Lamar Narrowly Avoids Upset at Hands of Rapidly Improving Eagles, 56-50

The Paris Eagles traveled to Lamar on Tuesday night to face the Warriors in the opening game of conference action for both schools. The Paris Eagles played hard and either tied or had the lead in the fourth quarter against the heavily-favored Warriors, but were unable to come away with the upset road win. Lamar hung on for a tough 56-50 win over the rapidly improving Paris Eagles. The Eagles have played hard all season, but last evening, Paris may have played their best game this season.

For the Eagles, Luke Trusty and Jude Simmons led Paris on the boards with 6 rebounds each. Dylan Krigbaum led all Paris scorers with 15 points. Coach Mike Foster continues to be pleased with his teams effort, but noted that this team, gaining experience with each game, needs to learn how to close games out with a win. “The boys played hard just as they always do. We just need to learn how to win a game in the 4th quarter. We have been tied or led in the 4th quarters of 6 of our 8 losses this season. We will keep working hard!”

In Paris girls action, the Lady Eagles lost to a talented, veteran Lamar team, 59-39. Harlie Watts led all Paris scorers with 16 points and 3 assists. Jadyn Hart added 10 points, 4 assists, and 6 rebounds. Paiton Forbes had 10 points, 4 assists, and 6 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Eagles, Jacee Hart had 5 points, 6 rebounds, and Karsyn Tencleve added 2 points. Coach Dustin Williams noted that the experienced Lamar team was able to hold off a couple of Paris runs that threatened to close the lead on the Lady Warriors. “Our team played hard, but the veteran Lamar team was able to hold off a couple of pushes by our young team. We are still finding our way as a team. We cut the lead to 6 a few times but couldn’t get over the hump. I am very proud of how our young tam was able to hang in there with the conference favorite (Lamar) during the first half of the game.”

Both Paris teams have played with tremendous heart so far this season, and have been fun to watch. Paris fans can also be very proud of not only your teams, but by the way you have supported the Eagles, both home and away. I think we can all agree that both teams have improved significantly since the start of the season in November. The conference schedule will certainly not get any easier as time moves along, but, both teams will improve with each game. It is clear to this reporter that the players believe in themselves and will continue to work hard and represent Paris with pride each time they take the court. Both teams are fun to watch, and I know they and the coaches appreciate the support of the Paris fan base.

The conference schedule will continue for Paris this Friday night as the teams will once again go on the road to play the Perryville Mustangs. The teams records may not be impressive at this point, but their play is indicative of teams that are much better than their losses at the start of the season. In fact, if both teams continue to improve, both could be tough outs in the senior district tournament. Both boys and girls Paris junior teams are talented, and if freshmen are brought up to the varsity teams in post season to combine with the current varsity rosters, Paris could be formidable in February tournament play.

It will be Friday the 13th in Perryville when the Eagles play the Mustangs. And as always, it should be a scary night for both teams as the Eagles and Mustangs will play in their second conference game of the season. Four games will be played: junior boys and girls, and senior boys and girls. It will be time for the Paris fans to brave the drive to Perryville to support their Eagles!

Jr Tigers Unable To Throw Charleston Off Their Scent

The Mansfield Jr High Tigers had a rough go at it in Monday nights match-up with the Charleston Tigers with each squad bringing home a loss. But the final scores don’t do any justice for what actually transpired on the court. Offensively and defensively the Lady Tigers were on top of their game not once allowing Charleston to intimidate them. They played as hard as they could, doing everything to the best of their abilities but when their time was up, the score read 42-40 Charleston.

Clint Stovall

They’ve got a few rough edges that can be filed off but we’re getting where I want them to be quicker than anticipated,” explained Head Coach, Joshua Bryan. Freshman, Skylynn Harris led her team in scoring and rebounds with a total of 14 points and nine rebounds. She also grabbed four steals. Kynslee Ward followed with nine points and Harlie Fuller made eight. Both girls also snagged six steals each. Natalie Allison got six points under her belt along with Alyson Edwards with three. Seven Sanderson also added three rebounds to the nights’ final totals. “Right now, shot selection and scoring opportunities is our main focus at this time.”

Kynslee Ward

The Mansfield Tigers, unfortunately, saw the same fate as their counterparts. “We had a tough road loss Monday night at Charleston,” states Head Coach, Keith Stovall. “We did everything right except consistently put the ball in the hole. The boys had a solid defense, strong rebounding, executed and ran our offense well, got good shots, and limited turnovers. We just could not buy a layup or block a shot all night.”

Freshman, Clint Stovall, led in scoring with 16 points. Braxton Byers added four points. And Tyler Turnipseed and Drew Elmore chipped in three and two points respectively. “We had a chance to win and maintained the lead until the fourth quarter. We are super proud of our defense and rebounding which is exactly what Coach Dake and I always emphasize. Even on bad shooting nights, solid defense keeps you in the game and gives you a chance to win. Other than shooting, the only other negative I can find was late in the game as Charleston got the lead, we got a little antsy with our offense and shot more three’s than we had previously in the game.” The Jr High Tigers get no time to rest as they turn around to prepare for the Arvest Invitational taking place this week until Saturday. The Lady Tigers will start tournament play first at 5 p.m. tonight in Waldron against the Lady Bulldogs. Boys play at 6:15 p.m.

7th Grade Tigers Earn One For The Books

In their first conference game of the 2019 basketball season, the 7th Grade Tigers walked into Charleston ready to pounce. With both Tiger teams equally matched in talent, it really was an option to be anybody’s game. It all boiled down to who could make the final minute push. The 7th Grade Lady Tigers were first to get the action rolling. With this being the third game for the Lady Tigers, the girls are still in the process of trying to find their flow.

Trinity Triska

Mansfield ending falling 32-13 to Charleston but still had plenty of shining moments. The team combined for a total of 16 rebounds and three steals. Leading in scoring was Ambria Whittaker with five points followed by Trinity Triska with four. Maylei Rogers and Azlynn Nelson delivered two apiece as well. With a week until their next game, there’s still plenty of time to fine-tune some skills. Once polished, the 7th Grade Lady Tigers will have opponents running for the hills.

Ambria Whittaker

The 7th Grade Tigers don’t mess around when it comes to getting the job done. Both Tiger teams were out for blood and the proof was shown on the hardwood. When it came to crashing the boards, the Tigers didn’t have any problems as they walked away with a total of 13 rebounds along with 12 combined steals. Winston Allison was first to lay down the law against Charleston with his three-point shot from downtown at the sound of the first-quarter final buzzer.

Allison would go on to make two more three-pointers and finish the night with 11 total points. Cameron Pettus chipped in four points of his own followed by Austin Ruiz with three and Aaron Person with two. With plenty of back and forth action, the game winded down to a minute left on the clock and the score reading 19-19. In true edge of your seat hold your breath Tiger fashion, Mansfield pulled off the incredible 20-19 win with a free throw. It’s back to work on December 19 for the 7th Grade Tigers as they face the Bulldogs in Waldron at 4:30 p.m.

MMS: Lions and Tigers and Snakes? Oh My!!!!

Mansfield Middle School in conjunction with Career Development Day, brought in a former student of Mrs. Lori Lamb, Kimberly Rogers, to examine the world of Herpetology. Students were able to witness a cobra being milked for its venom as well as hear the rattle of a rattlesnake. The students, of course, did not get to witness with live touch but were able to witness it through a protected glass that housed the venomous snakes. The non-venomous reptiles were handled first hand with a Burmese Python which is pictured with multiple students in the photos below as well as an 18-foot Reticulated Python. Students also learned the different degrees to pursue and how to work toward attaining a herpetology degree.

MMS Students Give Back To Those Who Served

A group of Mansfield Middle School students made a trip to the Fort Smith Convention Center to help construct over 16,500 wreaths for the National Cemetery. Each student helped to individually make wreaths to put on display at the National Cemetery. Their goal was to make at least 15-20 each in their time volunteering. Students represented MMS well while gaining valuable knowledge of the time and effort that goes into preparing decorations for the National Cemetery. Students were pictured helping donate their time and energy with local community members.

No Singing The Hardwood Blues For These Sr Hornets

On Friday, December 6, the 2A Hackett Sr High Hornets and Lady Hornets took on the 4A De Queen Leopards. Although they didn’t get the win, it was some much needed and intense practice that Hackett needed to get them geared up for conference play. The Hornets came up short with a 55-30 score but they’re not gonna let it get them down. “Defensively we just haven’t shown the energy that is needed to be successful,” explained Head Coach, Kent Elmore. “The mentality of playing defense is something we haven’t quite figured out yet.”

“We had a bad shooting night and when those nights happen you have to be able to pick it up on the other end of the floor. We were able to get any open look we wanted but could not get any of them to fall. I expect us to come out with a much different team this Friday when we face the 1-5 Danville Little Johns. We will focus this week on defensive mentality and getting a lot of reps shooting the ball. Once our defense improves so will our offense and wins will follow.”

The Lady Hornets saw the same fate as the boys when it came to Danville. Hackett fell 43-27 to the Lady Leopards but it wasn’t without a fight. Kayla Richardson led with nine points while Faith Thomas followed with six. Autum Neal and Rain Vaughn each had four, and Madi Taylor and Jordyn Null pulled in two apiece. Head Coach for the Lady Hornets, Broc Adams, is getting ready for their upcoming game against the 4-2 Danville Lady Little Johns.

“Danville is a really good basketball team! We are going to have to take care of the basketball, first and foremost. They put a lot of pressure on the ball so our guards will have to be ready to go. I like where our defense is, we just need to continue working hard and improving each day. It’s always tough to play at Danville, so we just need to be focused on doing what we can control and not playing above ourselves!”

Paris Jr. Eagles Fly Past Lamar 48-21

The Paris boys junior high team played perhaps its best game so far in the young season on Monday night defeating Lamar 48-21. The talented junior Eagles continue to improve and show Paris fans that the future of Eagles basketball is indeed bright.

The junior Lady Eagles faced the Lamar junior Lady Warriors in the first game of the junior high double-header. In a physical game between two teams who have a history of physically competitive games, Paris lost to the Lady Warriors 32-21. Although Paris lost the game, the team showed good progress against Lamar who is favored by most coaches to win the conference this season.

Lady Eagles coach Dustin Williams was pleased with his team’s effort against the talented Lady Warriors. “We had the lead until approximately 3 minutes to go in the first half. Momentum changed toward the end of the half. Lamar is a very talented team who is picked to win the conference. I thought we held our own and will continue to get better. I feel we are ahead of where we were this time last season. We had the chance to play some talented teams early in the schedule and it has helped us going into the conference portion of the schedule. We just have to keep pushing. I love the fight in this team. Our execution and chemistry will continue to get better.” The Lady Eagles were led by Brailey Forst and Rachel O’Neal who both had 7 points. Jayden Wells had 5 points.

The Paris junior boys improved their record to 5-2 with a decisive win over Lamar. Coach Mike Foster thinks the team may be playing its best basketball to this point in the season. “The team is getting better with every game. We are playing good team basketball.” The Eagles were led by Juan Santos who poured in 17 points. Jesse Wells had 16 points and 5 rebounds on the night. Sam Muldrow rounded out the leaders with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The game was never really contested by the Warriors as the full court pressure defense of the Eagles created multiple scoring opportunities off of turnovers created by the Paris defense.

Both Paris junior high teams will play next at Perryville on Friday. As the conference season gets into full swing, it is almost assured that every game from now until the end of the season will be physical and intense. On Monday night, bodies were flying and players were hitting the floor. That is a trend that should continue as teams play for a junior high conference championship. It will be contingent on game officials to maintain control of the games, call appropriate fouls, and keep the game as safe as possible for players on both teams.

The Paris senior Eagles and Lady Eagles play at Lamar tonight. Game time for the senior high games will be approximately 6 p.m.

Tiger Teachers vs Students Volleyball Match A Smashing Hit

Coach Erica McKay

The Mansfield Middle School had a Faculty vs. Student Volleyball game on Friday, November, 22 with the teachers adding another win to their streak. The students who participated played hard and worked well as a team. Additionally, the crowd in the bleachers loved cheering and socializing during the volleyball game too. Some of the Jr High volleyball players even got in on the action. Everyone participating brought their best to the court in an attempt to grab the win. For the eighth graders who played against the faculty, a determination was ever-present as well along with great sportsmanship. In the end, everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves while also proving that Tiger Pride is alive and well.

Cedarville EAST Taking Donations For Local Seniors

Two young ladies from the Cedarville High School EAST program (Education Accelerated by Service and Technology) have come together in response to a need in their community. EAST engages students in service-learning projects using teamwork coupled with cutting-edge technology. First year eighth-grade students, Haley Hurst and Emily Mizell, recently found out that the Cedarville Senior Center was taking donations for local senior shut-ins and decided to take action into their own hands.

The girls are asking that all donations be brought to the principles office at the middle school by Friday, December 13. Items needed are snacks, canned foods, lap blankets, stuffed animals, oatmeal, cereal, toothpaste, denture cleaner, shampoo, and gloves. Any sized donation is more than welcomed to help these EAST students achieve this Christmas blessing for their community. Both girls have said, “The best thing about this project is that we are able to make a difference for the elderly people in our community!”
