Enterprising Athletes Quietly Organize Fundraising Effort

Surprise donation… Alyssa Frasher, Amanda Lasavath, Kami Crabtree, and Harleigh Mars present Coach John Mackey with a monetary donation for the Mansfield track team. The four Lady Tiger athletes organized their own fundraiser to surprise the coach and the team.

Many a Mansfield Middle School student got a chance to rock and roll last Friday night. A fundraising dance held at the MMS old gym was organized exclusively by four enterprising Lady Tiger athletes with a two-fold objective in mind. One, the eighth grade entrepreneurs wanted a chance for classmates and others to enjoy a bit of fun before the Christmas break. Two, the group secretly wanted to raise money as a surprise gift for their athletic program.

Mission accomplished! Both fun and funds were generated to the delight of students dancing the night away, and to the team they wished to support.

On the following Monday, the four enterprising girls amazed their coach by presenting him a deposit slip for $529.50.

“This is for the track team,” announced a collective vocal from Harleigh Mars, Amanda Lasavath, Alyssa Frasher, and Kami Crabtree. “We did this for you and the track team.”

It was a jaw dropping moment confessed John Mackey, Mansfield’s head track coach and recipient of the news.

“I was floored with the donation,” said Mackey. “I had no idea these young ladies were up to so much good. I remember they asked me weeks ago if they could miss a workout to set up for a dance. I want them to be well rounded and volunteer for other organizations so I said yes. I had no idea they were secretly plotting to help our own team.”

Mars, Vasavath, Frasher, and Crabtree were the four main athletes in charge. They secured donations of food and drink, organized the use of facilities, coaxed a collection of chaperons, and found the entertainment. Middle school teachers Summer Martin, and Malinda Wesley assisted the girls in their mission.

“It’s funny,” stated Mackey as he reflected on a team building exercise some of the athletes attended this summer. “Harleigh was with us when we talked about random acts of kindness this past summer. It must have meant something to her. How cool is that, that several months later she was involved in such an act?”

Track and field, one of the most decorated of all the sports at Mansfield over the past decade, will certainly put the funds to good use. At press time, Coach was already checking the list for needs and wants. Just for good measure since it’s that time of year, he may even check it twice.

Boil Order Issued for Mansfield Residents

The Arkansas Department of Health has instructed Mansfield Mayor to issue an immediate boil order for the residents of Mansfield.
Winds from storms last night (December 4th) damaged the top of the water tower resulting in a possible threat to the water supply.
A Mansfield resident, and City Council Member, Rick McDaniel called to inform us of the boil order.

Times Record Chooses Two Lady Tigers for Best of Best Recipients

Best of Best Prep All-Stars Megan Rose and Rylea Weaver are excited to named to the Times Record list for their athletic successes this fall sports season. Rose was selected along with nine other cross country runners from the area while Weaver was among a handful of volleyball players.

Last year, news publication Times Record began a new series in which they recognized the “best of the best” prep stars across the River Valley and into Oklahoma. Selected exclusively through the observations and intellect of the Times’ sports writers and editors, this prestigious list covered ever sport from Golf to Track. In the spring of 2017, Mansfield had six athletes reach that inaugural list.

This school year with only a few sports having been completed, The Times’ people have already announced some of this year’s River Valley Prep Best of the Best All Stars. Included so far from Mansfield are Lady Tiger athletes Rylea Weaver and Megan Rose.

Weaver is a multi-sport star that has excelled in volleyball for two high school seasons. It is in this discipline that the 16 year old junior made the list. An outside hitter that stockpiled nearly ever Mansfield volleyball award a year ago, Weaver continued the trend this past volleyball campaign.

Rose, a two sport star and college recruit, earned her invitation by way of an ultra-successful cross country season. The 17 year old senior won several individual 5K races throughout the year including her fourth district title, and a River Valley All-Star title.

Both players will soon receive an invitation to a formal banquet to be held sometime in May. Hundreds of athletes, coaches, and notable sports figures from the high school, college, and professional level will be in attendance. Last year’s banquet included recently retired Dallas Cowboy Darren McFadden as the keynote speaker.

Weaver blushed as she reflected on the surprise announcement.

“I couldn’t believe it,” exclaimed Weaver. “It was crazy. I think my teammates contributed a lot to my success. I’m so happy and thankful.”

Rose was similarly surprised as she too heard news of the highly regarded honor.

“It’s such a good honor,” beamed Rose. “It’s a blessing to have the chance to go to such a big event. I’m very humbled by the recognition. It makes for another good achievement in my running career.”

So far only the names of high school prep stars that have participated in volleyball, cross country, and tennis this school year have been released. Other sports will come as their respective seasons end. Watch for an announcement around Christmas time for the football River Valley Best lineup.

CONGRATULATIONS, Ladies!

Four Tigers Make All-Conference

Despite having a tough season, the Mansfield Tiger Football team walked away with a focus on next year, and four of those team members were chosen for multiple All-Conference titles, and acknowledgements. Pictured (left to right James Fry, Brennan James, Jaicy Griffin, and Nate Maness.

Brennan James (QB,WR,Safety)
Brennan had over 1000 yards of total offense (Passing, Rushing, Receiving) with a total of 10  touchdowns. On defense, James had 27 tackles on with 4 interceptions.
“Brennan has been the ultimate Senior. He has led the way in some dark and tough times for this program and that just shows what type of character he has. He is a fantastic player, capable of excelling wherever needed him to play. He works hard and always seemed to make big plays on both sides of the football. He will be tough to replace.” – Tiger Head Coach, Craig Bentley
2nd Team 4-3A All-Conference
James Fry (Corner)
Fry found himself in the center of all activity, and was all over the field each game collecting a total of 42 tackles, and 7 deflected passes.
“James made it his mission to become a better player in the off season and I can honestly say they he was not outworked a single day. He came in and increased his strength and technique and he became our best cover corner. He worked extremely hard to fix the mistakes that hampered him the year before and he became a complete player who could cover as well as tackle. He lead by example! – Tiger Head Coach, Craig Bentley
Jaicy Griffin (WR/Safety)
Griffin’s speed, and agility was second to none among Tiger competitor’s. For his efforts, he collected a total of 87 tackles, 1 sack,  2 deflected passes, and  2 interceptions. His offensive prowess gave him a total of 452 yards receiving, 3 touchdowns, and 154 yards rushing.
“Jaicy made dynamic plays on offense and defense. He plays every day like its the last time he is stepping on that field, whether it be practice or a game. Full out effort with a great attitude, that’s what we strive for in all of our players. He seemed to be in on every tackle because for that very reason. He is a big play threat on offense. We are glad to have him back the next 2 years.” – Tiger Head Coach, Craig Bentley
Nate Maness (OL/DL)
“Nate had a huge impact on both the offensive and defensive lines. He is one of the strongest players in the conference and very quick and agile for his size. He excelled in pulling in the run game and as the season went on became a stalwart in the middle of our defensive line. He stayed focused throughout the year during challenging times and it paid off. There is not one kid, over the past two years, who has made bigger strides both on and off the field than Nate.” – Tiger Head Coach, Craig Bentley
