28th Annual Hartford Songfest Planned

The 28th Annual Hartford Gospel Music “Hills of Fame” Songfest is scheduled to begin at 6 pmon the evening of Mothers Day, May 13th, at Faith Chapel at 306 State Hwy. 45 in Hartford. Hartford is located 30 miles south of Fort Smith via Highway 45, and 20 miles east of Poteau via Oklahoma Highway 83.  308 State Hwy. 45.
The annual evening of inspirational gospel music commemorates the Hartford Music Co., first owned and operated there in Hartford. The Hartford Music Co. published such well-known songs as “I’ll Fly Away,” written by Albert E. Brumley, “Victory in Jesus,” written by E.M. Bartlett, and “Just a Rose Will Do,” written by J.A. McClung.  All three of these famous writers have been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and all at some point were owners of the Hartford Music Co.
Special entertainers for the evening will be Mark 209, the only southern gospel quartet from Nashville.  The group relates Mark 209 to the Country Music Capital this way–“If you go to Nashville and you want to go to the Ryman Theatre or the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Southern Baptist Convention Home Office, you have to get off on exit 209. It is the hub for all of Nashville. So what better place to be from, than mile-marker 209. So that’s where we got the name.”
Outstanding local talent will also be featured.  Admission is FREE

Doggone Main Street Parking

By Tammy Moore Teague
Charlie Smith, owner of Furr Baby’s Grooming shop, was present Thursday night to address the city council.
He voiced his concern over parking issues in the front of his business. “People park in front of my shop and walk down to
The pharmacy,” Smith said. This, he went on to add, keeps his customers from being able to get close parking to his shop. “I have to be able to get the animals in.”
Smith proposed a designated parking spot for his business only. He was encouraged by the council to erect signage on the front of his building stating such and they also added they will work towards a resolution to the problem.

MHS Graduate Coaches Bearcats to State Championship

Coach Whit Overton, a 2004 Mansfield High School graduate, shows the state championship trophies his Booneville weightlifting team won recently at Alma.

It was always on his mind to be a state champion. A solid high school career at Mansfield High School brought great memories but never a state title. So, Whit Overton went into coaching hungry for that elusive state championship. On Saturday, April 21 the dream became reality.

Overton, a 2004 MHS graduate, took his Booneville Bearcats to Alma for the 27th Annual Arkansas High School Weightlifting Championship. When the clank of heavy iron settled, it was Booneville taking the class 4A state title along with the overall state championship as well.

“This is a big deal,” Overton said with an enthusiastic grin. “These guys have been working hard. I’m so proud of them. It’s great for these guys. It’s also the first time Booneville won the overall, so we’re excited about that too.”

The Bearcats won the class 4A title by lifting a team combined 5,140 pounds. That number was the sum of 10 different weight classifications.

Bearcat Austin Foster from the 132 pound division lifted an astounding 460 pounds for an individual victory. Teammate Landen Beckett in the 123 class lifted 360 pounds for a silver medal in his group. The other eight competitors excelled as well giving the coach his first state trophy.

“We had a couple of guys set power clean bests and bench press bests,” explained Overton. “All 10 of our guys made weight, so we didn’t have to worry about that. They worked so hard, it’s crazy.”

“I knew we’d be close,” said the coach as he reflected on a feeling the overall championship was within their grasp before the meet even started. “I didn’t want to tell them until we got here and got started. I used the possibility as a little extra motivation.”

Overton began his coaching career at West Fork. A brief stop in his hometown Mansfield led to a stint in Lavaca before he answered a call to join Booneville this summer.

At Booneville, the former Tiger is responsible for special teams with defensive duties for the football squads. He coaches junior boys track, and is the offseason and weight room coordinator.

It’s in the weight room that Overton implemented a version of the Bigger, Faster, Stronger Program. Keeping up with computerized weight sheets and overseeing the progress of it’s athletes allowed the first year Bearcat the opportunity to build his 10 man team.

The hunt for Whit Overton’s first state championship has ended. The Mansfield alum doesn’t have to dream about winning state titles anymore. He will soon have a state championship ring on his finger reminding him that dreams really do come true.

Lady Tigers Get Win at Quad City Track

Labeled the “Quad City” meet some years ago, Mansfield has played host to the smaller regular season home meet as a way to get local players a last minute chance to qualify to the state track competition. Because coaches go searching for such a meet, Mansfield tends to get calls for an invitation that expands the field beyond the indicated four schools.

This year, the Quad City ballooned to ten teams. Mansfield, the host for the night, took first place in the women’s team standings for their first team victory of the season.

The Lady Tigers have had good performances this season. However, a third place finish has been their highest among a plethora of events so far this season. A fifth place finish at the earlier, larger Tiger Relays (24 teams) was also on their resume. But, first place has alluded the core group up until the April 16 event.

Sophomore Delilah McKusker was the breakout star of the night for Mansfield’s women. The second year hurdler won the 300m hurdles in 55.13. To that point it was the tenth grader’s fastest finish of the year. It also placed her as the second ranked hurdler in the conference.

McKusker also anchored two relay races for the Lady Tigers. They finished second and fifth respectively in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays.

For the men, it was Jaicy Griffin that looked the part of dominate performer. That is until the sophomore tweaked a knee during a large leap in the long jump.

Griffin went 20’ 5.5” in the long jump for the win. However, he was hobbled a bit as he exited the sand. For precautionary measures the Mansfield staff closed the remainder of his schedule. Currently the team is awaiting reports of his availability before conference play begins on April 25.

Seniors Megan Rose and Devon Pyles continued to be the top Tigers for the women and men Mansfield teams. Both distance runners, the two completed 4 mile schedules for their respectively groups.

Rose won the 1600m run in 6:18.58. She was also the champion in the 3200m run at 13:14.33. A pair of third place finishes in the 800m run and 4x800m relay polished off her meet production.

Pyles posted two third place finishes and a fourth for the men. He was the bronze medalist in the 1600m and 800m runs. He was the fourth best runner in the 3200m run after an unusually short period of rest. Earlier he was part of a fourth place 4x800m relay.

Jake Smith, Curtis Griffin, Devon Pyles, and Joris Felius manned the 4x800m men’s team. Corrina Wesley, Alyssa Berry, Lennon Woods, and Megan Rose peopled the women’s distance team.

Sophomore Jacob Brown turned in his highest place of the season at the discus ring. He tossed the saucer like implement 103’ 11.5” for fourth place.

Fellow sophomore Blayne Bryant went 8’ 00” in only his second pole vault competition of the year. He was seventh among 14 jumpers.

Garrett Wilson came over from baseball to contribute to the boys’ team. He was part of two relays and ran the 100m dash.

Lennon Woods ran the 300m hurdles for the first time this year. Trying to create depth for a small senior Lady Tiger squad, the sophomore took on the challenge of the 8 barrier race. The results were positive as the first timer finished fourth in the race at 58.73 seconds.

Addison Goetz did a similar exploration over at the triple jump pit. She made her best mark in the triple jump at 25’ 1.5” in only her second try this year.

Mansfield sent a handful of players to Southside on April 19 at the McDonald’s Relays. They did not compete as a full squad against the mostly 7A competition.

Savage Storm Welcomes Mansfield’s Megan Rose

Mansfield’s Megan Rose readies to sign a national letter of intent to run cross country and track at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Rose is accompanied by her parents Jeff and Heidi Rose.

The decision has been made. A lengthy recruiting period that began last summer is finally over. Mansfield senior cross country and track specialist Megan Rose is taking her talents to Durant, Oklahoma. On Tuesday, April 17, the Lady Tiger distance runner officially signed her NCAA letter of intent to join the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm.

A cheerful Rose awaits her moment to sign with OSU.

“I’m going to do track and cross country,” Rose said. “I feel very blessed to go. Southeastern has a diverse track team; they get to go all over the country.”

Rose had her pick as far a small school opportunities to run next season. Several Arkansas schools pitched their programs hoping to sign the soon to be Mansfield graduate. In the end, it was the attention the Savage Storm gave her during cross country season that won out.

“I got a lot of offers from instate,” Rose explained. “For me, it’s (Southeastern) the best option to be the highest on their team.”

Megan’s family has been the foundation of her support and stands beside her and this monumental decision.

Rose was concerned with not just running but the academic side as well. Her future plans are to be in secondary education and one day become a coach. Southeastern has a solid reputation for teacher education.

Rose confessed to the junior high players, a group that she mentors as part of Coach John Mackey’s student volunteer program, that she wants to be a state champion. If she doesn’t get one as a player, she’s determined to get one as a coach.

Rose entered high school behind a long list of Mansfield state championships. It was her dream to be on the wall as a member of a state title team. As her final high school season comes to a close, that possibility seems somewhat remote. Her current Lady Tiger track team is the smallest Mansfield has fielded in years.

Not to be concerned with circumstances out of her control, Rose meanwhile fights for better times and improved performances. Her most recent success was completing a 4 mile schedule of events at her final regular season home meet. Positive individual results helped lead her team to their first overall victory of the season.

During Rose’s senior campaign she has established new benchmarks for herself in nearly ever category. Those include: 800m – 2:56.44, 1600m – 6:06.76, 3200m – 12:53.44, and 5K – 19:42.00.

An unquestionable leader of the Lady Tigers, and its most respected runner known by area coaches and athletes alike is one of the most decorated players in the Mansfield senior class.

Rose has a laundry list of notable athletic accomplishments. Some of those efforts include being a 4-time district cross country champion, 4-time River Valley XC All-Star, 2017 River Valley All-Star overall champion, 4-time indoor state track medalist, and a 4-time outdoor state track qualifier.

“Megan has run more miles, and created more smiles than any other player currently on campus,” Mackey stated. “She deserves this. She did it through hard work, academic excellence, and a very supportive family. We look forward to seeing her succeed at the next level.”
