MJH Cross Country Cubs Finish Magazine in First

The junior girls cross country team at Mansfield is young. So young in fact that only seventh and eighth graders traveled with the team on its trip to Magazine on Thursday, September 14. However, being young didn’t stop the Tiger cubs from winning their division of the annual 1.5 mile race.

Behind plaque obtaining performances by Faith Rainwater, Olivia Bouse, and Jadelyn Wood; Mansfield took home the first place team plaque. Split into divisions after the overall medals were distributed, Mansfield bested Greenland for the team title.

Rainwater ran her best race so far in the early season. The eighth grader kicked it into another gear down the stretch to led the Tiger qualifiers. Her 10:33 time was the tenth fastest finish among over one hundred runners.

The performance by Rainwater gave her a top-ten medal as well as the third place plaque in her division.

Bouse, a Mansfield seventh grader, finished one second behind her older teammate. After closing fast into what seemed the medal margin, Bouse was barely edged by her own teammate just before the line.

Bouse was the eleventh fastest runner overall with a time of 10:34. That measurement did however push her into fourth place among divisional plaque winners.

Wood, another Lady Tiger seventh grader, climbed the ranks of the Mansfield qualifiers to finish third best on the team. A week ago the rookie runner was the team’s number five scorer at the Fort Smith Invitational.

Completing the half-mile shorter course at Magazine, Wood ran the race in 10:52. The mark was 17th overall. To the surprise of the excited runner, it was seventh best among the 3A-4A participants for a plaque earning reward.

Rounding out Mansfield’s top five finishers were McKenzie Griffin and Harleigh Mars. Completing the course and serving as displacers for the Tigers were Lita Hecox, Shasta Christopher, and Bethany Sartin.

Among the Mansfield junior boys, Ethan Chapman was again the top Tiger. For the second week in a row, Chapman finished among the overall medal winners.

At the Magazine Rattler Run, Chapman blazed the 1.5 mile course in 8 minutes and 21 seconds. The mark was the tenth fastest time among nearly 130 runners. It was also the third best mark in the 3A-4A division.

Overall, Mansfield’s boys dropped off the pace a bit from last week’s Ft. Smith run. Two of the Tiger’s faster players were obligated to the football contest going on at the same time.

Mansfield’s top five runners at Magazine were Chapman, Tyler Escalante, Levi Escalante, Darryl Little, and Ashton Hinkle. Tommy Phang was the lone displacer off the Tiger team.

Tyler Escalante ran 9:20 for 33rd place. Levi Escalante went 9:21 for 34th. Added to Chapman’s 8:21, the list of top three Tiger runners included all eighth graders.

Mansfield seventh graders enjoy a moment with cross country first place plaque.

College Scout Watches as Rose Runs Magazine

Among the fans in attendance at the Magazine Rattler Run last Thursday was the head cross country coach from the University of the Ozarks. There to watch local long distance runners form around the area, the Ozarks’ head man had Mansfield senior Megan Rose on his must see list.

Jeremy Provence is the man in charge of the U of O’s cross country teams. Sometime after Rose completed the unusually short 1.5 mile run for high school girls, the college coach made it a point to stop by and have a conversation with Rose.

“It was pretty cool to have a college coach in attendance,” said Mansfield Coach John Mackey. “He told Megan he had been tracking her career online for the past few seasons. He knew her career best time and was aware of her progress over the years.”

To date Rose has had correspondence with coaches from Hendrix, Lyons, Arkansas Tech, Ozarks, and a small school down in Louisiana. Since her senior season started two weeks ago, this was the first time an university representative has gotten to see the Tiger product in actual competition since last year’s state meet.

Rose was clocked running the 1.5 mile race in 9 minutes and 38 seconds. The measurement was fifth among the nearly one hundred runners competing in the senior girls race.

Typically, Rose and her teammates run competition races that cover a 5K distance or 3.1 miles. The shorter race was used at Magazine because of the extremely hot temperatures that popped back into the area at week’s end.

“The shorter races aren’t Megan’s best events,” stated Mackey. “She likes the longer runs. She can maintain a high level pace for a long, long time. She’s not as fast as many of the other runners over a short distance. But, few can keep her pace over the long haul.”

Rose won the Fort Smith Invitational back on September 9. That course was the traditional 5K distance. At Magazine, her mark over the more sprint like shorter event was fifth overall and third in her division.

Mansfield senior Natalie Brewer, a first time cross country runner, made a memorable debut by placing 30th among the large number of entries. Teammate Corrina Wesley followed directly behind at 31st.

MHS cross country senior Lady Tigers wait the start of the Magazine Rattler Run. From left to right are Addison Goetz, Bree George, Lennon Woods, Jesse George, Megan Rose, Corrina Wesley, and Natalie Brewer.

As Wesley explained it, the door for her to cross ahead of others was opened when Brewer made a surge near the finish line.

“That girl ahead of us gave up the fight after Natalie passed her near the end,” explained Wesley to her coach. “She slowed down when she couldn’t hold off Natalie. I slipped right past her as well.”

Mansfield sophomore Lennon Woods had her first race of the season at Magazine. The River Valley All-Star from a season ago, had been hampered by shin splints. She missed several days of training and the team’s first meet at Ben Geren Park.

“Lennon has been bothered by soreness in her legs,” revealed Mackey. “This was her first hard run in about a week and a half. I thought she did well for her first time out this season.”

Woods was Mansfield’s second best performer at the Rattler Run. The sophomore rising star ran 10:32 for 25th place overall.

Jesse George completed the Lady Tiger’s top five scorers. Newcomer Addison Goetz and veteran Bree George filled the displacer roles.

On the men’s side, the Tigers entered foreign exchange student Joris Felius and senior Devon Pyles.

According to their coach, both have been concentrating on the 5k distance and the pace required for that longer race. The short sprint of the men’s 1.5 mile race was run at a level the pair was not used to.

“It’s a little misleading when you get thrown into a sprinter’s race,” explained Mackey. “The muscle memory is different. Our guys have built a body clock for the longer distance. It’s hard for them to rev it up on the short sprint.”

Felius finished 26 overall among a large crowd of runners. His time was 8:28. Pyles crossed in 38th place. His stopwatch clicked at 8:40.

The “WHITE OUT” went off with a bang! Clouds of white filled the air as students cheered on. An amazing sight to behold.

Waldron Bulldogs Suffer First Loss

Story by Konnor McKay
If you weren’t in Mena, Arkansas Friday night, you missed an electric atmosphere!
As it has been over a decade since the Bulldogs of Waldron have defeated the Mena Bearcats, this years story may be similar in the win/loss column. But on that field, you seen some heart shown from each sideline that you wouldn’t trade for anything.
Waldron began the game on defense against the number 10 ranked team in class 4-A, The Mena Bearcats. And after driving down the field in the first three minutes of action, Waldron’s Matthew Poor steps up big on third and goal for a tackle in the backfield to force Mena’s special teams to attempt a field goal which went through the uprights.
Waldron struggling to get anything going on offense is forced to punt which was returned for a touchdown for Mena, making the score a quick 10-0 lead for the Bearcats. At this point things already looking grim for the Bulldogs, but they weren’t done playing yet.
Levi Hayden comes up big for the bulldog offense running a 79 yard touchdown. Mena puts up another score and makes it 18-6 to end the first quarter of action. The second quarter was interesting with Waldron recovering two defensive forced fumbles, one of those recoveries coming from Waldron’s Gerardo Lopez.
After two more touchdowns were added for the Bearcats, Waldron again shows signs of life when Cole Huddleston plunges his way into the end zone, along with Jarrod Starr adding another score to make the halftime score 33-19 in Mena’s favor. The second half things quickly got interesting.
The fans on The Waldron side were as ecstatic as ever. With much momentum, Waldron quickly pulls to within 2 points of the Bearcats making the score 33-31. One score added by Trey Williams and the other coming from Levi Hayden. Waldron just didn’t quite have enough to grab that victory that was so close you could taste it, Mena in the fourth quarter pulls away with a 47-31 lead and that’s where the score would stay.
It was a well fought game and a lot of players, got a lot of good experience.
Waldron drops to 2-1 on the season and Mena goes to 3-0. Waldron will face the Hillbillies of Ozark In Waldron at Bulldog stadium this coming Friday night. This starts conference play, and the road to the playoffs! So come, wear your orange and black, and be prepared for a bulldog takeover! Kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Tigers take the WIN against Lincoln Wolves

Congratulations to #5 Ethan Stovall (overall), #70 Nathan Maness (offensive), #2 James Fry (defensive) and #20 Will Meadows (special teams) for being selected the Mansfield Football Players of the Game.

“”Big win on the road for us. We had an outstanding first half, but knew the rest of the game was going to be a dog fight. Offense really rebounded and played their most complete game of the year. Need to clean up some areas of our special teams. Defense had some big stops and turnovers and made plays when we needed to. We need to learn how to close out drives when we are defending on 3rd and 4th and long, that will be an emphasis going forward. Proud of the fight and grit we showed to close out the game and get a big victory on the road against a 4A football team. New season starts now, we want to build off this momentum going forward into conference.” – Head Coach Craig Bentley

Mansfield will battle it out at home against Paris this Friday at 7:00 PM, and will be the Tiger’s Homecoming.

Young runners show early promise at Fort

Both the Mansfield junior high long distance teams showed positive results at the first race of the season at Ben Geren Park in Fort Smith on September 9. Not quite reaching trophy status, the pair of teams did take third place for both the girls and boys races.

The Tiger junior boys were oh so close to a second place plaque. In fact that were not very far away from the top trophy either.

Mansfield’s young team of 3K runners totaled 74 points in the team standings among small school entries. Subiaco Academy lead the way with 60 points while Magazine barley edged out the Tigers for second place with 73 points.

First year runner, Ethan Chapman, surprised with a medal winning run around the approximate 2 mile course. The eighth grade player was steady throughout completing the two loop race in 12:48. That timing was good enough for 6th place among the class 1A-4A runners.

Mansfield’s top scoring boys were Chapman, Steven Perez, Dru Buckner, Levi Escalante, and Ashton Hinkle.

Tommy Phang and Darryl Little finished as displacers for the MJH team. In fact, it was Phang’s mid-level finish that broke a tie between Mansfield and Trinity who also tallied 74 points.

Mansfield’s junior girls compete at the Fort Smith Invitational 3k race.

In the girls race, McKenzie Griffin was the Lady Tigers top finisher. The eight grader completed the same course as the boys in 15:33.9. She was one place away from a top ten medal.

Rookie runner Olivia Bouse showed her worth as she led the Tiger women for most of the race. Teammate Griffin passed the seventh grader in the final 500 meters to set the pair only seconds apart.

Harleigh Mars, Faith Rainwater, and Jadelyn Wood completed the Lady Tiger scoring five.

Lita Hecox, Shasta Christopher, and Bethany Sartin rounded out the junior girls roster for Mansfield at the Fort Smith race.

Waldron took the top spot in the small school division with a very experienced group of runners. The Lady Bulldogs totaled 22 points for the win.

Trinity landed in second place with 48 points while Mansfield closed in third with 72.
