charleston’s next possession, it was a freshman who stole the spotlight. Elijah Burton telegraphed Charleston pass all the way, jumped the route, and took it 62 yards to the house for a pick-six. Seth Burton then hauled in a two-point conversion pass, giving Mansfield its first successful try for bonus points all night and stretching the lead to 38-21. But when you’re playing Charleston, it’s never over until the clock hits 0:00. The black and white Tigers refused to go quietly, firing a touchdown pass to pull back within two scores. The Tigers would not be denied their crown though as Mansfield took the ball on the ensuing possession and never gave it back, grinding out the clock to seal a 38-28 victory and claim their third straight 3A-1 Conference Championship.

This one was billed as the game of the week, and it lived up to every bit of the hype. Two packed sets of stands brought a college-like atmosphere. Two great teams left it all on the field. Wild twists and turns kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Mansfield walked away with the win, but both programs put on a show worthy of a championship. “I’m super proud of our guys tonight,” said Coach Overton. “Those guys battled and had to overcome a lot of adversity. They just kept fighting and personified a next play mentality”. The mental mistakes and penalties were a blemish for Mansfield, but the Tigers will have a bye week to clean those up before entering the playoffs as a 1Seed. The biggest key, though, is being 100% when the playoffs arrive, and Coach Overton zeroed in on that when asked about the top priority for the upcoming bye week. “We need to get healthy, that’s the biggest thing”. The Tigers third consecutive 3A-1 Championship definitely wasn’t handed to them. Surviving roadblocks like injuries, non-conference losses, close games, and a season-ending thriller against Charleston proved one thing: Mansfield will be a tough out in the 2026 3A State Playoffs.
