Bulldogs Step Up To The Plate In Tournament

It was a busy weekend for the Waldron Bulldogs as they fought hard and scored big in the De Queen Baseball Invitational. After losing 9-1 against Horatio on the first night, the Bulldogs upped their game and went on to win 15-4 over Foreman in the second round of tournament play on Friday and 4-2 against Genoa Central on Saturday, placing them with a 3-1 total season record.

“Payton Brown was the starting pitcher in their game against Foreman and picked up the win with Braden Williams receiving,” explained coach Mark Brigance. “They switched positions in the 3rd inning. Brown did a good job staying low in the zone, striking out five batters with 55 pitches. Williams finished the pitching also striking out five. Each hitter in the starting line up had at least one hit.” Williams and Caden Fuller earned three hits apiece followed by Brown, Seth Hunt, and Drake Carnley with two each and with one apiece was Matt Brigance, Blake Owens, and Patrick Poor.

“The kids really love that kind of a night. Caden Fuller led the team with two singles and one double that drove in two rbi’s for him. Braden Williams and Drake Carnley each had two singles. Williams had a runner batted in as well.” The Bulldogs faced Genoa Central next with the Dragons really giving Waldron a run for their money. “Seth Hunt started the game pitching with Payton Brown being his battery mate. Seth worked 6 and 1/3 innings before he finished his pitching duties striking out eight of the 27 batters he faced.”

“He was able to keep them off-balanced with them hitting mostly weak ground balls or towering pop-ups to the outfielders. We only suffered one error on the day and was able to pitch around it. Genoa was shut out until the top of the 7th when they lead off with back-to-back singles. Waldron scored first in the third inning with a lead-off single from Braden Williams. After a stolen base and a couple of pop-ups, Patrick Poor hit it hard at the 3rd baseman in which he couldn’t handle. Patrick has been solid at the plate this season.”

“Drake Carnley and Matthew Brigance the 8 and 9 hole batters, respectively, reached bases with singles or walks in for two different innings with both scoring in the 4th. Carnley off of a Caden Fuller Sac Fly to centerfield and Brigance off a Braden Williams second straight inning single. Blake Owens was hit by the pitch after one out in the fifth inning and moved around to third with a pass ball and a Drake Carnley RBI single. That ended the scoring for the Bulldogs giving them their third win of the season.”

The Bulldogs will get back to it on Tuesday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. as they host the Hackett Hornets.

Junior Lady Tigers Cruise to Victory

Dominating in the throws and the jumps, Mansfield’s junior girls took down all teams at the Booneville Bearcats Junior Relays on March 5.

With 64 of their 137.5 points coming out of the shot, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault, Mansfield took the early lead. Staying steady with plenty of hurdle and relay points, the team continued to control most of the meet.

Waldron behind the strength of distance points kept it close but could only climb to 110 points for the runner-up trophy.

Skylynn Harris, the 2020 class 3A state indoor shot put champion for the high school team, dropped back down to the junior high ranks and won both the shot and discus. Harris won each throw by large margins for a quick 20 points to the team total.

Madelen Jones won the girls 100m hurdles in the narrowest of margins for another Tigers’ first place award. The Tiger freshman who also competed up on the state indoor team ran the 100m highs in 17.62.

Jadelynn Wood took the team’s only other individual first place win by besting all runners over the 300m intermediate hurdles. The freshman was clocked at 55.66 seconds.

Wood, Natalie Allison, Trinity Triska, and Kynslee Ward ran away with the 4x400m relay for the team’s only relay first place award. The combination of two freshmen, one eighth grader, and a seventh grader rounded the 4 laps in 4:48.87.

The junior boys had their moments at Booneville but lack of depth hurt their overall chances. The squad was still competitive with an eighth place finish in the team rankings.
