Dobbs Exemplifies Community

Article , and photos by Erica Hodges
As the 2016-2017 school year winded down for Hackett, a familiar face is already looking forward to next year.
This person can be found every morning, and afternoon, rain or shine, near Hackett Elementary ensuring that parents, and children utilize the crosswalk safely, and watches for motorists who are dropping off kids. His name is Al Dobbs.
Referencing the above image, Dobbs poses with Remington Hodges as we keep a close eye on the traffic, and the kids going to school.
He’s not employed by Hackett School District, or the City of Hackett. He does it on his own time, and for no payment.
Mr. Dobbs will be 82 next month. He is retired from coal mining, and a retired custodian from the Ft. Smith School District. He lives in Hackett with his wife Cheryl.

Mr. Dobbs was honored with a plaque for his service, and a gift card during Hackett awards ceremony last Friday.

Thank you, Mr. Dobbs for putting the safety of our children first, and foremost and for donating your time. We’ll see you in August, at the crosswalk.

Jaden James Scores Winning Touchdown

Story by Jason Baggett, Owner/Editor – Resident Press
As the Senior High football team took the field last night preparing for their Spring scrimmage at Mansfield High School, there stood a 14 year-old boy with a heart of gold, that bleeds Tiger football.
This is no ordinary boy. In fact, he’s a super hero.
Jaden James was diagnosed early on with several disabilities, autism being the primary diagnosis. But, that doesn’t effect his love for Tiger football, and his older brother, Senior Brennan James, (pictured above).
Wendy James, Jaden’s mother stated, “We were told he would never talk, or walk, and against those opinions, we planned a normal life for him. His older siblings have embraced him, and he s not excluded from anything”
Jaden walks with Mansfield Head Football Coach, Craig Bentley. “It’s game time, Jaden!”

Jaden will lead the MHS Tigers onto their home field. As the sun peaks through the opening, you couldn’t help but see Jaden’s light shine bright.

The crowd cheers as Brennan, and Jaden enter the field.

MHS Tiger Sr. Football huddles before the first snap under the guidance of Coach Bentley.

Jaden readies his helmet as he gets the call to go in as running back.

JADEN SCORES!!!! Surrounded by his teammates, Jaden ran a 7-yard touchdown for the win!!!!

Wendy James, (Jaden’s Mother, Left), and Cindy Willsey (Jaden’s Aunt, Right) cheer on Jaden.

You’re a super hero, Jaden. Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently. God Bless, you and Go Tigers!

Jacobs selected as Sophomore/Junior Classic Coach

The text message came on May 16th. It came from Dierks head softball coach Brad Bray. The message was brief but an exciting one nonetheless for one of Mansfield’s youngest coaches on staff.
The contents of the message basically explained that Lady Tiger softball coach Savanna Jacobs was selected to be on staff at the 16th Annual Sophomore and Junior Classic. What that means is Jacobs will serve as an assistant coach for the Arkansas High School Fast Pitch Association’s showcase softball series.
The two day event allows selected athletes from across the state to develop their skills and be seen in the company of college scouts. High School coaches from a wide array of AAA affiliated schools will mentor the young players.
Started over a decade and a half ago, the two day event typically gathers players from classes 1A through 7A and divides them into 8 teams. The exclusive list of sophomores and juniors are placed under the leadership of designated coaches. From there, the teams practice for a day before competing in live action games the next.
Jacobs is in her first year as the MHS softball head coach. During the 2017 season, the coach took her Lady Tigers to the second round of the class 3A state tournament.
“I have been selected to be an assistant coach for this event held in Conway June 12-13th,” wrote Jacobs in an information email to Mansfield administrators. “This is a great honor. It is a showcase for the top athletes around the state that are currently sophomores and juniors.”
Jacobs also informed her bosses that she has nominated a few Mansfield girls to participate in the endeavor. As of press time, she had not heard if any of the Lady Tiger softball underclassmen were selected.
Coach Jacobs was once a player in the AHSFPA Sophomore and Junior Classic. Under the tutelage of one time Mansfield coach Michael Freeman, the 2010 Mansfield graduate played in the showcase games her penultimate high school season.
Details of the 2017 Classic are still coming in at this time. From all indications, the AHSFPA tournament will once again be played at Hendrix College Stadium.
EDIT – 05/25/2017
Sophomore, Riley Schoell who plays Outfield for the Lady Tigers was also selected to play under Jacobs in the 16th Annual Sophomore and Junior Classic. Congrats Riley!

Youth Tiger Basketball Camp is a SUCCESS!

Sr. High Head Basketball Coach, Keith Dake and Jr. High Head Basketball Coach, Kent Elmore hosted the first ever Basketball camp at Mansfield High School this week for 3rd – 6th grade boys.
“Any successful program starts with the fundamentals, then focuses on individual skills” stated Coach Dake.
The objective of the camp was to improve the athlete’s skill set and confidence with all aspects of basketball. This camp was the first of its kind at Mansfield, and with almost 20 boys in attendance, both Dake, and Elmore seemed to think that they’re onto something for growing the future of Tiger Basketball.
“At this point in this age group, we’re more concerned with their ability to be coached in proper essentials of good basketball skills, rather than conditioning” stated Coach Elmore.

Track Season Completed at 20th Annual Heptathlon

Pictured above, Senior Eden Jones of Mansfield takes this selfie with teammates Audrey Walker and Lennon Woods as they leave for dinner after day one of the state heptathlon.
Mansfield’s senior girls track wrapped up the official sports schedule for the high school with the running of the 20th annual state heptathlon.
Hosted by Cabot HS on May 17 and 18, the large scale specialty event pitted some of the best female athletes from across the state in a two day track competition. Charged with completing a variety of events, the top players from class 1A to 7A took on the challenge of the throws, sprints, hurdles, jumps, and distance race to find the top track athlete in 2017.
Mansfield’s Eden Jones and Audrey Walker represented the Tigers. It was Jones’s third trip to the state heptathlon. It was Walker’s second attempt.
Both gave a good account of themselves and represented the school in a positive way. Neither were in contention for the coveted top prize. However, they did score strong points in their familiar events and finished ahead of many in the field.
Jones inched her way towards the 3,000 point mark. The recently graduated senior accumulated 2,895 points and finished 37th among the large cast of players in attendance.
Walker was slightly ahead of her Tiger teammate after day one but fell in the rankings after an unknown foul was called in the shot put on day two. Because of that zero event, the new graduate dropped to 58th place with 2,302 points.
Walker had amassed 1,520 points on the first day’s four event schedule. A season best 14-6 in the long jump pushed her production. An 18.83 second run over the 100m hurdles and a 29.28 crossing in the 200m dash also gave her solid marks. The discus was not Walker’s forte but she did score to wrap up day one’s total.
The shot put was not Walker’s friend either on the final day of competition. However, the sprint oriented player did well in the high jump and the 800m run to get another 800 points to finish her Tiger career.
Jones stayed with Walker’s pace on the first day gaining 1,505 points over the first four events. A 14-7 long jump, 19.28 second 100m hurdles, and a 29.19 second 200m dash were her best tallies. Similar to her teammate’s toss, the discus provided Jones with little production.
Day two saw Jones rally in the competition as her best events were on the schedule. A high jumper and 800m runner through her entire career, the All-State player saw large dividends in those two areas. The shot put was another nemesis that offered little to her total score.
Arkansas State signee and the class 3A state champion in the 100m hurdles, Allie Hensley, won the heptathlon with 4,393 points. Sydney Lane, the class 3A state high jump champion and ASU recruit, was second with 3,908 points.
“It just goes to show that class 3A girls are among the best in the state,” commented Mansfield coach John Mackey. “Our sized state talent was as good as it has been in years. When you see three class 3A girls in the top ten, you know that we saw some of the best this season.”
Mansfield freshman and All-District athlete Lennon Woods traveled with the group to Cabot. Since each school is mandated to bring a worker and since Woods is to young to enter the heptathlon, Mackey used the Tiger cub to help him runoff over three hours of high jump competition.

Baton is Passed to Upcoming Senior

Pictured above, Senior captain Audrey Walker of Mansfield passes the “legends baton” to 2018 Senior Megan Rose. The pair is flanked by seniors Fayth Schwartz, Whittney Clark, Makiah Holmes, and Eden Jones.
Mansfield track and field players hold many traditions. One that started just a few seasons ago came from one of the sport’s most enthusiastic boosters. That custom is to pass off the “legends” baton to a Lady Tiger track athlete that will hold dear the legacy of the team and one day pay it forward.
In an impromptu ceremony at the conclusion of the class 3A state finals a few weeks ago, senior team member Audrey Walker fulfilled her part of the ritual. The former state champion passed the legacy stick onto up and coming senior member Megan Rose after the team dinner.
Dave Otto, who’s daughter Jessica was a ten time state champion and Arkansas State University track athlete, came up with the idea of bestowing a blessed baton to generations of MHS track athletes. The booster’s idea surfaced after his youngest helped lead Mansfield to an incredible string of state titles throughout her high school career.
Mr. Otto claimed one of the baton’s used during his daughter’s time at state championship competition. He has willed that said symbol to generations of players ever since.
Walker was the keeper of the stick this past season. Her charge was to find someone on next year’s team that will hold the tradition of hard work and unbridled desire to be the best to take over its care.
Walker with the help of her senior classmates, Otto, and Mansfield head coach John Mackey made the selection on May 2. The evening following the state finals, the outgoing senior made the pass of the pampered prize to Rose.
Rose, a member of the class of 2018, is now in possession of the “legends” baton. Her charge will be much the same as the girls before her. She will carry the red stick covered in its homemade cover to and from track meets only to be used by select relay teams.
When the season is done next spring, Rose will make a handoff to the next keeper. Her decision no doubt will carefully be calculated over a full year of scrutiny and attention to detail. She too will find the perfect hand to which the baton will be passed to continue the custom.
