Lady Tigers Scored “Cheerific” At STATE

By Megan Hecox

The Mansfield Sr High Lady Tigers made their way to the Hot Springs Convention Center this past Saturday to rock and “roll” their way through their STATE competition. The Lady Tigers competed against 19 other schools in their division and hit with zero deductions, placing 7th out of 20.

The Sr High competed in the Game Day Division which is broken down into three sections. The girls have to show their skills in their fight song chant, band chant, and crowd leading. The teams get judged on their crowd appeal, visual appeal, execution, and overall impression to name a few.

Head Sr High Coach, Ashley Wilson, said of her girls and this year’s season, “It has been a crazy past few months. We started competition practice in August and have been going ever since. It hasn’t been easy and we have hit a few bumps in the road. I am so proud of these girls and of all of the hard work that they have put in!”

The annual tradition is in its fourth year. Police Chief Boyd Farmer, Corporal Tom Garrison and officers Stacy Wieburg and Kelly Perez all took part in the event. Also participating, Brandon Odle from the Huntington Police Department.
A big thank you to those who make Kids with Cops possible. It is truly a blessing to the children, their families and all those who take part.

By Tammy Moore Teague
The Mansfield Volunteer Fire Department continued it’s annual tradition of delivering toys to local children on Saturday, December 15. This is the third year Chief Stephen Haysmer and his crew have sponsored Fireman’s Christmas Carry.Mansfield-volunteer-fire-Christmas-Carry
The Mansfield Dollar General Store and Mansfield City Hall collected the donated items. Volunteers wrapped the gifts and loaded up the fire truck. Deliveries were made to nine children in total. Parents and children alike were touched by the love and generosity brought by the department.

Haysmer said this is something he hopes to continue next year and that it continues to grow. “We need the community to help us reach these kids and families. We appreciate everyone who helped and the Dollar General Store for collecting the toys.”

The joy of the faces of those children as they reached for their bag of toys was the true payoff. “It really changes your outlook,” said department member Albert Haysmer.

Golden Arrow Football – individual awards

The Lavaca Golden Arrows have racked up some individual football awards. Football is a team sport and it is often said “there is no I in team.” However, The team is comprised of individual players. Those players who have had extraordinary efforts are honored. What I know of this group of awardees is that they are true leaders who gave an extraordinary effort every time they stepped onto the field. So with no further ado, it is my pleasure to announce this year’s individual awardees from Lavaca High School’s Golden Arrow football team.

Trevon Moore

ALL STATE honors go to Trevon (T-Man) Moore. T-man played both middle linebacker and offensive guard. He lead the Arrows in total tackles with 88, averaging 9.8 tackles per game. He was the Defensive Captain for the Arrows. On offense, T-man lead the way as a pulling guard, clearing holes for Lavaca ball carriers all year. Most of all, Moore was one of the driving forces and motivators on the team.

Jimmy Hall, Mason Walter, Tyler Armistead

ALL DISTRICT honors go out to three well deserving players; Quarterback Jimmy Hall, Running Back Tyler Armistead, and Wide Receiver Mason Walter. Jimmy Hall lead the team in total offense with 951 total yards averaging 135.9 yards per game. Tyler Armistead added 799 total yards with an Average of 88.8 yards per game. Mason Walter averaged 5.7 tackles per game as well as rounding out the offensive attack from the wide receiver position.

Trey Werner, Tucker Marshall, Kaw-Liga Brewer

There were also 3 Honorable mentions. Trey Werner, Tucker Marshall, and Kaw-Liga Brewer. These three were vital to the success of the Arrows this year. Look forward to watching both Kaw-Liga and Tucker next year as the torch has been passed tp them.

Golden Arrow Cheer Team – State Champs!!

Lavaca Cheerleaders take State! The Lavaca Cheer team has worked very hard and competed in 6 competitions this year, but none bigger than today. Today the Golden Arrow Cheer team competed against five schools in the State Championship of the 1-3A co-ed division. The team is bringing home the bling. They are now and forever State Champs! The past two years the team competed in the Game Day category, but have moved this year to the 1-3A Co-Ed Cheer division. This Arrow team spent countless hours fighting through injuries in a quest for the perfect routine. Today they delivered on that quest making all the scapes and bruises worth while. Congratulations to Danielle Overton and her Cheer Team.

Sr Tigers Get Caught By Their Tail

By Megan Hecox

The Mansfield Sr Tigers aired it out against the Waldron Bulldogs but came up with an empty net. The Tigers fell 64-57 to Waldron in a back and forth battle. Mansfield battled not only a rival in Waldron but also with injuries and foul trouble. Due to those unfortunate circumstances, they were able to get other players playing time to help build depth on the benches. The loss puts the Tigers 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference. Coach Keith Dake said “The game last night was everything someone would want and expect in a quality conference rivalry game. We were thrown just about every obstacle that could possibly be sent our way and we were able to battle through it. We had 3 starters with 3+ fouls by mid second quarter and another one injured. We were able to play 10 guys in Friday nights game, 9 of which scored. Jr Forward Ethan Stovall led the Tigers with 17 points and Jr Guards Jaicy Griffin and Layton Howard chipped in with 8 points of their own.”

Mansfield’s Lady Tigers lost 27-23 in a barn burner against the Bulldogs last night. The Lady Tigers traded blows with the Lady Bulldogs the entire game and didn’t back down once. Mansfield’s Lady Tigers are 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference, but don’t let their record fool you. The girls are tremendous competitors who are constantly improving their game. Lady Tigers Coach Joshua Bryan said “The girls had a lot of shots not fall last night. We missed out on many opportunities to win the game but the girls are getting better about seeing an open girl and delivering her the ball. We will work on executing more proficiently after the catch.
So far this season I have seen a growth in grit. As a team, we struggled in the first few games with taking/making contact like taking charges or getting on the floor after a loose ball.”
They say hard work pays off and if that is the case, the Lady Tigers have a BIG paycheck coming to them in the near future.

Both Tiger teams will head north to Elkins December 18th in hopes to bag a record Elk for Christmas dinner.
