Sr Rattlers Finding Their Basketball Footing

Pictured is Ethan Staton

The popular Mark Twain saying “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog” couldn’t ring any truer for the Magazine Sr High Rattlers basketball team. Two games into their season, the Rattlers have put up an incredible fight against both the Scranton Rockets and the Acorn Tigers. Although Magazine took a loss in each game with the most recent being 74-51 against Acorn, the Rattlers find themselves struggling with turnovers. “But once they get their basketball hands and legs back, we should be tough,” explained Head Coach, Buck Chappell.

With only 12 players on their roster, that’s more than enough to get the job done especially considering the talent that the team holds. A week from today, the Rattlers will open conference play against Lavaca. But before they step onto that platform, Magazine still has a few games left to get their feet wet. Tonight, December 10, the Rattlers will take on the Eagles at Union Christian Academy with games starting at 4 p.m. The Eagles currently sit 3-3 on their season and 1-0 in conference.

“I feel like we will do good tonight against Union Christian Academy. We had our fifth practice yesterday and things are starting to shape up. Turnovers have been our worse enemy and forcing some shots when we could take better ones is another factor. A game like tonight is what we need to get on the right track and begin working together as a team. I have a good feeling that we will do well and have a good night for the program.”

Residents Decide Fate of Proposed Traffic Relief

The Special Election on December 10th will have two questions:

1) To refund (payoff) the existing bond that paid for the police station.

2) In order to do that and get the funds for the road project, extend the existing quarter cent sales tax to fund a street improvement bond of $5 million dollars.

Both issues have to pass or nothing can happen. The vote must be “For” refunding the bonds AND “For” street improvement bonds. Neither issue can proceed without the other.

Early voting is complete. Voters can visit the polling location at City Hall today (Election Day, Tuesday, Dec. 10) from 7:30am-7:30pm.

Black Honors Veterans Thru Start-Up

Long before her first product was made tangible, Greenwood entrepreneur Machelle Black of Shell Shock Apparel knew her mission, and with definitive meaning.

Within that mission carries an effort to bring awareness to PTSD, and with each purchase, a Veteran is supported through many methods.

Last Saturday, Black along with her family, and many loyal supporters gathered to lay wreaths at the Fort Smith National Cemetery.

“We feel that as Americans, we should respect and honor our fallen Veterans. Without these great men and women, we would not enjoy the freedoms that we have today”

– Machelle Black

While many give their time for personal reasons, Black added that this gesture is one additional way they can contribute to taking care of the military family.

In addition to their many supportive outlets, they also assist donations to Service Dogs of Distinction who provide service dogs at no charge to Veterans suffering with PTSD.

We want to make this an annual tradition of gathering Shell Shock Apparel supporters to come out and lay wreaths. Our hope is that we will not only help raise awareness of our cause, but encourage members of the community to support our Veterans every way possible.

The laying of wreaths holds special meaning to Machelle’s Husband, Travis Black, who is currently a Master Sergeant in the Air Force.

Obituary- Harrell Cabe (1961-2019)

Harrell Wayne Cabe, son of the late Bob and Mildred Cabe, was born June 3, 1961, in Waldron, Arkansas and quietly and peacefully went to meet his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 8th, 2019. Harrell fought bravely and was a true gentleman during his difficult battle with Huntington’s Chorea Disease; until his passing when he was called to his heavenly home.

From a very early age, Harrell professed his love for Jesus Christ and was a dedicated, faithful Charter Member of Southside Baptist Church. In his church family, he served his heart’s desire to the Lord as a teacher, deacon, music director and song leader for several decades.

In 1985, he married the love of his life, Alishia Yandell and they had two beautiful daughters, Savanna and Marci. Harrell was blessed to give both his daughters away in marriage to two fine Christian men, Marwan and Tyler, and is now “Pops” to four precious grandchildren: Cason, Addilyn, Noah and Shaya. His grandchildren were his heart and soul and he was truly loved and adored in their eyes. He was born to be a grandpa and enjoyed every second he was given with them.

Harrell was a 1979 graduate of Waldron High School and became a local construction company owner in Waldron and surrounding communities. Harrell was a tradesman and enjoyed working and building with his hands. He was taught and apprenticed in the trade of construction under his Uncle Earoll. In 1991, he began his own construction company and named it after his two princesses, Marci and Savanna, lovingly called M&S Enterprises. Harrell employed many young men through the years and mentored them and loved to share his faith, like a loving father would to his sons. Harrell truly cared about the people he employed and did not see them as employees, but rather family. His skills and talents in the art of construction was coupled with a very generous heart. And often at his own expense, would help others in need without hesitation. This was a man that loved his family, his church, his friends and his community with a true servant’s heart.

Harrell has given his time and served many organizations, such as: School Board Member for Waldron Public Schools, Poteau River Conservation District Board, Class Parent to both his daughter’s high school classes, tirelessly built many floats for students and churches during parade times, and reverently and honorably filled any position needed in his church.
His days on this earth will forever be cherished in the lives of his family. Harrell leaves behind his darling love and wife, Alishia, of the home. And he leaves two daughters and two son in laws, Savanna and Tyler Thornton, of Waldron and Marci and Marwan Aboul-Zelof, of Beirut, Lebanon. Although his grandchildren are young, Cason, Addilyn, Noah and Shaya will never forget him and the love and kindness they always received from their “Pops.” This beloved man also leaves behind a dear sister, Vickie, whom has been ever present in his life during years of health and later sickness. Harrell also leaves behind his beloved mother-in-law, Della Yandell, who was so proud to call him her son. Two precious nieces, Crystal Stevens and Valerie Petty and two great nieces, Kylee and Morgan Brown, aunts, uncles and a multitude of treasured friends will also mourn in the passing of this great man of God.

Harrell is preceded in death and will be welcomed at the gates of glory by his parents, Bob and Mildred Cabe, his brother, David Cabe, and his father-in-law, James Yandell.

Harrell’s life celebration will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the Southside Baptist Church in Waldron, Arkansas with Bro. Larry Free officiating and Rev. Billy Harwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sehorn Cemetery near Waldron, Arkansas. Arrangements are being entrusted to the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in Waldron, Arkansas.

Harrell’s pallbearers will be: Paul Atchley, Garrett Atchley, Josh Atchley, Caleb Free, Joshua Free, Daniel Free, Darren Hughes, Billy Zimmer, Tim Lewis, and Wade Shaddon. Honorary pallbearers will be: (Harrell’s son-in-laws) Tyler Thornton, Marwan Aboul-Zelof and (Harrell’s grandchildren) Cason and Addilyn Thornton and Noah and Shaya Aboul-Zelof.

Harrell’s visitation will be Wednesday, December 11, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home.

Cedarville’s Darryl Kattich Receives All-State Selection

Pictured is Coach Max Washausen and Sophomore Darryl Kattich

Cedarville’s running back, Darryl Kattich, was recently selected to the All-State class for the 2019 football season. Kattich, a sophomore, is the only non-senior of the four players selected in the 3A-1 conference. Coached by Max Washausen, Kattich rushed for 1,511 yards on 171 carries with 18 touchdowns on the year. He played in all 10 games for the Pirates averaging 8.8 yards per carry and 151.1 yards per game. Kattich rushed for 100+ yards in 9 of the 10 games played. He is the Class 3A top rusher in the state and is currently a Top 10 finalist for Sophomore of the year, regardless of classification.

Pirates selected for 3A-1 All-Conference for the 2019 football season include Hayden Partain, Kevan Jones, Alex Ascencio, Kelin Mitchell, and Brayden Russell.

Running Back Darryl Kattich

It’s been 10 years since the Pirates have had an All-State football player and ten years ago was the end of a three-year streak for the Pirates All-State selections.  In 2009, Pirate duo, Kyle Bailey and Kyle Ellenbarger made All-State. In 2008, Mike Roberts was selected and in 2007, Barrett Blaylock was picked. With two more years to play, Kattich has a good chance of making additional history for the Cedarville Pirates as a multi-year or duo selection. Regardless, this four-sport athlete will be anything but boring to watch.

Pirate Cheer “WE RUN THIS SHIP”

The Cedarville Pirate Cheer team is flying high following their second competition of the year. Coached by Treva Rice and Dusty Steele, the team has their eye set on a trip to Nationals for the second year in a row. Last year’s team made history by being the first Cedarville team to make the Orlando, Florida trip.

Two weeks ago, at the Rogers Heritage War Eagle Cheer Competition, the Pirates took second place in the Sr. High Coed Performance in the 3A-4A class. This past weekend the Pirates were Coed Champions for the 1A-4A class at the Arkansas Cheer Coaches Association Northwest Arkansas Classic hosted by West Fork High School. They were also awarded the Top Stunts for the overall teams in classes 1A-6A. Nick Moore, Audrey Gathright, and Destiny Mahan received first place medals for winning the high school coed individual stunt group competition.

Up next for the Pirates is the Arkansas High School State Cheerleading Championship on December 21 in Hot Springs, AR, for a chance to make Nationals in Orlando, FL.

Waldron Hosts Winter Wonderland Festival

The City of Waldron hosted an all-day, fun-filled Winter Wonderland Festival on Saturday, December 7, and closed out the day with the town’s annual parade.

The success is credited to the hard work of city employees like Brandon Nelson, Regina Oliver, LaVada Allen, and of course City Clerk/Treasurer Sherry Johnston and Mayor Millard.

Early Voting Underway in Special Election

Early voting is currently underway in the City of Greenwood. Voters will head to the polls on election day, Tuesday, December 10, to decide on an extension of a current tax, providing traffic relief inside the city.

Voters will see two questions on their ballot. First, whether to give the city permission to retire a 2014 bond, which is already in place. Second, whether to extend the quarter-percent sales and use tax from the 2014 bond. The approval would provide the necessary funding for the proposed traffic relief project without a tax increase.

If passed, the traffic relief plan would occur in two phases. In phase one, approximately one mile of highway will be constructed from the intersection of Highway 10 and Coker Street to the intersection of Highway 10 and Highway 96. Then, in phase two, two miles of Highway 10 would be widened.

In a town hall meeting on November 19, Mayor Doug Kinslow stated that this will not only provide traffic relief, but will also address safety issues and impact future economic development.

“This has been an issue for at least 30 years,” stated Kinslow. “I’ve lived here all my life…Every mayor that has been here has done their best to work and find a way to fix it.”

The project is expected to cost around $33 milion. Kinslow has worked diligently to find ways to fund the project without raising taxes, and is optimistic about putting the proposal to the voters in this special election.
