Waldron Nursing Center News – December 29th
Article, and images courtesy of Christine Lees LSW/ADC
(Reference above image) Aubrey Barker, with assistance from her mom turning the pages reads the “Night Before Christmas” story to residents at Waldron Nursing Center.
Waldron Nursing Center residents have truly been blessed in 2016 and are looking forward to continuing with all of the wonderful services and Volunteer hours that everyone continues to do to bring “joy” into their life. It was reported that the Family style Christmas lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by residents that had family members as their guest while others enjoyed Christmas day in the homes of their loved ones. It doesn’t seem possible that the year is gone and I will be putting up the 2017 calendars on each resident side of their room. Many “thanks” goes out to all that helped me collect enough calendars for this to be able to happen on January 1st. To Martin Funeral Home, who have always been so gracious in seeing that we receive a large stack of their calendars each year, along with Community National Bank, others like M.S Haynes of Elk City, KS, Ocie Faye Tinder of Elgin, Il., Oleta Goodner Lewis of Cabot, AR, who all mailed me packets of calendars, to all others who just dropped them off over the past few months. Other “thanks” goes out to Marie Payton and her daughter for the wonderful prizes they have been bringing for our group events. We will soon be scheduling one of the resident favorites of “Let’s make a Deal” and these super big prizes are just what we need. If anyone got gifts for Christmas that just wasn’t to their taste we would love to have them to add to this collection, colognes, etc.

Other activities enjoyed have been the reading of the Christmas Story to residents in the Day Room by little Miss Aubrey Barker, Christmas movie with popcorn and coke, lots of morning crafts, reminiscence with Diane Miller, exercise time, Singing with Temple Baptist group, bingo on Wednesday and Friday afternoon with our Volunteers, Doyle Wayne & Karen helping out along with Pat Morales and Joanna Strozier. We are always looking for extra Volunteers if anyone is interested in helping out at the activities, just come by the Activity Office and pick up a volunteer application.
The Wednesday morning activity of “New Year Party” was a lot of fun as each one was fitted with their “New Year” hat by Alex, Activity Assistant, while Billie, my other assistant, helped out with getting everyone lined up for the photo session. When the activity was over everyone enjoyed a piece of the delicious cake that the dietary department had made for the party.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Frank Lee Moore, Lee as he preferred to be called here at the Nursing Center, will truly be missed by all of us.
In closing we are so blessed by everyone in our community for the continued support that each one does in making life more enjoyable for our residents. A special “thanks” goes out to Steve & Sandy Tull for sponsoring the Carriage rides for our residents as many of them are still talking about how much fun they had doing the ride.
Hackett Helping Hands Extend Reach in 2016
Darrel Spells, Hackett Community Reporter
The Hackett Helping Hands campaign concluded the week of Christmas, with toys and food being delivered in, and around the Hackett Community.
The campaign began on November 1st, and consisted in donation jars being placed throughout the community, as well as a toy/food drive at the Hackett Dollar General. “Through the generous donations of our citizens, I’m proud to announce that this year’s donations exceeded last year” stated Hackett Police Chief, Darrell Spells.

This year over $3,000 was raised to help carry kids shopping, as well as provide toy/food baskets for families in the community. This year’s campaign helped over 80 children including 25 children at local daycares.
The Hackett Police Department wishes to thank all those who donated monetarily or through food or toy donations.
“The people in Hackett go above and beyond in making sure these kids are taken care of. To see the campaign grow this much in one year is a true testament to their giving spirit” added Chief Spells.
Editors Note: We’d like to personally thank Chief Spells, and Officers Hartsfield, and Hall for their commitment to protecting our community, and serving as role models for our youth. Thank you!
Fighting Fires Brings Family Closer Together
Darrell Spells, Hackett Community Reporter
Attending monthly firefighter meetings might not sound like fun to some teenagers, but to Hackett Junior Firefighter Maryah Childs, it’s become a way of life for her over the last five years.
Maryah, a Senior at Hackett High School has been attending meetings and training since the age of twelve. She has served as a Hackett Junior Firefighter since the age of sixteen. Her step father, Jerald McBride currently works for the Arkansas Forestry Commission and has served as a volunteer fireman since 1996.
Ask either one why they enjoy firefighting and a common answer emerges “Helping the public”, McBride said. “I remember fire trucks going by at a young age and just being fascinated by them.”
Maryah also enjoys helping people and the excitement that comes with firefighting. According to McBride, junior firefighters aren’t allowed to go into burning buildings, but are allowed to assist the other firefighters in other capacities.
Maryah noted that she has been attending firefighter training, but will take the courses again in the future to obtain certification. She is planning on pursuing a career as a Paramedic, and was recently recognized as Junior Firefighter of the year, and McBride was honored as Hackett Firefighter of the year.
