MHS Senior Runner Spotlight – Natalie Brewer

Editor’s Note: With the senior high cross country state championships less than a month away, we’ll take the next few weeks to spotlight some of the senior athletes running for the Mansfield Tigers.

New to the running world is senior Lady Tiger Natalie Brewer. Primarily a volleyball player throughout her younger athletic years, it was this summer that one of Mansfield’s most consistent runners this season decided to join the cross country team.

“You have to have endurance,” said Brewer with a slight grin. “I didn’t know there would be this much running. But, after I get done I feel really good. We run a lot but it makes me happy. It’s about achievement and accomplishment.”

Brewer joined the cross country crew in July. It was then that the core of the team both junior and senior high began the conditioning runs to compete this fall. As a beginner, she was in the early level one group. Quickly she elevated herself into the high level ones and has been running with the level two regularly now.

“We didn’t know what to expect when Natalie first joined,” said John Mackey her coach this season. “I always thought she was athletic and could make a runner. When she was younger she didn’t have the mentality for it. But, this summer she jumped in and real embraced what we were doing. It’s been a really positive fit for the team and Natalie. She’s accepted tough training and has been a real bright spot for the team.”

Brewer has been among the top five scorers for Mansfield’s senior girls nearly every time out this cross country schedule. There have been times she has delivered in the top two as far as performance.

“I feel good about my progress,” exclaimed Brewer. “I’d like to maybe even qualify for the All-Star team at the end of the year. I’ve hit the 25’s and would like to get down to the 24’s or even 23’s.”

On her first full 5K race, Brewer completed the nearly 3.1 mile course in just over 27 minutes. Her low for the season came at Acorn in 25:21. With the Southwest Regional scheduled for that same venue, it might just be an opportunity for the senior newcomer to hit her goal.

“I like cross country because it’s much about the individual,” stated Brewer. “It’s a team sport too but you can really focus on your own performance. We try to support one another and pull each other along. That makes the meets so much fun when we can do it together.”

Brewer will soon be making her first trip to the state meet. In fact, it is her first state championship in any sport since she has been participating in athletics.

“I think she will do terrific,” expressed Mackey. “Natalie is a wonderful person. She’s very smart, and holds herself to high standards. She will work to be better. I look forward to the results.”

Mansfield medal winners at Greenwood XC

Because of a quirk in the schedule, Mansfield’s cross country teams had little rest last week. Two meets where on the schedule with only a day’s rest in between.
Mansfield traveled to Mena on a Tuesday and followed that up with a trip to Greenwood on Thursday. Both venues provided the group with the opportunity to succeed. Collectively the membership hauled home 15 medals from the two meet sandwich.
Megan Rose, Lennon Woods, Faith Rainwater, Harleigh Mars, McKenzie Griffin, and Ethan Chapman each secured a medal at both places. Natalie Brewer, Tyler Escalante, and Joris Felius all earned hardware at Greenwood.
“The players responded better than expected,” said John Mackey the Mansfield long distance coach. “They didn’t complain but you could tell the second time out was a chore. But, like they said it was a chance to get rewarded rather than practice. They were going to run either way.”
Highlighting the week was Tiger ace Megan Rose. The senior turned in a career best at Mena’s vacant golf course turned into a 5K path. Her time was 20:41. A deeper look into at the school record books may indicate a new record may have been established.
McKenzie Griffin also had her best day at Mena. The cooler rain soaked day allowed her to move into the top spot for the junior team. After a super summer season, the Tiger eighth grader has struggled somewhat in the personal medal count department. The Mena course afforded her the path to the team’s top spot.
Faith Rainwater was the junior girl’s top performer in the Greenwood meet. Joris Felius was the best Tiger in the men’s race at Greenwood’s Bell Park. Ethan Chapman commanded the top attention for his efforts in the junior high boy’s squad for Mansfield.
Tyler Escalante earned his first accolade this season for the junior boys’ team. He has consistently been in the top five for the younger team since joining the team late into the season.

Waldron Falls to Pottsville

In their previous meeting, Waldron got away by the skin of its teeth with a 35 – 34 win over Pottsville. The rematch, however, was a total reversal. Waldron suffered a painful 42 – 21 defeat to Pottsville.

The win got Hackett up to 4-1. The defeat kept Decatur winless and dragged its record down to 0-5.
The teams are out to raise these records in their next games. Hackett will battle it out against Danville on Friday at 7:00 PM.

Teachers WIN 6th Annual Kickball Game

The Mansfield Middle School Teachers and students took the field Friday, October 6th with their annual kickball game.  The 8th grade students put on a brilliant display of persistence and dedication, but fell short.  The 8th grade students took an early lead, but were unable to hold the strong kicking leg of Middle School teacher / coach Josh Bryan and Coach Keith Dake.  The game was competitive with outstanding plays made by 8th grade Austin Carlton registering multiple outs.
The game was officiated by 6th grade student Kynslee Ward and 7th grade student Cassidy Carlton.  They were on top of their game and just needed glasses to complete the ensemble as officials.  The 8th grade students fought ferociously, but the long time Middle School teaching legend Kandis Howard refused to let the 8th graders register their first career win versus the teachers.  Mrs. Howard reevaluated the strategy and used the speed and versatility of Mrs. Renea Bryan and Mrs. Renee Crelia to move runners and push scores home for the teachers.
The only scare of the day was a close play with Coach Bryan McKay streaking down the first baseline at a lightning pace of approximately 3 miles per hour, which is 4.83 kilometers per hour if you are from Canada.  Some say Coach McKay accelerated to 4 miles per hour or 6.44 kilometers per hour for his science class.
Dalton Pettigrew put forth an outstanding defensive effort, as did 8th grade student Kiara Thomas.  Aaron Brewer made a few nice kicks and great plays in the field, along with Wesley Wilson, Haylee Helms, Mikeal Harrison, but the one thing we learned is that school is always in session for Mansfield Middle School.  On October 6th instead of learning curriculum, students learned team work, communication, strategies, and tools for success.
The teachers of Mansfield Middle School taught the 8th graders one more lesson before the end of the day and that is the humility that comes along with winning.

Mansfield Middle School Spotight – Joanna James

Mrs. Joanna James is a new cook and cafeteria worker at Mansfield Middle School.  Mrs. James is an alumni of Mansfield High School and love Italian food.
Mrs. James favorite move is “Gone with the Wind”.  Mrs. James is passionate about cooking, she spends countless hours baking and cooking.  The hours she is not cooking and baking Mrs. James is spending time with her four children, working at the church, and watching the Mansfield Tigers Win.
Mrs. James states her happiest moment is when she married her best friend and now husband Ryan James and her favorite colors are red and Razorback red.  Mrs. James describes herself as a “Pastor’s Wife”, working as youth leader.  She produced multiple party and wedding cakes that have been in shows, Taste of Fort Smith, and Taste of Crawford County.  We want to thank Mrs. James for her care and concern for our students at Mansfield Middle School.
The students have enjoyed Mrs. James smile and her care for the students.  One Middle School student, Alyssa James, says “She is the greatest cook that I know.”  Students have been excited to see Mrs. James work along with long time employees Treva Edwards and April Robles.  When we say long time we mean long time with Mrs. Treva Edwards.
We at Mansfield Middle School would like to thank Mrs. James for her time and care for our students at Mansfield Middle School.  We also want to thank our tremendous students and parents for all of their support to help us grow lifelong learners at MMS.
