Lady Pirates Overpower Arrows in Tight Matchup

The Cedarville Junior High Lady Pirates battled it out in a tight matchup against the Junior High Lady Arrows on Monday evening, January 13.

The Lady Arrows played well, but were overpowered by the Lady Pirate’s athletic aggressiveness.

The Lady Arrows found themselves in defensive rebounding territory, which led the Lady Pirates to the free throw line. The Lady Arrows held Cedarville to just 24 points and the Lady Pirates only gave up 18 points to the Arrows.

The Arrows and Pirates scrimmaged over the summer, and the Lady Arrows defeated the Lady Pirates, who are now in a battle for first place in conference play. The Pirate team continues to show improvement in the season with a new coach. It’s evident they are back to take the win!

Jr Lady Tigers Slash Their Way Past Charleston

With multiple Tiger teams in the same conference, many started naming them the Charleston Tigers and the Mansfield “Red” Tigers to set them apart. It almost seemed like Mansfield was below Charleston by having a color put before their prized Tiger mascot. On Thursday, January 16th, the Mansfield Jr Lady Tigers showed that it was time for the “Red Tigers” to be replaced with “The Tigers” with a 51-39 victory over the Charleston “Gold” Tigers.

In most of their games, the Jr Lady Tigers would take the first quarter to study their opponents. This usually creates not only a close first half score but also a fingernail munch fest for fans. But this was Mansfield vs Charleston. Both teams knew they had to either get on top quick or ultimately lose. That is just what the Lady Tigers did as they pounced on Charleston with a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. As the battle ensued, both teams battled it out with some back and forth breakaway plays closing the score to a 22-16 Mansfield lead going into the half.

After halftime, both teams came out with a chip on their shoulder and the REAL game began. The Lady Tigers bought up real-estate at every corner of the basketball court. The perimeter, backboard, in the paint, it didn’t matter. If it was in bounds, Mansfield made sure they owned it. The third quarter ended 38-25 in the Lady Tigers’ favor.

As the fourth quarter began, Mansfield must have recalled their one-point loss at Charleston earlier in the season. The Lady Tigers would not allow the same to happen in this game as they surged ahead giving every player on the team an opportunity to touch the court in their 51-39 victory over their Tiger foes.

Skylynn Harris and Alyson Edwards led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 13 points each. Alyson scored mostly by battling on the backboards while Skylynn was able to strike from the perimeters. Harlie Fuller knocked down 11 points with her quick feet and got the fans to say “OHHH” multiple times with her ankle-breaking moves. Natalie Allison showed how dangerous she is anywhere on the court by scoring six points against the boards, from the perimeter, and driving in for a basket. Charleston held Kynslee Ward and Seven Sanderson to four points apiece, but Ward and Sanderson showed excellent teamwork by unselfishly getting the rock to their teammates for scores.

“If you missed the Jr High Lady Tigers game against Charleston, you missed a great one,” said Coach Joshua Bryan. “What an exciting win in front of a big crowd. We want to thank all the fans for coming out and supporting us. It was shared glory as multiple Lady Tigers scored in the double digits. This win moves us to 13-2 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. Also, we have a new leader in all-time steals for a single season. Eighth-grader Kynslee Ward earned her 84th steal of the season in our game against Greenland surpassing a shared title by Christa Clark and Dana Johnson with 83 steals each. Congratulations to Kynslee for her record-setting performance!”

The Jr Lady Tigers will be back at it on Monday, January 20th at Cedarville against the Lady Pirates with games starting at 4:30 p.m.

7th Grade Tigers Caught By Toe in Loss To Charleston

Even though it’s not “November” nor is it “raining”, the fact remains that nothing lasts forever. Muhammad Ali was 56-5 in his lustrous boxing career. Dale Earnhardt won just 76 races from 1975-2001. Even arguably the greatest NBA team of all time ( 1995-96 Chicago Bulls) went 72-10 on their way to the championship. So inevitably the Mansfield 7th Grade Tigers would drop at least one game. That game, in particular, was one to a formidable opponent as their loss came to the Charleston Tigers 18-12.

Before the night of January 16th, the Tigers were undefeated in their season. But even after taking their first “L”, the Tigers continue to push forward with a winning attitude and over the top skillset. As the game tipped off last Thursday evening, both Tiger teams hit the court with engines revved and ready for takeover. Halftime saw Mansfield up 10-7 in a match where defense was the name of the game.

Austin Ruiz owned the court offensively as he zoomed away with four points along with five steals and one rebound. Brandon Raynor set the hardwood ablaze with his defensive dominance taking seven rebounds and two points. Also gaining two points each was Cameron Pettus, Aaron Person, and Jeremy Strozier. With a combined eight rebounds was Pettus, Person, Strozier, Winston Allison, and Trey Powell. And Strozier, Pettus, and Allison came together to earn six steals.

The Mansfield 7th Grade Tigers will travel to Cedarville on Monday, January 20th to take on the Pirates starting at 4:30 p.m.

7th Grade Lady Tigers Blocked Out By Charleston

When people see a team lose, they tend to pass them by. The Mansfield 7th Grade Lady Tigers are NOT one of those teams you want to do that to. As they are still transferring from little league to 7th-grade basketball, they are learning many new styles. They are also gaining the most important factor of all. Experience. The 7th Grade Lady Tigers may have fallen to Charleston 21-13 on Thursday, January 16th, but they learned some important mistakes from the tough loss which are being tended to at this moment. Not by coach, Joshua Bryan. But by the players who are determined to be the next picture on the wall of the Tigers gymnasium.

Shelbie Fuller played like a shark after prey as she swam the court delivering Tiger dominance ending the night with eight points, three rebounds, and one steal. Ambria Whittaker offered zero rest for Charleston as she earned three points along with six rebounds, and two steals. Maylei Rogers outperformed almost every “Gold” player on the court with her high speeds and leadership gaining her three rebounds and two points.

And rounding out the Lady Tigers rockin’ roster was Azlynn Nelson, Presley Curry, and Trinity Triska with a combined four rebounds and three steals. Next up for the 7th Grade Lady Tigers, it’s off to Cedarville to again try their hand at the Cedarville Lady Pirates on Monday, January 20th starting at 4:30 p.m.

Jr Tigers Run Out Of Time Against Charleston

Ask any coach and they’ll tell you the same thing. It doesn’t matter who you play, it matters how you play. Win or lose, coaches want to see their players give every iota of effort they have in a game. That being the case, the Mansfield Jr High Tigers must have their coach, Keith Stovall, beaming with pride as they left every ounce, pound, and ton that they had in them on the court in their 34-27 narrow loss to the Charleston Tigers on January 16th.

Mansfield kept the first two quarters of the game within points of their opponent as the two Tiger teams ferociously played keep-away with the ball going into halftime 14-13 Charleston. Offensively, it was Clint Stovall who plowed through Charleston’s defense bringing in nine points on the game along with a total of four rebounds and two steals. Tyler Turnipseed gave the Gold Tigers a what for as he laid down seven points, seven rebounds, and two steals for Mansfield.

Austin Quinalty left his blood, sweat, and tears on the court ending the game with six points, five rebounds, and one steal. And Drew Elmore, Peyton Martin, and Braxton Byers were the Tiger trio that hooped it up and slammed it down against Charleston ending with a combined five points and seven rebounds.

After playing the Cedarville Pirates last Monday, the Jr Tigers will gear up for round two as these powerhouse teams face-off tonight, January 20th, with games starting at 4:30 p.m.

Lady ‘Backs Hang 100 on Vanderbilt in Nashville

Number 23 Arkansas defeated Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium in dominating fashion as it defeated the Commodores 100-66. Arkansas (15-3, 3-2), on Sunday, won its second straight SEC game. Vanderbilt (12-6, 2-3) lost to Arkansas in Memorial Gymnasium for the first time since 2001.

The Arkansas scoring attack was again led by senior guard Alexis Tolefree, who put up a career-best 25 points against the Commodores on an efficient 9 for 14 clip from the field. Sophomore guard Rokia Doumbia also turned in a career-best performance, posting her first career double-double going for 13 points while also snaring 10 rebounds.

The game was close in the first quarter. Arkansas broke the game open in the second, using a barrage of three-point shots to stretch the lead out to as much as 21 in the first half. Arkansas went on a devastating 28-10 run in the second quarter, getting contributions from Tolefree, Dungee, Ramirez and Eryn Barnum.

The Lady Razorbacks return to Bud Walton Arena for a two game stretch which kicks off with the Hogs hosting Georgia on Thursday, The Georgia game will air on the SEC Network with tip-off set for 6 p.m.

Council Approves Dispatch Fee

The Mansfield City Council met on Thursday evening, January 16. One item of unfinished business, the approval of the Sebastian County Dispatch fee.

In a vote of five-to-one, the council voted to approve the fee levied by the county for non-emergency dispatching services. Voting for: Sheri Hopkins, Rick McDaniel, Beverly Lyons, Julie Thomas and Dave Johnson. Voting against, Jan Carlton.

“I cannot vote for this,” stated Carlton, defending her lone vote. Lyons stated, “we’re going to have to do it, although we don’t like it.”

The council voted to pay for six months of services at a time out of the general fund. The annual charge for the city to continue receiving services is $2,257. The non-emergency services include: answering city phone lines, dispatching non-emergency calls, entering property in NCIC/ACIC, validating property in NCIC/ACIC, driver’s license and license plate queries and arrest warrant queries.

March 1 is the deadline for cities across Sebastian County to agree or decline the proposal. In December, Sheriff Hobe Runion notified municipal leaders that partnering cities would see “no change.” However, to those unwilling, they would “need to make other arrangements.”

Update: Paris Lady Eagles Continue Winning Ways at Hot Springs Fountain Lake

The Paris Lady Eagles continued to surprise their conference foes with yet another win, this time on the road at Hot Springs Fountain Lake. The Lady Eagles defeated Fountain Lake by a score of 50-35. The road win for Paris saw the Lady Eagles get off to a good start in the first half with 38-14 lead at halftime. Paris coach Dustin Williams commented, “Good first half , we were up 38-14 at the half. We held off a late push from Fountain Lake in the second half to win 50-35.” Harlie Watts led Paris with 19 points. Jacee Hart had 8 points as did Karsyn Tencleve, and Akira Robinson added 2 points.

Coach Williams commented on the progress his team continues to show with each game. “Second game in a row where we came out of the gate hot from behind the three-point arc. We played aggressive defense early and didn’t let Fountain Lake get set in their half-court offense. That led to a few points off of turnovers and transition baskets from our defensive pressure. I have to give Fountain Lake credit for never giving up. They fought back in the second half and our girls were able to protect the ball and secure enough defensive rebounds to put the game away. Our girls have now won six games in a row and seven out of their last eight.”

The Lady Eagles win improves their conference record to 4-3 and places them alone in fourth place in the conference, one game behind third place Jessieville. Paris hosts conference leader Lamar on Tuesday in another important conference match-up.

The Paris senior boys team took another hard loss, this time to Fountain Lake. The Eagles continued to play hard and entered the fourth quarter with the lead. Paris coach Mike Foster said after the game, “We led by two entering the fourth quarter. We played extremely well on defense against the top team in the conference. We just couldn’t get our offense going.” Nick Bazyk led Paris scorers with 21 points.

Charleston Update: Charleston Wins Battle of Tigers

Charleston hosted Mansfield on Friday night in girls and boys senior high basketball. When the night was over, Charleston added conference wins for both teams with victories over Mansfield.

The Charleston Lady Tigers defeated Mansfield 54-17. Charleston outscored Mansfield 23-1 in the first quarter and never looked back. Charleston has now had back-to-back, lopsided conference wins and appears to be heading into post-season form as the Lady Tigers fast-break offense is running in full gear. Charleston coach Jason Rucker said after his team’s win, “I thought we played extremely fast again which allowed us to get in a better rhythym shooting the ball.” Payton Rucker led Charleston with 10 points and Brook Groan had 7 points.

With the win, Charleston improves its record to 15-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Lady Tigers are alone in first place, ahead of second place Elkins who is 4-1. Charleston hosts Elkins next week in an important conference match-up.

The Charleston Tigers senior boys team defeated Mansfield 56-43. With the win, Charleston is now alone in first place with a 5-0 conference record. Waldron is in second place with a 5-1 record, and Elkins is now 4-1. The Tigers have an important game in the race for first place in the conference with Elkins next week.

Brayden Ross led Charleston with 20 points and Brandon Scott added 15 points. The win was important for Charleston who was playing after a big win earlier in the week over a very good Waldron team. Charleston coach B.J. Ross said after the game, “I thought we played well given the fact we were coming off an emotional win on Tuesday, and it was homecoming. We got off to a great start and we’re extremely proud of the way our players have continued playing together and getting better everyday.”

Arkansas Tech Announces Fall 2019 Dean’s List

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (January 17, 2020)–Arkansas Tech University has announced its Dean’s List for undergraduate students on its Russellville campus for the fall 2019 semester.

A student must achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher and complete at least 12 hours of college-level coursework to be named to the Dean’s List.

A total of 1,971 Arkansas Tech students achieved that distinction during fall 2019. Included in the fall 2019 Dean’s List are 831 students that achieved a 4.0 grade point average, a 3.6 percent increase over fall 2018.
