Sr Pirates Sailing Off To Playoffs

The 2020 Cedarville Pirates football season has been anything but boring that’s for sure. For their final scheduled conference battle, the Cedarville Sr High Pirates hosted the Lincoln Wolves. The Wolves had already hung 264 points on previous opponents so the Pirates knew they would have their work cut out for them. And just like all season long, Cedarville gave everything they had full force for four quarters refusing to stop until they heard that final buzzer. But there can only be one winner and the Wolves walked away with the 48-30 win.

Although the pain of losing is felt, the Sr Pirates have no time to dwell in it because now they have a playoff game to focus on. Cedarville finished conference play with a 4-3 record and sit 7-3 on the season. QB, Cody Dickens, closed out the game against Lincoln with 6/14 passes for 87 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Hayden Morton earned 5 rushes for 107 yards and 1 TD. Kelin Mitchell ended with 3 rushes for 42 yards and 1 TD. Hayden Partain scored 9 rushes for 21 yards. Bruce Turney made 1 reception for 6 yards. Tommy Metcalf grabbed 4 receptions for 55 yards and 1 TD. And Darryl Kattich netted 1 reception for 26 yards and 20 carries for 172 yards and 1 TD.

Cedarville’s defense getting the job done

Max Washausen and Matt Chandler are the talented coaches duo who head the Pirates ship and on November 20, they will steer their boys 4 hours NE into Melbourne for the first round of playoffs. The Bearkatz hold a 7-2 season record with 306 points earned and 145 points given to their opponents. Cedarville has 402 points in their back pocket while their competitors walked away with 239.

Lady Tigers Take State Runner-Up In XC

Pictured: The Mansfield senior high girls are pictured with the Class 2A State Runner-Up trophy along the grounds of Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs site of the 2020 Cross Country State Finals.

For the first time in school history, Mansfield High School brought home a trophy from the state cross country championships. No, it wasn’t for the first place state title. However, for a program that has never seen a major team award from the Arkansas Activities Association cross country finals, it was still a big deal. Mansfield earned the Class 2A State Runner-Up trophy at the 2020 women’s cross country state finals on November 5.

Mansfield, loaded with underclassmen, had 78 team points behind Lady Tiger top runner Faith Rainwater. Just a junior, the mighty mite rounded the 3.1-mile course along the infield of Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs at 22:55.30. That measure was good for eighth place and an All-State accommodation.

Sophomore Jadelynn Wood closed in twelfth place. Her marked time was a career-best 23:53.71. She was the second Mansfield athlete to cross the finish line.

Darby Jones of Mansfield was next in the scoring lineup for the Lady Tigers. The junior runner came in 21st place. She was pegged at a time of 25:04.82 over the moderately hilly course.

Cross country power Quitman had a front-loaded roster that put two runners inside the top 6. Their number three runner crossed just behind Rainwater at ninth. By the time their fourth and fifth scorers crossed at 13th and 17th place respectively, it was becoming clear they would be the Class 2A state champs.

Quitman did win the senior girls title with 36 points. Mansfield closed the ranks when Hope Rainwater and Katlynn Moore placed 32nd and 33rd respectively.

The Lady Tiger total was not enough for a shot at the championship trophy. It did however fend off a charging Melbourne bunch that garnered 94 points for third place in the team rankings in the girls division.

Mansfield’s first displacer was sophomore Alyssa James. The tiny tenth grader posted a 40th place time of 27:24.71. She had been in the Tiger scoring five the previous three meets.

McKenzie Griffin and Cassidy Carlton completed the active state roster for Mansfield.

John Branche and Ethan Streets participated in the men’s race at state.

Branche, a junior, had a solid time of 21:59.12. His mark was 48th place out of 105 runners in the 2A men’s division.

Streets, a first-time senior runner, completed the course at a pace that satisfied his first experience at a state championship. The former manager of the cross country team was proud of his accomplishments achieved in his first full season as a runner.

Sr Lady Bulldogs Are Ready For Takeoff

The Sr High Lady Bulldogs ended the season last year playing some of their best ball when it mattered the most. Finishing the regular season as the 6th seed for the conference tournament didn’t slow those ladies down as they made a remarkable run in the tournament to capture a berth to the regional tournament for the first time in seven seasons. “Through all of the ups and downs, these girls never stopped working and competing every day. We started the year slow then had a good showing at the Bill Frye Christmas Classic, and ultimately reached our pre-season goal of a regional berth,” stated Coach Josh Atchley.

The Sr Lady Dogs only lost one from last season’s team in Chelsea Stidman, but she was a do-everything player for the Lady Bulldogs. Looking to fill some of her role this season will be seniors Rheagan Sanford, Jessica Ozuna, and Kadance Espinoza. “These seniors are hungry for another berth to the regional tournament and look to expand their roles if they want to reach that goal this season.” Juniors Molly Richmond, Summer Imperiali, Bianca Hinojosa, and Hailey Stidman all saw big minutes as sophomores and will need to show out this season as well. The sophomore group includes Jinjer Ward, Hazel Buesing, Ale Johnson, Vivian Holmes, and Allyson Dye. “All of the underclassmen will be a big part of what we accomplish this year, and they all have worked incredibly hard to prepare for this season. Wear your masks and cheer on those Lady Bulldogs!”

Mansfield High School Collecting Big Trophies

Within a 5 day space, Mansfield High School collected two big trophies. One was the Class 2A State Championship trophy in volleyball. The other was the Class 2A State Runner-up trophy in women’s cross country.

Last Friday night at halftime of the Mansfield versus Hackett football game, those Lady Tiger teams presented Mansfield Superintendent Joe Staton and Principal Donnie Eveld with their respective accolades.

Public address announcer Travis Pettus recalled the highlights of the two different teams while introducing the team rosters to the attending audience. After each masked group was honored, the team captains of both squads presented the Tiger bosses with the heavy-duty hardware.

State MVP Brooke Wright carried the gold plated champion’s award for the Lady Tiger volleyball team. All-State long-distance runner Faith Rainwater toted the silver-plated runner-up statuette for the MHS cross country team.

Mansfield’s 2020 State Championship volleyball team took their title on October 31 in a 3-0 sweep of Lavaca in Hot Springs. Mansfield’s 2020 State Runner-up cross country team brought home their second-place reward edging out Melbourne at Oaklawn Park also in Hot Springs on November 5.
