Hackett Helping Hands “In the Park”

Last year the Hackett Police Department began a campaign called Hackett Helping Hands. The program focused on providing assistance to families in need within, and around the Haclett community.

This past Saturday, Hackett Police, and Helping Hands supported a fundraiser at the CIty Park where visitors enjoyed Halloween Festivities, costume contests, and a lot of fun.

Last year, partnering with the Dollar General, Hackett Police Dept. provided drop off boxes for customers to donate food and new toys while shopping in the store.  Through the generous donations of Hackett citizens, Hackett Helping Hnads were able to raise approximately $2,000 through the donation jars and a gofundme page.

“It was a community effort all the way around.  We were blessed to have been able to provide not only for the residents of Hackett, but were also able to branch out and help families in the county as well” Hackett Police Chief, Darrell Spells.

The goal for this year is to top last years numbers. “I’m reaching out to not only businesses in Hackett, but to other locations in an effort to reach our goal.  Ask any of our officers, including myself, and they’ll tell you passing out toys and food last year was the highlight of the year.  The smiles on those families faces made our year! Enclosed is a few photos from last years campaign.”

MHS Graduate speaks to Science Class

On October 7, Mansfield fifth and sixth graders were privileged to have Mr. Jim Gage as a guest presenter for Mrs. Kandis Howard’s science classes. Mr. Gage is a Mansfield alumni and was a classmate of Mrs. Howard’s for all 13 years of school. He currently lives in Austin, Texas where he works for Retro Studios which is part of the gaming industry’s giant company Nintendo, which is based in Japan.

Despite the enormity of Nintendo and like companies’ success, the gaming industry actually holds a very narrow field of career opportunities. There are only 80 employees that actually work for Retro Studios and approximately 30,000 people in the industry within all of North America. Mr. Gage is living out his childhood dream of becoming a video game creator where he is a lead engineer. He has worked on the following games during his career: Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart.

Mr. Gage did an awesome job driving home the importance of getting a good education, going over in detail how each of part of education contributes to qualifications needed to be a game engineer/designer. He also emphasized building creativity and gave the kids some ideas for activities and websites that would be useful to them if they were considering going into any field that would require engineering, programming, audio, art, and design.

His story of fulfilling his dream was a living testimony to the kids to never let go of their dreams despite adversities that may get in their way. Mr. Gage encouraged them all to keep working hard and be persistent. He also gave a special emphasis on the fact that despite society’s traditional way of thinking, girls are just as capable in the areas of math and science. His motivating presentation left Mansfield with some very excited kids with big dreams…and a plan of action for which to accomplish those dreams.

MMS Teachers WIN Kickball Game Against 8th Graders

The Mansfield Middle School in collaboration with the Mansfield High School East Lab program wanted to bring awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness.  The High School participated in a fundraising event, Powder Puff Football Game, with proceeds being raised for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The Middle School didn’t want to shy away from the challenge to bring awareness to Breast Cancer and hosted their own 8th Grade students versus Teacher Kickball game.  It appears that school is always in session at the Middle School as the teachers gave the students a kickball lesson with a 16-1 victory.
Student Coach Teacher Jan Carlton, alias Middle School History Teacher, couldn’t get the offense going for the students.  Mrs. Carlton and highly competitive 8th graders, competed to the very end, but were outmatched by their senior opponents.  The Middle School raised near $200.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and will donate the money to the high school East Lab for Susan G. Komen.
FBLA members below helped put together the planning for the event in order to work toward their support for community service: Greyson Baggett, Natalie Allison, Kaitlin Peterson, Katelyn Salmeron, Seth Carter, Madelyn Jones, & Serenity Brunson
The real winner is the community of Mansfield for having such a tremendous young group of students at the Middle School.  These students will be a tremendous asset to the Mansfield Community and Society for a long period of time.

(Reference above image) The only injury was teachers that were very sore on Saturday and Kiara Thomas.  Kiara had extreme pain in her hand from keeping up with the teachers score.  Aaron Brewer often fell asleep keeping up with the 8th grade students kick ball score.

Reather Focuses Efforts on Eagle Project

Photos, and Article by DeAnna Dugan, RP Contributor

Landan Reather is a senior at Mansfield High School, Vice President of FFA, and has been a Boy Scout Troop 330 member since he was 12 years old, and a member of other troops since age 8. Landan’s future goals are to graduate from college, and become an Arkansas Law Enforcement Officer. His hobbies include traditions passed down from his father, and grandfather, such as duck hunting, farming, fishing, and of course the same as his father and grandfather before him, Boy Scouts. Landan’s father Randall boasts with pride talking about carrying on these traditions with Landan and hopes He will continue these traditions with his own family someday.

Landan’s mother Amy was full of enthusiasm as she spoke about Landan’s accomplishments as a Boy Scout, past and present. She informed us that Landan had previously been a part of 12 Eagle Scout projects, the biggest she recalled being the boys refinishing the front gates of the national cemetery.

The younger boys in Landan’s troop look up to him. Randy Claude said his favorite memory of Landan is definitely Camp Hale. They were bass fishing, and Landan kept casting and casting, but it was Randy who got the first fish! He “one upped” the older guy.

Landan, and his parents pose with the troop members in front of the High School office project.

Landan spent many hours completing badges, colors ceremonies, campouts, a hike through Philmont New Mexico, and sitting through meetings, and training courses such as CPR, and First aide. Now all his hard work towards Eagle is finally paying off . Landan’s task he set for his Eagle’s project is a community based project. He said he wanted to give back to the school where he spent all his years from Kindergarten to his present Senior year.

Landan and his troop started out at 8 am Saturday morning to fulfill his project’s duties by clearing grass, digging holes, which Landan meticulously calculated the landscaping, measuring, and spacing to plant the bushes, and shrubs he found to be the most self sustainable. This young man contacted companies such as Yeagars, Lowes, and Sharums getting discounts and donations, which also came from friends, and family to make sure his project came together just how he wanted it to.

Landan has to fulfill 21 badges, and he still has one left to fill, and must write his letter of accomplishments, and get letters of recommendation, before going to the board for review to become an Eagle Ranked Scout, but he is well on his way.

Feel free to go to the High School front office, and enjoy the new landscaping we all now know as Landan’s Eagle Scout Project. Congratulations Landan on your accomplishment and in all your endeavors to come.

*Troop leader, Pastor Gary Martin was not available for comment, he is on a missionary trip to Haiti*
