Sr Hornets Couldn’t Cross County Line

By Megan Hecox

The County Line Indians made their way into Hackett territory to take on the Hornets for last nights basketball game. The Hornets and Lady Hornets came up short in both games and walked away empty handed. The Hornets ended their game 68-43 while the Lady Hornets final score read 59-45.

The Hackett Hornet boys team were put on notice early by the Indians near-perfect shooting skills and that notice was continued throughout the game. The Hornets had a few good scoring runs against County Line but could not catch up. Avery Hester led the Hornets with 12 points and Dylan Kats, Ty Smith, and Zach Bragg combined for 22 points. Anthony Collins, Christian Woods, Jack Terrell, and Luke Patterson hit a few key shots also. The loss puts the Hackett Boys at 4-8 in overall play and 1-2 in conference play.

The Hackett Lady Hornets played with intensity against County Line but could not overcome the quickness of the Indians. County Line seemed to have an answer for every move the Lady Hornets made on the court. The Lady Hornets were led by Kayla Richardson as she sunk 14 points against the Indians. Audrey Chaney scored 12 points while Faith Thomas, Taylor Glass, and Stephanie King combined for 19 points in the game. The Lady Hornets fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference.

The losses to County Line may have been hard to swallow, but the Hornets aren’t about to back down. There is a bunch of Basketball still to be played this season and the Hornets are perfecting their skills and learning from their mistakes.

Hornet Bowlers Keep Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’

By Megan Hecox

The Hackett Bowling teams crossed lanes against the Hillbillies from Ozark yesterday. The Hornet Boys team won by 93 pins over Ozark in a one-sided matchup. Tanner Wright and Pacey McBride combined for 341 pins for the Hornets as the Hackett boys cruised past Ozark.

The Lady Hornets came up just a few pins short against the Hillbillies in a thriller of a match. Leading the Lady Hornets was Rachel Widmer with an awesome 165 pins scored. The Lady Hornets have been in some really close matches this season and aren’t afraid of any team that steps up to the line.

Hackett’s Bowling Coach Matt Whitsett said this about his swarm of bowlers “It’s hard to keep them motivated this time of year with semester test going on and everyone ready for Christmas break. We will practice a couple of times over the break and try to refocus and get back into the swing of things in January”.

The Hornets will be excited for a late Christmas present WIN as they face off against Greenwood January 10th.

Jr Tigers Elk Hunt Comes Up Short

By Megan Hecox

The Mansfield Jr High Tigers took their game on the road and headed to Elkins to face the Elks in last nights match. The Jr Lady Tigers fell short to the Lady Elks 34-26 and the Tigers came in with a 35-22 loss.

Mansfield’s Jr Boys are looking to find a solution to their second-half kryptonite issues. The Tigers have been ahead at halftime in a few games this season only to watch that lead dwindle away. The Tigers Coach Kent Elmore said “We played one good half of basketball last night. We have to improve on finishing our games. Being up at halftime and not being able to finish it off is very frustrating for everyone. We are where we need to be, we just have to start closing close games out.”

The loss to Elkins puts the Tigers at 3-2 in conference play. But before they go into the seasons break, they must square off against a talented group of Pirates from Greenland. If the Tigers can beat the Pirates this Thursday, it’ll give them the upper hand going into 2019 play. When asked how this season compares to last year Coach Elmore said  “The seasons are very similar to each other. I lost some great players last year. Last year we got off to a much slower start in regards to wins and losses. But we turned it on late. This year we have hit a good positive stride in conference play and I hope to continue that after the break. All in all, we have much more depth this year and it’s nice having 4 freshmen on the floor at one time.

The Jr Lady Tigers couldn’t seem to get a firm grip on the Elks last night. Although the final score put the Lady Tigers at a loss, they went shot for shot with a larger Elkins team. Mansfield’s Lady Tigers Coach Erica McKay said “We did not come out and execute well last night. We have to improve on being strong with the ball and cutting down on our turnovers. We are going to continue to work extremely hard on taking care of the ball. We also need to increase our intensity on defense.” The Lady Tigers will brush the Elkins game off as a lesson learned and concentrate on the next task ahead in the Greenland Pirates.

The Jr Tigers and Lady Tigers will have home court advantage this Thursday as they face off against the Greenland Pirates at 4:00 pm.

Coach Hannah Scantling: Proud To Be A Bulldog

By Megan Hecox

Hannah Scantling was your average high school student growing up in Waldron. She played basketball and volleyball and lived for the game. During high school, Hannah already knew what she wanted to do after college. Coach. She got her inspiration from her high school basketball and volleyball coach, Coach Mo. “I saw how passionate she was about the game and the excitement she displayed on the sideline and I knew that was something I wanted to be a part of after college.” Coach Scantling is in her second year coaching at her Alma Mater and her first year being a 7th grade and Jr High Head Coach. “Being a Bulldog is so special to me,” says Coach Scantling.

Coach Hannah Scantling also drew her inspiration to coach from her dad. He wasn’t “certified” in coaching but he was Hannahs biggest supporter and coach growing up. He taught her everything she knows about basketball. Coach Scantlings dad not only taught her how to play basketball and to really love the game but he was also there almost every weekend cheering her on as she played. “I have always had the heart to help people and coaching gives me the perfect opportunity to do that. Whether its pushing someone to their fullest potential, lending a helping hand, or just being a listening ear, my girls know that they can always come to me,” expresses Coach Scantling.

Needing A Quick Appetizer For A Christmas Party? Try out these Broccoli & Cheese Balls!

Do you have an office Christmas party or a Christmas lunch that you need a quick and easy recipe for?  Try out this Broccoli & Cheese Balls recipe served with a side of ranch to dip them in!  You won’t even feel guilty for eating them because they have a vegetable in them, so they have to be healthy right?

Ingredients:

2 (12 oz.) Bags of Frozen Broccoli

2 to 3 Shallots

2 Eggs

3 cups of shredded Colby and Cheddar Cheese

3 tablespoons of Minced Garlic

1 (8 oz.) can of Planko Crumbs (should equal 3 cups)

A dash of Salt

A dash of Pepper

Ranch Dressing for dipping

*If you are doing low carb you could substitute the Planko Crumbs with Plain Pork Rinds*

Directions:

Preheat oven at 390 degrees.  Cook frozen Broccoli as directed on the bag in the microwave.  While broccoli is cooking, place shallots in a food processor and chop them up.  Next, drain any water off of cooked broccoli, and then place it in a food processor along with the onion shallots with a dash of pepper and a dash of salt to taste.  Chop up ingredients.  If you do not have a food processor, just make sure you chop your broccoli into fine pieces as well as your onion shallots.  Then, remove broccoli and onions from the processor, and place in a bowl.  Add eggs, cheese, and garlic.  Stir.  Now, add your Planko crumbs.  Stir once again.  Next, spoon and form into small balls about a tablespoon at a time.  Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray and place broccoli balls onto your pan.  Bake at 390 degrees for approximately 25 minutes or until the balls are slightly crisp and golden on the outside. Serve while warm with a side of ranch dressing for dipping sauce! Enjoy!

*Tip:  This recipe makes several broccoli & cheese balls.  I suggest cutting the recipe in half or make the larger batch just in case you need a large helping.  I went ahead and made the large batch. Then, I froze the leftovers in my freezer in a gallon zip lock bag.  The next event I had and needed a quick side dish, I simply removed them from the freezer a few hours before I needed to warm them and set them out on the counter to unthaw some.  Then after unthawing some, I placed the balls into the oven at 350 for about 10 minutes.  They still tasted just as fresh as the first time I had cooked them!

From the heart of a local Youth Pastor, Jeremy Holland

It’s the most wonderful time of year! Most people are busy enjoying the season with family and friends. We celebrate many things this time of year. We celebrate time with family, enjoy the festivity of gift giving, and most importantly revisit the plan of God to live among us.

The Gospel of John presents the incarnate Son of God as the Word of God. Jesus is described as the Instrument of creation and the Author of life.

John 1:1-5 (New Living Translation)
1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.

Jesus is not only the Creator, He is also the source of Salvation.

John 1:10-14 (NLT)
10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Think about what we are celebrating at Christmas. We are celebrating the desire of God to view creation in an up-close and personal way. The Creator of the universe stepped into humanity to offer us the gift of adoption.

Some may think that the Christmas story is the only time that God stepped down among humanity, but there are actually several other accounts when it appears that God walked among man. One such instance occurs in Genesis 11. These events take place shortly after the Great Flood.

Genesis 11:1-9 (NLT)
At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. 2 As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there.
3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) 4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
5 But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! 7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
8 In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.

This story may seem like God was trying to hinder mankind from prospering, but since this was only a few years after the flood, it appears that God was actually trying to slow down man’s prideful march against God and toward sin.

First, notice that God came down. He visited mankind and interacted with them personally. His method of guidance in Genesis 11 might seem less personal than what we celebrate at Christmas, but God is always personal and just.

Second, God confused the languages and spread mankind around the globe with the goal of showing them their need for Him. They were growing in their accomplishments together, but they were not growing in their relationship with God. They were attempting to reach God on their own – in their own ability and with their own ingenuity. All of those efforts were empty and meaningless. No matter how great their physical accomplishments, their spiritual deficit would always be greater than their ability to atone.

Third, God’s visit was to establish the truth that man cannot reach God in his own ability.

John 14:6 (NLT)
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

The tower of Babel is a great example of humanity’s pursuit of independence from God. The builders decided to build a tower that reached to heaven in order to make a name for themselves. They were attempting to establish their own destiny without any reference to their creator. The irony is that in the middle of their attempt to reach God on their own, the Lord God came down to see the work of man. Human effort will never rise high enough or to the point where God doesn’t have to come down personally in order for us to be reunited with Him.

And that’s the story that was ultimately fulfilled in the Christmas story. God came down. God came down to offer humanity salvation. We have a great and mighty God that loves us enough to humble Himself in order that we might be saved. Have you placed your faith and your eternal destiny into the hands of the God who came down to offer salvation to you?

A little about Youth Pastor, Jeremy Holland…

Bulldogs Win In Teeth Clenching Overtime

By Megan Hecox

The Waldron Bulldogs made their way to Cedarville last night to take on the Pirates. Their intentions were to sink Cedarville’s ship and that’s just what they did. The Bulldogs walked away with a 65-61 overtime win and are now 3-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs are looking pretty good at taking their game all the way to the top. Peyton Brown brought in a whopping 37 points for the Bulldogs during their heart-stopping game. Drew Dozier and Gada Wagner each made 9 points while Isaac Villarreal secured 8. “It was a great high school basketball game and a great atmosphere. We overcame a lot of adversity and they shot the cover off the ball but we got stops when we had to have them to give ourselves a chance and to force overtime. In the end, we were able to put a win in the left column,” said Head Coach Joshua Brown.

The Lady Bulldogs played a good game last night against the Lady Pirates but had a little bit of trouble bringing in a victory. The Lady Bulldogs lost 60-24 but they will make this a learning experience, fix what needs to be fixed, and continue moving on. The girls are now 1-2 in conference play. Head Coach Josh Atchley said, “Cedarville has been very talented in girls basketball for the last few years. I think Coach Rackley has done a great job with their girls’ program. In order for us to be successful, we must play the game at our pace, take our shots, and get the stops that we can control!”

The Bulldogs will host the Lincoln Wolves on December 21st at 4 pm.

Coach Dake Continues Livin’ The Dream

By Megan Hecox

Mansfield Tigers Coach, Keith Dake, is the perfect example of the impact a great coach can have on a kid. For Coach Dake growing up, it was a local Harford native that made the biggest impact on his life. His name was Gary Ford. Gary showed Coach Dake exactly how big of an impact a coach could make, not only in athletes lives but in an entire community. Due to health issues, Gary was not able to be on staff, instead, being a full-time volunteer. Coach Dake shares his memories of Mr. Ford, “Anytime the gym was open, Gary was there giving instruction, life tips, building relationships, and sharing his seemingly endless supply of basketball knowledge. He was on the sideline for every game I played throughout my high school career and his impact on my life and seeing the impact he made in others, is ultimately what convinced me that I wanted to be a coach.”

Coach Keith Dake has been coaching for 7 years. He puts great pride and joy in what he does as a coach and working in the Mansfield school district. Coach Dake spent his youth days playing a wide variety of sports including basketball, baseball, golf, and track. The one thing that Coach Dake loves about coaching is the relationships. He is able to connect with so many people, from the student body to community members, on a daily basis and form great relationships of all ages, whether they are 12 or 70. My favorite parts of coaching would have to be just having the ability to compete, make strategic plans, and watching them unfold in live action. I have always been a very competitive person, whether I am playing basketball or checkers, anything short of a win has never been good enough for me,” says Coach Dake.

The Jr High and Sr High Tigers will be heading to Elkins tonight December 18th, to take on the Elks with game time starting at 4 pm.
