The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a shooting that took place last night, December 12.
At approximately 10 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a call from a property owner who believed there might be a prowler on his property, located at the 5500 block of Echo Road in Huntington.
Deputies were immediately dispatched to that location. Meanwhile, according to SCSO Captain Pevehouse, the caller contacted a nearby family member to come to the barn and assist him. “The family member arrived and began to look around the barn. While looking around, he was startled by movement in between some pieces of equipment and knew it was a person. Unsure of the person’s intentions and whether or not the subject had a weapon, the family member shot one round.”
The subject was hit and was held at gunpoint by the family member until the arrival of deputies. EMS was notified and the person was taken to Baptist Health in Fort Smith. “He is still alive and may be facing surgery sometime today. He is listed in critical but stable condition,” added Pevehouse.
Deputies and investigators worked on scene through the night interviewing involved parties. At this time no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing and no names have been released at this time.

Waldron Police Department Seizes Cash and Liquor

Forecast Predicts Raining Cats and Dogs
By Megan Hecox
The rainy season keeps rearing its head and today is no exception. Not only is it raining cats and dogs off the court but it looks to be raining cats and dogs on the court as well. Tigers and Bulldogs that is. The Jr High Mansfield Tigers and the Waldron Bulldogs will battle it out in an epic basketball showdown. Although Waldron had to face the West Fork Tigers on Tuesday, the Bulldogs know all too well that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
The Jr High boys team might have suffered from the on the road blues in their game against West Fork according to Coach Josh Atchley, after having to play Greenland the night before. “We have to keep working,” says Coach Atchley. “We have taken a few steps forward and in Tuesday nights game, we took a step back. We are still struggling with some inexperience but we are definitely ready to get back out there in tonight’s game against the Mansfield Tigers.”
The Jr High Lady Bulldogs started off their game slow against the West Fork Lady Tigers. By the second half though, they had started to figure it out and were able to hold the Lady Tigers to 7 points. Coach Hannah Scantling says she’s proud of the way the girls responded after halftime and battled it out but that they have to find a way to play aggressive all for quarters. “8th grader Jasmine Nelson has been stepping it up and handling the ball well for the Lady Bulldogs,” says Coach Scantling. “She has really impressed me these last few games. Hopefully, the girls come out ready to battle for a conference win in tonight’s game against Mansfield.”
The Jr High Bulldogs will head to Tiger Country tonight December 13th, to take on the Mansfield Tigers at 4:30 pm.
‘Tis The Season To Be “Cheery”
By Megan Hecox

The Sr High Lady Tigers are working hard and preparing to take on STATE which will be held at the Hot Springs Convention Center in Hot Springs Ar. The girls will compete in the Game Day Division which allows squads the chance to showcase their cheer skills that are used during sports games. Best of luck and a safe trip to the Mansfield Lady Tiger Cheerleaders.
Hackett Hornets Are A Shot Above The Rest
By Megan Hecox
Looking back to the start of their season and now, the Hackett Hornets have started making great strides in their basketball skills. The Jr High and Sr High teams are becoming more unified and have seemed to have found a working balance. The Jr Lady Hornets played a close game against the Hector Wildcats last Tuesday but ended up with a 16-11 loss. Madeline Freeman was the top scorer for her team, bringing in 5 points.
The Sr High boys team won their game against the Hector Wildcats with a blowout ending score of 51-24. Dylan Kats lead his team with 16 points while Avery Hester followed with 15 points. This now puts the Hornets at 4-5 for total season play and 1-1 in conference play. The Hornets will face the (3-4) Arkoma Mustangs for tonight’s game. Head Coach, Broc Adams, says of the match-up, “It should be a good game against Arkoma. They are athletic and can shoot. I think we match-up well with them. We are just looking to continue building off of the confidence of last Tuesday’s game and get better one game at a time.”
The (3-6) Sr High Lady Hornets fell short against the Hector Lady Wildcats 41-36. This now puts the Lady Hornets at 0-2 in conference play. Kayla Richardson and Audrie Chaney secured 7 points each for their team. The girls are excited and ready for tonight’s match against the (1-4) Arkoma Lady Mustangs. Head Coach, Claude Foster, explains what’s in store for the Lady Hornets, “The ladies from Arkoma will be the biggest team we have faced this year in terms of size. Three of the players are right around 6 foot tall. We will have to be able to defend against this and consistently score as well. Tonight will be a big test for us.”
The Sr High Hornets will travel to Arkoma to play the Mustangs tonight December 13th at 6 pm.

Waldron Peewee Football Is Stylin’ And Profilin’
By Megan Hecox
There’s nothing like getting an early Christmas present. We’ve all been there. You see that huge present under the tree and your parents give you a small early gift as a tease about how good Christmas will be. The excitement of seeing that one early gift can give you chills as you imagine how much better it’s going to be, come Christmas morning. Well, the Waldron Bulldogs Peewee Football Program got an early gift and boy did it give the players chills. Brand new blacked out helmets!!!
Waldron’s entire community has come together in a matter of weeks to play Santa Clause. Along with a grant, local businesses and citizens stepped up in an enormous way to show the Peewee program that they believe in them and will help them do whatever it takes to build a great Bulldog program.
Waldron Peewee President, Jared Kluthe, said “The Sodie Davidson Park / Peewee football program has received a very generous grant that allows us to buy some much-needed equipment for the kids that are involved in the football program. So with this along with other donations from people and businesses in our community, we are starting with helmets to try to cut down on concussions. Many of our older helmets are outdated and will not meet safety guidelines in the future and safety is our number one goal for these young athletes. We have discussed many new options for graphics and we truly feel that these bring the new age of the old back into our program as we have decided to go back to black and orange instead of the white helmets. We are still working on new designs for the uniforms. Our goal this year is to get 100 helmets and shoulder pads to replace the old ones. We have had an outpouring of support from several people in Waldron.”
This act of giving by the community of Waldron is the perfect example of the Season of Giving. The Waldron Peewee Bulldogs moto is “Rise As One”, but it is apparent that the players aren’t the only ones who have bought into that moto. Waldron as a whole has bought into it as well and is coming together to Rise As One.

Oliver Selected to Serve on State Women’s Leadership Committee
By Tammy Moore Teague
Scott County resident Regina Oliver has been selected to serve on the Farm Bureau State Women’s Leadership Committee.
The Women’s Committee is a vital part of the county and state Farm Bureau organizations, as they plan and implement programs and activities that are an important part of Farm Bureau’s mission. They conduct community-based activities and programs involving Ag in the Classroom, farm tours, commodity promotion, safety, health and agricultural policy.
Oliver was nominated by the district field agent. After being nominated she and the other ladies were approved by the Arkansas Farm Bureau Board of Directors. “She was chosen because she is extremely active in our local women’s committee and has shown great leadership skills,” stated Scott County Committee President Laurie Richardson. “She also has a great passion for agriculture and wanting to make sure our younger generations know where their food comes from. Regina puts together our program for the county fair every year and also joins the rest of our committee in reading to students at Waldron and Mansfield Elementary schools. We attend the Mansfield Health fair every year and participate in Forestry Field day at Waldron Middle School also, and Regina is always present at those activities talking to our children and teaching them about where our food, fiber and fuel come from.”
Her duties on the state committee are:
Assisting at the state Arkansas Women’s Leadership meeting, which is held in Little Rock, by introducing speakers at the different meetings, setting up for the luncheon, and being available for anything that may arise.
Opportunity to attend the National Ag In The Classroom meeting, which is held in a different state each year. This year Arkansas is hosting the meeting in Little Rock.
Serve as judge at the Arkansas State Rice cooking competition which is held yearly at the Arkansas State Fair. The ladies on the State Women’s committee also have the opportunity to cook a meal for the families staying at The Ronald McDonald House
in Little Rock.
Represent Arkansas on a National Level at the American Farm Bureau Convention, where she will attend the National women’s Caucus and meeting.
Oliver will serve a two year term on the Arkansas Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee and her duties will begin in March with the State Women’s meeting. “We are all very proud of Regina for being chosen to serve on the State Women’s Leadership Committee and very excited for her,” added Richardson.
“I am looking forward to serving on it and hope to bring back lots of exciting info for our county,” Oliver said. “I love everything we do for our kiddos.”
