City of Mansfield Supports MMS Duo’s Recycling Effort

Article by Natalie Alliison
Mansfield Middle School 7th grade FBLA students, Natalie Allison (Left) and Kinley Hanfelder (Right) realized there was a need for Mansfield to start recycling. They put recycling bins in each hall way of the middle school, so the students could recycle their plastics, paper, and cardboard. That’s when the girls realized there was not a place to recycle tin cans in the town.
Natalie and Kinley then wrote a letter to acting Mansfield Mayor, Mrs. Becky Walker, asking if they could get a recycling bin for tin cans. Thanks to Natalie and Kinley and the help of Mrs. Walker, there is now a place to recycle tin cans. The girls want to thank Mrs. Walker so much for her support with this project. The girls want to encourage the towns people to help on recycling too! Please start recycling and drop off your recyclable goods at the Mansfield Water Department. Thank You!
You can read more about their efforts in an article we previously posted HERE

Hackett EAST Represents in Hot Springs

(Pictured Left to Right) Terrell Washington, Cass Moquett, and Liam Connally are all smiles as they pose in front of the EAST Conference enteance
The EAST Conference is the most anticipated event of the year for students enrolled in Environmental and Spatial Technology. Thousands of students, educators and guests converged on the Hot Springs Convention Center March 13-15 to celebrate success and share the projects they’ve been doing throughout the school year as part of an annual conference hosted by the EAST Initiative.

Liam Connally received First place in the Hacking category. Congrats!

EAST Con 18  included 240 EAST schools that set up booths in the event hall to display the service learning projects they have worked on during the year.  Student ambassadors from each school attended breakout sessions to get hands-on experience using advanced technology and to hear nationally acclaimed speakers who inspired them to accomplish new and challenging projects. These session provided the students with valuable information.
Hackett High School was well represented at conference by Terrell Washington, Cass Moquett and Liam Connally who made up this year’s EAST con 18 team.  These young men presented projects that Hackett EAST students worked on, to a panel of judges who scored our booth based on project sophistication, professionalism and use of technology.  Liam Connally competed in a contest “Office Hack”, presented by the United States Air Force National Guard, in which he was given five minutes to solve a computer problem. Liam finished 1st solving the problem in just over three minutes and was one of only two students to complete the task in the allotted time.  Every year students leave conference more excited and more energized to serve their communities than when they arrived which is the EAST goal.

Alma Fills In Junior Tigers Track Schedule

Above, Mansfield’s Shawn Brown throws shot put at Alma junior high meet.

Mansfield was searching for a track meet to fill the hole in their schedule when Paris had to cancel their normal rotation in the local track circuit. Alma’s Junior Airedale Relays became the remedy the Tigers needed on March 13.

It ended up a good night for the Tiger throwers on both the men’s and women’s side. Bri Sanderson, Blake Wilkins, Zayne Dugan, Shawn Brown, Skylynn Harris, and Brooke Wright all made noise.

Sanderson lead the MJH throwers with the best measures among all Tigers. The freshman hurler sailed the 1kg discus 118’ 2” for a seventh place award among the large school competition. He also put the shot a season best 38’ 3.5” for 11th place.

“It was good to see Bri unleash,” said Mansfield track Coach John Mackey. “His position coach, Dustin Payne, has really been after those guys to produce. This sets up well for the conference.”

The Mansfield men had all three discus throwers go over 100 feet. After Sanderson’s mark, it was Dugan at 104’ and Wilkins at 102’ 6”.

Brown came through with his best toss of the season with a 34’ 6” handle of the 4kg shot put ball. Brown, just an eight grader, pushed past his freshman teammate Wilkins who landed the implement at 33’ 6”.

Seventh grader Skylynn Harris established herself as a conference contender with a 33’ 7” shot put. She had already won a seventh grade meet and now scored 5th in her first junior high event.

Fresh Brooke Wright finally found the range in the discus by tossing 78’ 4”. That was the fourth place measure among all Alma contestants. She also pushed a season best 30’ 11” in the shot put.

Harris placed in the discus ring also. She flew the implement passed the 76’ 7” mark for 6th place.

Brandon Carver doubled production in the vertical jumps by taking two 4th place awards. The first of which was a 9’ 6” pole vault. The other was a 5’ 6” high jump placement.

Sadie Roberts off the junior girl’s squad did something similar by taking 4th in the high jump at 4’ 6” and clearing 6’ 0” for 5th place in the pole vault.

The Lady Tiger’s 4x800m relay team surprised by moving into 5th place at Alma. Hope Rainwater give the team a boost when she took the lead leg around in 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Seventh grader Olivia Bouse continued momentum with a 2 minute 50 second next position.

Hope’s twin sister, Faith Rainwater, did what a twin should. She ran an identical split of 2:55 at the third spot.

McKenzie Griffin hauled home the baton giving the collective team a 11:54.83 measurement for the 5th place prize.

Another surprise came from fellow eight grader Shelby Cole. For the second consecutive week, Cole came on strong in the 300m hurdles. Her time of 56.24 was the third top score at Alma, and remains the best among Mansfield girl hurdlers.

Seventh grader Madelen Jones beat many of her older competitors to sneak in an eighth place award at the 300m barrier race. She was clocked at 59.09 in only her third career race.

Carver was a scorer on the men’s version of the 300m style hurdles. Her went 49.49 for eighth place.

Ethan Chapman was the Tiger’s top distance runner. He went 5:33 in a very competitive 1600m run for 13th place. Steven Perez was close behind at 5:54.

Brysin Cape had a good showing in the 400m dash in his first track meet. He was clocked at 1:07.42. Ryan Hayslip was back of that but finished about 12 seconds faster than his last time out with a 1:11.07.

Tigers To Host Annual Track and Field Meets

Mansfield has been hosting track meets every year since the new high school was built in 2004. This will be the 14th consecutive year the Tigers have played host to the Tiger Relays.

On March 26, 27, and 29 the buzz about town will be the goings on at Mansfield’s Track Complex. With plenty of schools expected, the competition should be fulfilling for even the most casual observer.

In the past, Mansfield has accepted as many as 27 schools into their track facilities on any given one night. More of the same is expected as the Tigers host a Ribbon Run for seventh graders on Monday, March 26. The senior high event will join the action on Tuesday, March 27. Then the relays conclude with a junior high meet on Thursday, March 29.

Mansfield already hosted a small scale seventh grade meet on March 14. They are expected to host three more events later in the year with the Quad City Meet and both junior and senior high districts meets. That puts the school hosting seven events on the season.

“We want to take advantage of our facilities,” said Mansfield Coach John Mackey. “Many of our neighbors have let their tracks go. Ours was redone last season so we want to thank those responsible by offering up a first hand account of it’s use. It’s good for our local businesses as well. So many people come rolling into town during these events.”

Tiger home track meets typically start at 4:00 PM with field events. Running events generally take place about one and a half hours later. Depending on the number of teams, events could last until 8:30 to 10:00 PM.

Mansfield Track Hosts 4 Team Beginner Meet

Above, Mansfield seventh grader Natalie Allison wins the pole vault at Bonneville.

After Paris declared their track unsafe for running, Mansfield stepped up and held an impromptu practice meet for four area schools.

Normally, the Tigers would have headed over to Paris this time of year for a three night binge of track and field. PHS school officials came to the realization that their facilities were no longer up to standards to host meets. So, Mansfield went looking for places to play and they came up with a simple solution.

Mansfield sent their junior teams to Alma, senior teams to Gravette, and then decided to keep the local seventh graders close to home with a meet of their own.

To avoid a hit to an already small seventh grade schedule, it was Mansfield’s purpose to get their rookie runners at least some competition before spring break. Waldron, Mena, and Magazine were asked to the intimate four team affair and gladly accepted Wednesday, March 14th’s invitation.

Mansfield’s seventh grade boys excelled in certain areas. The small crew won both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays as well a pair of field events.

The combination of Tommy Phang, Gage Rogers, Logan Cravey, and Branson Carver gave the Tigers victory in both sprint relays. It was the team’s first win against two tries in the 4x100m event. It was the team’s second consecutive victory in the 4x400m relay.

Trenton Leroy did well in the pole vault for the second straight week. The first time competitor was the leading jumper just like he was at Booneville a week earlier.

Branson Carver was heads up in the men’s high jump. He repeated as a top jumper once again like he did at the Bearcat Relays in Booneville.

Madelen Jones saw victory in the women’s 100m hurdles. Teammate Megean Newman was fourth overall. Jones was also the top Tiger in the 300m style hurdles.

Newman, Jones, Natalie Allison, and Serenity Brunson also forged the Lady Tiger’s 4x100m relay. Lita Hecox, Jadelynn Wood, Olivia Bouse, and Jones made up the 4x400m team. This last relay event was a win for Mansfield.

Jones was the top high jumper for the night in the women’s competition. The first year player cleared 4’ 4” with solid technique giving her momentum to continue a proud tradition in Tiger vertical events.

Ashton Hinkle, Cravey, Phang, and Tyler Woolbright handled most of the jumping duties for the Mansfield men. Kendall Noblitt and Clinton Stovall also joined the jump party at the triple jump pit.

Braxton Byers, Codee Helms, and Levi Cothran were solid in the both the shot and discus. Byers also took a turn in the long jump pit.

Cassidy Carlton, Wood, Allison, and Bouse partnered in the 4x800m relay for the girls. Bouse was the group’s top time when comparing splits.

Trinity Woods, Chloe Jones, and Bethany Sartin all saw action respectively in the middle distance, sprint, and distance races for MMS.

Skylynn Harris dominated the shot and discus. She was joined by Alayna Swanger, Alayna Turner, and Seven Sanderson.

Rylie Puterbaugh and Gary Willis were involved in the 100m and 200m dashes respectively for their teams.
