A Tumble 20 Meters Out Takes Down The Tigers

The battle was on at the 3A Region 1 West Conference Championships in Mansfield on April 25. Host Mansfield was riding a winning streak of district titles in the women’s division that was a decade plus two years old. The weather was uncooperative. The league competition was balanced. The Lady Tiger talent was stretched too thin.

The monumental task of holding a trophy that was nearly as old as the Tiger track itself was just too much this time around. It’s as if that huge weight just jumped onto the back of the Lady Tigers unexpectedly and at the wrong time.

Twenty meters away from the finish line in the 4x400m relay, tightening muscles and pure exhaustion literally took Mansfield to the ground. Greenland won. Another team passed for second, and suddenly a four point swing determined the title as Mansfield limped across the line in third.

Greenland took down the Mansfield Lady Tigers for the 2018 3A Region 1 West District Championship. The curiously close 168 to 166 finish left the MHS women holding a runner-up conference plaque for the first time in a dozen years.

Mansfield painted itself into a corner as lack of depth showed in the early going. Earning no points in the pole vault pulled an uncommon thread through the Tiger fabric. Atypical results rendered from rain wrecked field event venues accounted for a lump of poor performances. An overall lack of speed joined by a failure to fill every position all loomed large towards the dismantling of the dynasty.

Despite all the surface dwelling troubles, the home town defending champs somehow climbed into a two point lead before the final race. The Mansfield 300m hurdlers gave the team hope with a second, third, and sixth place finish. The Mansfield 3200m runners buckled down to flip a tepid 200m dash by winning first in the long distance run and placing three others in the top seven.

“We fought hard for a lead but there were points left on the table,” explained Coach John Mackey. “We just didn’t have the bodies to throw into some of those empty spaces. We stretched our kids really thin trying to fill 68 starting positions. We just never really overcame those unexpected defections before the season started.”

So, as it were the 4x400m relay became the unwanted elephant in the stadium. Mansfield would have to catch or stay close to Greenland’s top relay team in the final race to continue the streak.

Mansfield could force at least a share of the title if they could stay within one place of the hard to handle Pirates. For nearly all of the entire relay race, that’s what looked to be happening.

Elkins was hot in pursuit after Mansfield pulled into second place behind Greenland. As the Tiger anchor closed down the final stretch, each grinding step seemed to get heavier and heavier.

Mansfield’s last girl showed unmistakable resolve giving ever ounce of energy into that final run. An unfortunate misstep upon languished legs planted the passionate player face down on the track mere meters from the finish line. Eventually, she wrestled her way back into a upright position to finish the race in third place.

“It just wasn’t in the cards,” said the Mansfield coach. “Our go to girl gave it everything she had. She was amazingly tough but just too tried with all the other things she had to do on the night.”

“We simply needed other players to get out of their comfort zone and show a similar toughness earlier in the meet,” continued Mackey. “We found ourselves in an unfamiliar position. It’s been a long time since we had to drag the weight of the meet around in that last lap. The last group to do it was a bunch of eighth graders that also lost. A year later they started this whole conference winning streak with eight state titles to boot.”

“I’m proud of what we brought to the table this season,” said an emotionally spent Mackey. “Our two seniors just didn’t have enough help. They put a lot into this program, and their place in it is not diminished.”

Senior Megan Rose won the 3200m run. She also won the 1600m run. Freshman Danielle Lillie won the 100m dash. She was also a second place finisher in the 100m hurdles, and long jump.

Delilah McKusker finished second in the 300m hurdles. Corrina Wesley, Alyssa Berry, Lennon Woods, and Rose won the 4x800m relay.

Addison Goetz, Hailey Walker, McKusker, and Lillie finished second in the 4x100m relay. Freshman Brooke Wright won the discus.

Because of their top two order of finish, the nine just mentioned Mansfield players qualified to the state outdoor finals. They also collected All-District honors for their advanced status.

Also scoring for Mansfield was Haylee Buckner in the high jump, Haylie Burns in the shot put, Janna Coplin in the discus, Jessica George in the 1600m run, Madison Nelson in the 1600m run,and Miracle Pettigrew in the 800m.

Tiger Boys Earn Best District Finish in Years

Going into the season, Mansfield High School took a fresh look at their men’s track and field team. Laboring to field a competitive team through much of the past decade, the group approached the 2018 season with a different mind set.

Crossing over to help the men was longtime women’s coach John Mackey along with second year assistant Josh Bryan and newcomer Dustin Payne. Together the three track minded coaches went to work convincing those players willing to try that they just needed some refining of skills, and an opportunity to compete.

With the results of the 3A Region 1 West District Championships held at Mansfield on April 25, the results proved promising for a refocused Tiger squad. The MHS men finished in their highest position in over a decade with a third place team score.

“For awhile, we held the top ranked time or distance in nine different events on the men’s side of the conference,” said Tiger Head Coach John Mackey. “Things were setting up for a really fun conference championship. Unfortunately, we had some bumps in the road losing some key people through injury and other issues just before conference play. Otherwise, a different outcome and a possible trophy grab goes the Tigers’ way.”

“This team went through several transformations throughout the year,” continued Mackey. “Our assistants did a super job with limited access to this talent pool.”

Mansfield was only 12 points away from a trophy at the conference event. Cedarville, the 2017 defending conference champions, edged the Tigers 136 to 124 for the runner-up prize. Elkins, the traditional power of the league, took top honors with a run-a-way 224 points.

Two of the first players to sign up were senior distance specialist Devon Pyles and sophomore speedster Jaicy Griffin. On a raining district finals, the pair accounted for 46.5 points of the Tiger team total.

Pyles won the 1600m and 3200m runs. He was also fourth in the 800m run and was a member of the second place 4x800m relay.

“Devon really is the silent leader of the team,” stated Mackey. “No one out works him. He is self motivated to be the best. Several small colleges asked about his availability next season. But, he’s already committed to the Army.”

Griffin won the 200m dash. He ran a second place 100m dash time that sent him to state in both events. Finally, he anchored a third place 4x100m relay team that was patched together a day before the finals.

That Griffin ran at all in the conference finals was a bit of a miracle. The tenth grader tweak a knee at the Quad City Meet in the long jump nine days before the conference showdown. Doctors evaluated the leg and granted Griffin a release 24 hours before districts.

Staff members in communication with the player’s parents decide on a limited schedule for the sprinter. The agreement included a reduced role of only short sprints. No jumps were allowed.

The sophomore was disappointment as he was almost assured another win in the long jump. Leading up to the finals, he was the league’s top rated long jumper with a 20’ 5.5” previous performance.

Garrett Wilson, a first year senior that decided to split his time between baseball and track, helped build a state qualifying 4x800m relay team. He was joined by freshman Victor Steffen, Netherlands native Joris Felius, and Pyles. Collectively the group ran 9:39.85 for a second place All-District mark.

Bryar Hattabaugh, another dual sport spring time athlete, found his way to the state round with All-District performances in the long and triple jumps.

It was at the triple jump pit that the senior shined. His leap of 40’ 11.5” bested the next closest competitor by nearly four feet.

Hattabaugh’s long jump went 19’ 3.25” for second place. An Elkins athlete went 20’ 2” for the win.

Freshman Renden Emery gave the Tigers a boost with scoring marks in five events. The first year player had his best outcome in the 300m hurdles. His 50.22 seconds over the eight barrier race landed him into third place.

Bri Sanderson, another freshman, climbed to third in the discus event. He threw the larger high school implement 99’ 10”.

Blayne Bryant and Curtis Griffin both scored in the pole vault as first time jumpers. Bryant also pointed in the 400m dash as well as the 4x400m relay.

Sophomore Jake Smith helped in the relays. Felius added in the distance events. Jacob Brown scored in the discus, and Steffen got a 300m hurdle point.

25th Annual United Way Day of Caring

By Tammy Moore Teague
The city of Mansfield participated in the United Way’s 25th annual Day of Caring on April 26. Volunteers gathered at the City Lake Park at East Broadway and began working shortly after 8:30 that morning. Some of the work included picking up trash, limbs, and clearing covered areas. Additionally, painting and touching paint on the park’s facilities.
Day of Caring promotes volunteerism and partnered with groups within six counties including Crawford, Franklin, LeFlore, Logan, Sebastian and Sequoyah. The projects are focused on relationships with local children, families and seniors. The team in Mansfield joined 1200 other volunteers taking on 116 projects across those counties. The volunteers, including the Mansfield FFA and the juvenile facility, partnered with local business Arcbest. “It’s our biggest to date,” said Mitzy Little, marketing director at United Way.
The success this year further exemplifies the motto of the United Way, “Great things happen when you live United.”

Longtime SRCA Site Director Retires

By Tammy Moore Teague
Edwards, a name that has always been synonymous with SRCA, has announced her retirement. Georgina Edwards will always be remembered by those at the Sebastian Retired Citizen’s Association and the community of Mansfield.
Edwards has served as site director for the past 32 years. During this time she’s seen multiple municipality changes, including the administration of both Mickey Chapman and Glen Hurt. “Mickey Chapman wrote my resume,” Edwards said. She was initially hired on as a cook in 1985 by Darlene Grandstaff. It was only months later that she was promoted to director.
Edwards continued to serve in that capacity at the city hall location. In 2001, through much determination, the new location on Highway 378 opened its doors. Glen Hurt served as mayor at that time. “I don’t think we would have the new center today without your leadership and dedication to the seniors of this whole area. It was truly a pleasure to turn the keys of the Mansfield Senior Center over to you when it was completed and let you run it as you knew how.”
The years and experiences have left a lasting legacy. Many friendships were forged over those years. Yet, this gave way to the most difficult aspect of her job. “The hardest thing about my job was when we would loose someone.” Edwards went on to add that she recalled attending four funeral services in one week. The feeling of loss and sadness comes as many participants over the years became like family.
There has been a great outpouring of love and well wishes from the community and coworkers towards Edwards. Hurt added”I wish you well in your retirement and want you to know that a lot of people love you for all the sacrifices you made for all of our parents and spouses for all these years.” SRCA employee Donna Elmore said hearing Edwards announce her retirement was one of the hardest days she’s had. “It was such a honor having Georgina for a boss. She does so much for our community and she is always there for our seniors whether it is to help them do something or to just sit and listen to what was going on in their lives. She truly cares for each and every one of them. We will miss her so much.
Edwards has had some health issues that have contributed to her decision for retirement, however she plans to return to the activity center to visit and even get in on a game of dominos. Although her position will be filled, she will never be replaced. “She’s got big shoes to fill,” added Elmore.
She is the daughter of Grace Tucker, whom herself is a pillar at the senior center. Additionally, Edwards has four siblings, JR Tucker, Dorothy Morris, Wilma Chick and Debbie Tucker. Her children are Gary Edwards, Donnie Edwards, Regina Oliver and Lisa Moore.
On behalf of Resident Press and myself I would like to join those who have expressed well wishes with continued prayers for health and healing. Thank you seems inadequate for all the compassion you’ve shown so many over the years. You are so very loved and appreciated!

Black Resigns Seat

By Tammy Moore Teague
The Mansfield City Council is again one alderman short as Buddy Black resigns his seat.
Black was a shoe in and filled the vacancy left by Nathan Sterling. Sterling resigned his seat abruptly during a heated council meeting in January.
However, after only a few months, ward two seat one is once again empty. Resident Press contacted Black for a statement regarding his resignation. “I had the best interest of Mansfield at heart in joining the city council, during my time on the council and now.”
Follow Resident Press as we report on who will be appointed to that position.

You Count 2020 Census

By Tammy Moore Teague

After signing a commitment, the City of Mansfield will be counted in the 2020 Census. This was one of the new mayor’s first order of business.

“It’s very important to get a head count,” City Recorder/Treasurer Becky Walker said. “Otherwise the city looses money.”
She went on to add that citizens should encourage their neighbors to participate.

This year will be the first time the census will be available online. This,  in an effort to simplify the process. This orifical count is a survey of the population and typically produces demographics information such as median income.

Resident Press will continue to keep its readers up to date on the status of census in our area.

Brunson Invited to Harvard University

This summer while most students are relaxing and enjoying their time away from school, Mansfield Middle School 7th grade student, Serenity Brunson will be spending a portion of her summer break at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

There she will have the opportunity to develop new global perspectives alongside student leaders from all over the world. She will be part of a team constructing an effective community action plan, and developing a Lead2Feed project.

Serenity will also be touring not only the Harvard campus, but she will explore Boston, JFK Presidential Library, and MIT.

Serentiy’s mother, Jennifer Brunson, stated, “Serenity works hard everyday at everything she does. I feel blessed to watch her grow and push herself to become better everyday. I believe the opportunity she has been given to go and tour Harvard, participate in community service projects and learning activities will be very beneficial in achieving her dream of one day becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon.”
