Cowboy Up – Lavaca

“Well, it’s bulls and blood, it’s dust and mud
It’s the roar of a Sunday crowd
It’s the white in his knuckles, the gold in the buckle
He’ll win the next go ’round
It’s boots and chaps, it’s cowboy hats
It’s spurs and latigo
It’s the ropes and the reins, and the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo”
Garth Brooks

The Double D Rodeo Company was at the Boone Miller Lone Pine Arena for the Lavaca, Arkansas Junior Rodeo this past weekend. The rodeo started each night at 7pm and went long into the night. There were events for ages 19 and under. There was a lot of talent from around the Area. Cowboys and Cowgirls came in from as far away as Mena, Arkansas and several from Oklahoma, and of course there were a lot from right here in Lavaca competing in front of their home town crowd.

Health Fair Hits Homerun

The Mansfield School District sponsored the seventh annual health fair on Friday, March 29. This year’s theme was “Homerun for Health.”

Amanda Wilson, a truly hardworking and dedicated volunteer, knocked it out of the park with this year’s event. The gymnasium at the high school was all abuzz with children, teens and vendors.

Around 30 booths were set up offering information and giveaways. Banks, fire service, law enforcement, utility services, military, fitness centers as well as churches visited with the students about their services.

Students were able to get face paintings, and bags full of goodies from vendors. Attendees were treated to lunch, snacks and drinks.

The event was a huge success! Special thanks to all who donated their services, goods and of their time.

Judge Makes Proclamation of Purple Heart County

On Friday, March 29, Scott County Judge James Forbes welcomed area veterans and spoke humbly in heartfelt gratitude.

“…The contributions and sacrifices of the men and women in Scott County, Arkansas who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedom and the way of life enjoyed by our citizens AND WHEREAS many men and women in uniform have given their lives while serving in the Armed Forces AND WHEREAS on March the 29th day of 2019 has been officially designated as the day in Scott County, Arkansas to remember and recognize veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart. Now therefore let it be resolved that the County Judge of Scott County Arkansas does proclaim that Scott County, Arkansas is a Purple Heart County…”

Purple Heart recipient Ed Mathis was honored by Judge Forbes as well as fellow veterans. Mathis served in both the Army and Marine Corps. Also represented were many members of the VFW Post 1345.

Hornets Trying To Find Wings

One thing is for certain. You’d be hard pressed to find a more humbled group of young men. The 2-5 Hackett Hornets might still be trying to find their rythym but when they do. Look out. Facing each other for the second time this season were the Hornets and the Hector Wildcats. Losing a close 3-2 battle in their first meeting, Hackett fell short last night by only three runs taking a 7-4 loss.

#15 Brady Hester

Running for a cause with four runs total were Avery Hester, Brady Hester, Jake Fisher, and Tyler Satterfield. With more hits than the Beatles were Avery with one hit and two batted in runners, Jake Fisher and Bradley Martin with one hit each and freshman Ethan Slavens with one hit and two runners batted in.

#20 Ethan Slavens

Causing damage and leaving wreckage in the field was Ethan with seven putouts and one assist. Jake and Tyler with four and one putouts respectivley. Layne Dennis with two putouts. Freshman Mason Oelke with five putouts and one assist. Freshman Cash Oliver with two assist. And Avery and Bradley with a combined two putouts and three assist.

#5 Tyler Satterfield and #00 Cash Oliver

Pitching for the Hornets in last nights game was Avery Hester and Ethan Slavens. Avery threw out 101 pitches to 28 batters striking out 5 and Ethan hurled out 22 pitches to six batters. Hackett will face Greenland away on Monday, April 1 for a non-conference match-up at 4:30 p.m.

Tough Break For Waldron Bulldogs

Sporting a young team this season with a 0-7 record, the Waldron Bulldogs arent done yet. Every day they continue to one up their baseball skills during practice while figuring out what works and what doesnt work during games.

The Bulldogs battled the Leopards at De Queen in last night dust bowl. Ending the game in five innings with a final score of 15-4 De Queen, the Bulldogs did what they could against this take-over team. Scoring the four runs for Waldron were Bryson Bailey, Seth Hunt, and Tyler Owens.

Hitting first and asking questions later with a combined six hits were Bryson, Seth, Drake Carnley, Clayton Montgomery, and Braden Williams who also batted in two runners along with Seths one. Hide your valuables because the Bulldogs are on a stealing spree. Bryson and Caden Fuller made out with two stolen bases.

Helping to keep balance on the field was Ruben Valdez with four putouts and one assist and Bryson Bailey with one putout. The Bulldogs are staying home tonight to play rival team the 2-4 Mansfield Tigers with a 4:30 p.m. start time.
