Engineering Firm Highlights City Progress

Daniel Barnes with McClelland Consulting Engineers presented a slide show at Tuesday night’s Waldron City Council meeting.

In that informational presentation, Barnes highlighted all the progress the city has made over the past year.

Some of those improvements include: water line replacement, improvements at the water treatment plant, side walk additions and the new Forrester-Davis Memorial Park.

Alderman June Haas said “anytime it is pretty, that park is full of kids. I think it’s the most awesome thing we’ve done in a long time.”

Mayor David Millard agreed, and added that there will be a lot more going into the park. Equipment such as a dinosaur dig, and a rock climb will be added soon. Millard concluded, “good things are happening in Waldron and we’re gonna just keep going!”

Scouting for Food Benefits Jude 22 Food Pantry

Scouts from troop #674 hosted the Scouting for Food event over the weekend.

That food drive benefited the Jude 22 Food Pantry in Lavaca. The food drive generated 96 bags of food, approximately 500 pounds!

“We were truly blessed with the food from the food drive,” said Coordinator Stephanie Hubbard. “Jude 22 wants to thank all of the Scouts, Leaders, Parents and to all who donated to this cause. We love you all, and truly appreciate your support. God bless you!”

Play Ball!! ESCYO sign-ups are here.

It’s almost baseball and softball season in Lavaca, which is arguably the happiest time of the year! There is nothing quite like the sound of a ball coming off the bat, or the sight of your kid stretching out a double. The game is truly an American staple, like hotdogs, apple pie, and Norman Rockwell pictures. Here in small town southern towns, it is almost a religious experience, not quite but almost. Cindy Hartsfield, the President of the East Sebastian County Youth Organization (ESCYO), has been planning what will be a fantastic season for Lavaca’s kids, but needs your help.

There are still many sign up dates ahead for Little league baseball and softball. There is also an online registration site that will remain open until 6pm on March 23, 2019. The next opportunity to sign up in person will be this Saturday during the Little League Basketball tournament at the High School gym, Saturday from 10:30am until 1pm. This was listed without a time on the flyers, so please help get the word out! Since the online registration was opened up, and with only one in person sign up in the books, only seven kids have signed up for “stay at home” T-ball. The goal is to have enough 3-4 year olds to put together four teams, so that they don’t have to travel. As far as the rest of the program, to date there are only seven total kids signed up to play. As a result, the League is asking for help in getting the word out. They would also like to have as many kids as possible to sign up as early as possible.

The League is excited about the upcoming season and is trying to make sure they have enough good coaches to teach the kids the game. The board also has some new faces this year as well as some old ones. Cindy Hartsfield is the President of ESCYO and the Secretary of Suburban League. New officers this year are Patrick Ellison- VP, Missy Strickland – Secretary and Heather Newbolt – Treasurer. Cindy has posted a sign up flyer with dates on their Facebook page as well as contact info for both herself and Patrick. Cindy is happy to answer any questions you may have. Please find them on Facebook, or visit with them this Saturday to sign up your kids to play.

Tiger BB Season Ends But Youth Drives The Future

The Mansfield Sr Lady Tigers ended their season Monday with a loss to Elkins in the first round of the 3A-1 District Tournament. It was an up and down season for the Lady Tigers. They faced the downs of extremely tough opponents, suffered injuries, and the ball just rolled the wrong way at times. With that being said, the Lady Tigers had one thing this season that many other teams didn’t. They had the grit to never give up. They only had two seniors on the team, but those two seniors provided strong leadership. They had the heart to face overwhelming odds. But possibly the most exciting key the Lady Tigers had was youth. This was a young team on the court cutting their teeth against senior-heavy teams all season. As cliche as it may sound, next year will be better.

Lady Tigers Coach Joshua Bryan said “Our Lady Tigers broke many barriers that had plagued the team in the past. We had many obstacles that presented themselves in many ways before the season started and throughout the season. Our seniors leaving us this year have started a trend that will continue to develop our Lady Tiger basketball program into one to be feared in years to come. Now it’s time to look towards next season. We will build on our positives and fix the negatives from this past season. We have made plans to work hard and make ourselves more disciplined and aggressive on the basketball court. We will be a team that our school and community will be proud of.”

The Sr Tigers also ended their season Monday night losing to Lincoln in the District Tournament. This season was an excitement-packed season for players, coaches, and fans alike. The Sr Tigers were one of the most aggressive and high energy teams on the court all season. A young team with only two seniors to lead the way, the Tigers proved night after night that they wouldn’t be pushed around by anyone. No matter the score or record, the Tigers had the stands roaring every game fed by one thing…..110% effort. That pure unadulterated effort showed everyone that the players were proud to be Mansfield Tigers and that pride bled into the stands more and more as each game went by.

Sr Tigers Coach Keith Dake said “This season was one of the highest of highs; and lowest of lows. It’s never easy when you only have two seniors on the roster. A seniors experience and leadership on the floor is something that is of immeasurable importance to a team. Luckily, the two we had were committed to helping rebuild the program and make us competitive once again. We competed against several of the conferences top opponents throughout the season. We will be returning 4 starters along with 3 of our top 4 guys that came off the bench for us this season. Not to mention moving up 6 freshmen who recently competed for a district championship. We will be preparing for the upcoming season by spending a large amount of time in the offseason building our strength and condition and becoming better overall athletes. We’ll also be attending several local team camps including the UofA to faceoff against some of the states top competition. The future for the Mansfield Tigers is looking very bright. We will continue to improve and work hard to ensure we can battle for one of the top seeds in next years conference and hopefully, make a deep run into the postseason for the first time in a very long time.”

Waldron Moving On Up With Upward

The Waldron Upward basketball season is on a roll. Sitting in their fifth week of practices and games, community support has been a great encouragement. Upward in Waldron is celebrating its 11th season with plans of continuing to keep that number rising.

The games are free of charge and played on Saturdays starting at 1 p.m at the Waldron Nazarene Church. A concession stand is opened and offers burgers, fries, candy, drinks, and more so come hungry. There are eight teams that are participating in this years Upward season.

In grades Pre K-K there are two teams, the Cougars and the Panthers. Playing for grades 1-2 are the Cheetahs and the Polar Bears. Representing grades 3-4 are the Falcons and the Owls. And the top dog teams from the 5-6 grades are the Gators and the Buffaloes.

Upward is a nationwide faith-based program that was started in 1995. Their mission is to promote the discovery of Jesus through sports. Coaching the third and fourth graders from Team Owls is Doyle Dickens. Doyle had this to say about his team. “My focus is to encourage not only my Owls team but also the rest of the teams to not give up and to keep playing hard. Focus on one shot at a time. Keep up the great effort and work. I’m very proud of every one of you. Thank you to my assistant, coach Joe Richmond, on all the hard work that you put into teaching the kids. It is greatly appreciated.”

Judge Dismisses Fraud Case

On Monday, February 11, Crawford County Circuit Judge Mike Medlock, ruled that since there is a pending case (Potter V. Holmes) in Scott County, that the fraud case in Crawford County will be dismissed.

-See related story.

Fred Potter filed fraud charges against Cassandra Holmes in the summer of 2018. Court documents showed that an out of state handwriting expert issued a detailed report supporting the alleged forgery.

Judge Medlock stated that “it is the opinion of this court that the defendant’s motion should be granted on the grounds of another pending action in Potter v. Holmes.”

Potter’s ongoing legal battle against his niece will continue in a Scott County Court under Judge David McCormick.

Capital Goes Green

On Tuesday, February 12, the Arkansas capital went green! Around 800 members of 4-H chapters from across the state wore their signature green shirts while visiting in Little Rock.

Two local chapters were there representing Sebastian and Scott County. Besides interacting with fellow 4-Hers from across the state, the groups got to witness the work of legislators first hand.

Members of the Sebastian County group visited with Senator Terry Rice, from the ninth district.

Members of the Scott County group visited with State Representative Marcus Richmond. Richmond stated that he “had the pleasure of spending a little time speaking with our own Scott County 4-H members, answered some questions and shared a little about what we do in our state legislature. They had a good time and so did I.”

The governor and lieutenant governor both addressed the 4-H youth. Governor Asa Hutchinson said “As a former 4-H student, I know from experience that this program does a great job encouraging our youth in Arkansas to actively make a difference in their community.”
