After an intense and hard-fought baseball and softball season, the Waldron Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are ready to strike it up in the 3A-4 District Tournament which is being played in Booneville. The Bulldogs finished their regular season with a 5-14 total play record and 4-6 in conference placing them as the #3 seed. The boys will be facing #4 seeded Charleston on Tuesday, April 27 at 4 pm. Pitcher, Blake Owens leads on the mound with 3 wins for the Diamond Dogs followed by Matt Brigance and Noah Patrick with 1 each. Brigance along with Drake Carnley holds the two highest batting averages while Carnley also leads in stolen bases. And leading the Bulldogs in fielding is Caden Fuller and Bryson Bailey.
The Lady Bulldogs finished conference play with a 3-7 record and will also be walking into District Play as the #3 seed. The girls will take on #4 seeded Cedarville on Tuesday, April 27 at 4 pm. When it comes to batting averages, Saige Mahar holds a .454, Ashtyn Moore has a .389, and Ashton Young is at .382. On base percentages have Mahar at .593, Young at .500, and Moore at .492. Mahar also takes the lead in stolen bases and RBI with 13 and 12 respectively trailed by Jayden Manning and Rheagan Sanford with 10 stolen bases each and Young and Sanford with 11 RBI apiece. And logging a whopping 108 strikeouts for the season is Ashton Young. “We have made some adjustments to our lineup both defensively and offensively in hopes to shake some things up,” stated Coach Bailey Moore. “We have struggled to find a groove this year but we have started to see some sparks of life with the new changes. We are hoping to catch fire just in time for the tournament. The potential is there and as a coach, you can only hope the kids see themselves the way you do. If they dig deep and find their fight, they will have success!”

The shortened season got even shorter as the Mansfield Tiger track teams enrolled in their final tuneups before conference play will begin on April 27. The thin clads of Mansfield made their way to Van Buren and Fort Smith Southside this past week for their final regular-season meets.
Enlisting in only partial individual event schedules, both the MHS men and women found a modicum of success. Specifically, two throwers further cemented their pre-qualification standards. One hurdler inched her way towards the top of the state rankings.
Tiger Bri Sanderson scratched another notch on his thrower’s belt at Van Buren on April 19. The 2A-4 District leader pressed the 12 pound shot 45’ 0” into the landing sector to meet the pre-qualification standard to state.
Class 2A shot put throwers must equal the latest five-year average of the third-place state mark to gain early admission into the state meet. Sanderson surpassed that 43’ 11” mark easily with his 45-foot heave.
To date, Sanderson has pre-qualified in both the shot and discus to the May 5 scheduled state meet in Gurdon. The 6’ 4” senior currently ranks number one in Class 2A for the discus at 155’ 6”. He is listed second in the shot by only two inches thanks to the Van Buren production.
Brooke Wright, a senior thrower off the women’s team, hit her personal record in the discus at the Van Buren meet. Matter of fact, the state’s second-ranked discus thrower broke her previous best measurement twice on the night.
Wright went over 100 feet for the first time in her career at Van Buren. She flung the 1kg discus 100’ 10” mark in the first round. She then went 101’ 3” in the finals for her career highwater standard. Both measures solidified her early entry into the state meet by nearly 10 feet.
The list of Mansfield seniors strengthening their resumes continued to grow as the Tigers made the trip to Fort Smith Southside two days later.
Makayla Strutton from the Lady Tiger’s den crafted two of her best times in the hurdles. In the 100m hurdles, she clocked in at 17.55 seconds. In the 300m hurdles, she crossed at 52.99.
Strutton came within 7 hundredths of a second of meeting pre-qualification standards to state in the 100m hurdles. Her new personal record did elevate her state ranking to fourth.
Strutton’s 300m hurdle time moved her to the fifth best player in the state pecking order.
Staying with the 300m hurdle times, Mansfield’s Victor Steffen moved into the top ranks inside the 2A-4 boy’s conference. The senior timed over the 8 barrier race in 48.90. That put him number one within the league by 2.27 seconds.
Sophomore Madelen Jones took her long jump to a new level in Van Buren. The multiple event athlete stretched her horizontal hop to 15’ 10.75”. That pushed her to the fourth-best measure in the class 2A state rankings.
Lady Tiger, Seven Sanderson, sets for a large throw in the shot put circle at a recent track meet for Mansfield
Teammate Danielle Lillie is close behind with a long jump measure of 15’ 3” she achieved at the Gaile Hainley Relays earlier this season. Strutton hit her best long jump at Southside with a 15’ 0” landing.
The horizontal runways saw Lady Tiger Jadelynn Wood move past the 30-foot mark in the triple jump at Van Buren. The sophomore bounded 30’ 5.5” for her PR.
Wood continued a good night in Pointer country by capping a well constructed 4x400m relay team. The combination of Shelby Cole, Lillie, Strutton, and Wood round the 4 lap cooperative in 4:47.03. It was the team’s best output of the season and placed third in the Pointer Relays.
Wood went the fastest as the team’s anchor leg. She came across in 1:09 for her 400m split.
Ryan Hayslip had a good night as well at the Monday meet. The junior who specializes in the pole vault went over 10 feet for the first time to earn sixth place. It also positioned him tied for third in the 2A vaulter’s list.
Hayslip, although not making a recorded bar at the Southside hosted McDonald’s Relays, felt his jumps were even better than his Van Buren vaults.
The crossbar at Fort Smith was set at 11’ 6” for the opening height. Hayslip contended his attempts were at least even with that crossbar height. Consequently, his instincts indicated his vaults may have actually been better than when he cleared a personal best two days earlier.
Mansfield’s best relay for the week was the women’s 4x100m relay. The combination of Faith Rainwater, Jones, Strutton, and Lillie rounded the one lap race in 55.35 for seventh place among all big schools at the McDonald’s Meet.
The team’s Van Buren race was slightly slower at 55.40 but actually finished higher at third among another strong field of large school competitors.
Seven Sanderson picked up fourth-place points early in the week at the shot put ring. The sophomore Lady Tiger threw a season-best 30’ 5.5”.
Rainwater clocked in at 2:45.41 for her season-best in the 800m run this past week. Tommy Phang pushed out a PR in the 100m dash at 12.11 in Van Buren to add to the rising accomplishments of the Tigers.
Mansfield is scheduled to host the 2A Region 4 District Championships on Tuesday, April 27.
Pictured: Mansfield junior high boys and girls celebrate the dual track and field championships the teams won on April 20 in Acorn
Mansfield ordered two scoops that would survive the harsh frigid winds blasting an unusually cold spring day in Acorn. The flavor of the day was the sweet taste of a conference championship. Behind distinctly different attacks, both the Tigers and Lady Tigers took on the 2A-4 junior high track and field conference for a pair of district championships.
The Mansfield women won 14 of 18 events in route to a runaway victory. The Mansfield men bobbed and weaved landing a series of body blows to outpoint their opponents. The results saw the two local teams accumulate 281 and 185 points respectively to take the wins.
Azlynn Stover
Fourteen of 19 competing Lady Tigers finished in the top two places at the conference meet to earn All-District honors. Doing so was freshman Raine Hecox, eighth-graders Alyssa Black, Addison Bowman, Presley Curry, Meghan Emery, Shelbie Fuller, Kaylie Lowery, Azlynn Stover, Aaliyah Summers, Trinity Triska, Carter Whiley, Laney Wood, and seventh graders Daisy Nelson and Kaylee Ward.
“The morning started off with mild temperatures and a slight breeze,” confessed Mansfield coach John Mackey. “By late afternoon the temperature dropped over twenty degrees with high cutting winds. Our kids held strong and performed near perfection. The shine of that first place trophy really warmed it up. It’s incredible how many of our players were at the top of their game.”
Trey Powell
The Tiger men won only seven events but kept the pressure on with multiple places in nearly every event. Through the thick of things, twelve individuals finished in the top two for All-District credentials.
Peyton Martin and Sammy Sellers were the lone freshmen securing such distinction. Cisco Fildes, Trey Powell, Austin Ruiz, and Toby Towe made the list from the Tiger eighth grade roster. Joseph Carter, Josiah Fildes, Jonah Martin, Rylan Nichols, Dawson Robinson, and Dominic Shores finished top two from the seventh-grade team.
“It was a good day to be a Tiger,” said men’s coach Mark Tolton. “The boys really wanted to win and broke free of a really close race with Magazine.”
Kaylie Lowery
The final tally in the boys’ division ended with Mansfield on top of Magazine 185 to 154.5. The Tigers were nursing a slim 16 point lead with a couple of events to go. Then the determined crew broke loose with 18 big points from the 200m dash. Powell and Robinson went one-two in that sprint race to put the team championship in the bag.
Manfield’s girls had less drama surrounding their title bout. Their depth-filled roster not only managed win after win, but they crossed in waves as well to outpoint the nearest contender by 87 points.
Toby Towe
That second-place pretender, the Acorn Tigers, came the closest behind their high point winner Harlei McCourtney. The Acorn freshman cracked 56 points with five outright victories and one third place medal.
“We dominated in a bunch of areas,” noted Mackey. “But what was important was when we didn’t win we covered them up with multiple top eight place holders.”
Mansfield’s Triska, Woods, Bowman, and Nelson countered with gold medal victories through the middle distance or hurdle events. The four laid the foundation for nearly all the team’s relays as well.
Raine Hecox
Whiley, Summers, Presley, Stover, Fuller, Emery, Black, and Hecox were the other baton passing patrons plastered within the foundations.
Lowery and Ward won the throwing events for the girls. Lowery hit a season-best 80’ 9” in the discus for the gold. Ward amazed once again in the shot with a 35’ 7” blast for another first-place award.
Cisco Fildes won the men’s discus by an inch. Sellers took the shot put by 6.5 inches.
From L to R: Toby Towe, Trey Powell, Dawson Robinson
Ruiz, Martin, Boston Elmore, and Josiah Fildes dominated the pole vault in the men’s vertical event. Woods, Nelson, Triska, and Madison Hearron swept the women’s vault for Mansfield.
Martin, Carter, Nichols, and Josiah Fildes took the gold in the men’s 4x800m relay. It was a remarkable feat for a team composed of all seventh graders.
With the track and field district title, the Mansfield junior high girls did something that school officials aren’t sure has been done before in recent history. The core group of junior high players won league championships in every sport this school year. Those titles included sweeps in cross country, volleyball, basketball, and track.

The Paris Lady Eagles softball team, having won the 3A-4 North division and the top seed in next week’s district tournament, completed the last week of the regular season with a sweep of non-conference victories. On Friday, the Lady Eagles defeated a very good Class 3A Lincoln Lady Wolves team who Paris could very well see again in two weeks in the regional tournament. Paris won a hard-fought 8-4 victory over Lincoln.

Friday’s win over the Lady Wolves was Lady Eagles’ Jadyn Hart’s last home game of her high school career. Although she potentially has a lot of softball left to be played for Paris, it was moving to know that the talented Hart was taking the circle for her last time at home. And in the most fitting way, Hart once again pitched the distance for the win and the victory. In fact, the immortal senior struck out the side in her last inning pitched in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Eagles will play their final regular season game of the 2021 season on Monday at Mansfield. The Lady Tigers, playing in Class 2A for the first time, are composed of a very talented group of athletes that have had a tremendous year in all sports. The Lady Tigers were undefeated in volleyball and marched their way through the state tournament with decisive victories, winning the state title in dominating fashion. That tone continued in basketball where they again made a deep state tournament run, and now, in softball season, the Lady Tigers find themselves as the top seed in their conference going into their district tournament.
Resident Press Photo
Paris will end their season against a very good Mansfield team who will test the Lady Eagles and be a great spring board going into post-season. Both teams are very good, and both teams should benefit down the line in the playoffs after having the chance to play each other on Monday. The timing of the game is good; both teams will have an opportunity to rest their pitching after the game and be in good shape for their conference tournaments.
Paris will play in the 3A-4 district tournament on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Eagles have a bye to the semi-finals due to their number one seed in the tournament. If Paris wins on Thursday, they will play in the final on Friday at 6 p.m. If they lose their semi-final game, they will play in the third place game on Friday at 4 p.m. Both the softball and baseball district tournaments will be played at Booneville, and simultaneously to each other at the same times at the baseball / softball complex.

After Friday’s win over Lincoln, I spoke with Lady Eagles’ softball coach Donald Hart by text. Coach Hart, pleased with how his team responded in the win over Lincoln, said, “I thought we played a well rounded game. In the circle we were able to strike out 15 against a good hitting Lincoln team. At the plate, we scored eight runs, despite leaving another eight on the bases. Defensively, we turned two double plays, one of which was a heads up play by first baseman Kasse Appleton.”
With respect to the last week of the regular season and a sweep of games in the last week, Coach Hart remarked, “We had a very good week going 4-0 vs some very good teams. I believe we are peaking at the right time for post-season play.”
As both a father and the coach of Jadyn Hart, who pitched her final game at home, I asked Coach Hart what emotions he was feeling as the game came to a close with Hart striking out the side in her final inning. Coach Hart said, “As a coach and a dad I didn’t put much focus on Friday with it being Jadyn’s last home game. I just wanted the team to send the seniors out on a win and finish a 10-1 home record. I believe everyone that was at the ballpark Friday got to see a senior that has put a ton of time and effort into the game she loves. She will be one of those kids that will be hard to replace. Obviously, when that last high school game comes for Jadyn, my emotions will be high.”
Yes Coach, all of our emotions will be high for this outstanding senior that has contributed greatly in two sports each year for Paris. But for now, the Lady Eagles have their sights set on the district tournament and district championship. The Lady Eagles have a sport already waiting in the regional tournament, so, for Paris, it is very much one step at a time for the Lady Eagles. If they don’t look too far ahead and take it week-by-week for the next three weeks, Paris could find themselves competing for a state championship.

Additional photos from Friday’s game with Lincoln are available on Facebook at Paris Eagles Sports. Fans from both schools can access these photos and copy them at no charge. Resident Press will be in Paris on Monday to cover the baseball Eagles final regular season game with West Fork.
It is a big week coming up for both Paris teams as the regular seasons conclude and post-season play continues. Watch for coverage of the district tournament next weekend in the online edition of Resident Press. Good luck to both Paris teams, and I’ll see you at the ballpark!
