Last week, there was a strong aroma in the air. That smell, was Friday Night Football!
What better way to start out the season than with the Battle of Scott County, also known as the Battle of Highway 71.
Kickoff began at 7:00pm with team pride on both sides of the field appropriately dressed in Red/White/Black, and Orange/Black or a combination of them all supporting family members, neighbors, friends, and our hometown team.
The Mansfield Tigers fell behind in the first half with the Waldron Bulldiogs going into halftime with a 21-6 lead. The second half was an all out battle where time may have been the best ally for the Bulldogs.

Orchestrating a comeback, the Tigers ended the 3rd quarter still behind the Bulldogs with a score of 35-14. This battle was a test for not only the coaches, but for the teams on both sides of the ball. But, the Tigers were not giving up, and closing the gap.
The 4th quarter seen plenty of heroic acts on both sides of ball, but time ultimately decided the end result with Waldron winning with a score of 35-28.
Mansfield Head Coach, Craig Bentley stated “Really proud of our guys and the fight they showed Friday night. We got behind early in he first quarter and coming out of half, but we never quit. We were able to fight back into it and give ourselves a chance to tie the ball game in the end. Sometimes you just run out of time. We fix the mistakes we made early defensively and get more consistent on offense and we have a chance to keep growing as the season goes on.”
We would like to wish the Mansfield Tigers, Coaches, Cheer Squads, Band, and families, a safe and successful season. GO TIGERS!

Waldrons Wins Second “Battle of 71”
???? Sandy Tull & Jason Baggett | Article by Konnor McKay
It’s hard to forget the big game one year ago close to this date when Waldron’s football program took a huge turn for the better. For the first time in at least a decade Waldron defeated Mansfield for the second consecutive year. On the first two plays of offense for the bulldogs, two touchdowns were scored by Waldron’s Levi Hayden, and Trey Williams. Waldron quickly jumped out to a 14-0 lead just three minutes into the game. However Mansfield wasn’t done. After a few adjustments, and penalties Mansfield out their firs score on the board last in the first quarter. Making the score 14-6. Levi Franklin however also added to the scoring in the first quarter with Levi Franklin’s late quarter touchdown with just 4:00 minutes left in the quarter making the score 21-6.
The second quarter was quiet, and a lot of defense was present from both sides of the ball. Several penalties hurt both the bulldogs, and the tigers. However one drive stands out for the bulldogs. With just 5:00 minutes left in the quarter Mansfield puts together a drive of small drive making it inside the Waldron 5 Yard line. However on a huge fourth down play Waldron’s Levi Franklin steps up big for the bulldog defense and makes a tackle about the one yard line and the tigers fail to convert.

The third quarter Waldron comes out ready to score. Getting the ball to begin the half, Trey Williams just began to really put on a show. After two huge first downs from Williams and 1 first down from Cole Huddleston Williams puts in another score for the bulldogs making the score 28-6. Let’s not forget the 5 extra points Williams also converted as Waldron’s PAT (point after touchdown) kicker. This game was his first game to ever attempt kicking field goals in a game. Mansfield wasn’t done though. They answer quickly with a score from QB Matt Stovall with 7:26 left in the quarter Mansfield makes the score 28-14. Near the end of the quarter after another big drive coming from Williams, Mason Ford adds another touchdown making the score 35-14. Waldron’s Jarrod Starr comes up with a devastating hit late just before a pass is intercepted by Levi Franklin.
The fourth quarter is where things get a little interesting. Of course, when it’s a rival game, things normally do. Waldron’s sideline was hit with a plague of leg cramps. Several men who had played hard all evening long, began to run out of muscle juice. Mansfield managed to hold Waldron to no scoring in the fourth, and put up 2 touchdowns making the score 35-28. However it was too little, too late for the tigers. Waldron ultimately walks away with a victory over the tigers. Waldron starts the season 1-0. This coming week will be homecoming as Waldron hosts the Cedarville pirates at bulldog stadium Friday at 7 p.m.

We would like to wish the Waldron Bulldogs, Coaches, Cheer Squads, Band, and families, a safe and successful season. GO DOGS!
Hornets STING the Indians

The Hackett Hornets have proven their town supports them with great tradition, and pride, but the team itself play with goals, and passion under their coaching staff.
Last Friday night, the Pocola Indians rolled into town with an opportunity to swat the Hornets. That didn’t happen. In fact, it wasn’t even close.

“We came out a little slow in our first Defensive series (bent but didn’t break). But after that, we played like we know we are capable of playing. We played well as a team, and hope that gives us momentum going into this week’s tough conference game against Mountainburg on their field.” – Hackett Head Coach, Lonnie Hester

2017 Soccer Officers Elected
Article by Ali Bryant, Resident Press Contributor
With Mansfield Soccer founders, Jason, and Lesli Baggett stepping down from Mansfield Soccer to focus on bringing the sport into the Mansfield School District, it was unclear whether Mansfield Soccer would find new officer’s before season began.
In a meeting held August 29, 2017 at the Mansfield Ball Fields, Rich Patterson was elected President, Bo Patterson was elected Vice-President, and Amanda Wilson was elected Secretary.
Baggett stated, “This is the dream team to continue what we’ve created and take Mansfield Soccer in a new direction, under new leadership. Rich’s heart is focused on these kids, and continuing a winning tradition of Mansfield Soccer. Bo has refereed our games, and coached several years. He’s a perfect fit. Amanda has a heart for community, and with her previous experience in the Mansfield Ball Assoc., she’ll be a valued asset.”
Fall 2017 Soccer registrations begin tonight, 6-7pm at the Gazebo in Mansfield City Square.
Hometown “Pride”
By Jason Baggett
There was a day when the city streets, and the windows of businesses were adorned with paint and colorful words. I remember it, plainly. “Go team Go!” or “Beat This Team!” It was a beautiful sight.
This is one thing you can’t blame social media for. In fact, we as society are to blame. Can we blame laziness, or the idea that’s “how it used to be” would be the perfect escape goat.
The simple fix is this… Hometown Pride starts with the people, the community, and the businesses. It’s that easy.
You can’t build a tradition if you’re waiting for someone else to do it. NO! YOU, have to start it somewhere, somehow.
If you look at the schools, and towns that WIN, they have a solid tradition or foundation of support that combines members of the community, and the businesses. They work in unison, for one cause…… PRIDE.
It’s NOT a money thing.
Imagine this, if you will. All sports, clubs, and associations play a vital role in the economy, and community involvement. Think about the mental warfare it would have on our opponents if the streets were adorned with “hometown pride,” and if the stands were full when the opposing team walks out. Or, when our fan base rolls into their town as a large assembly of unified support. It would make a difference.
What if the audience was standing room only at a play, or band recital?
Are we too busy to support the town that we want to prosper?
