The Greenwood Freshman Bulldogs used a pair of explosive first-half plays and a strong defensive effort to take a 14-7 advantage into halftime against Fayetteville.
Greenwood’s opening possession came to an end on downs after Bentley Renick’s pass intended for Mason Bercher fell incomplete. Fayetteville took advantage on its ensuing possession, finding the end zone with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point gave the Purple Bulldogs an early 7-0 advantage. Greenwood didn’t trail for long. Just 51 seconds later, Renick broke loose and raced 60 yards for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the night. The extra point split the uprights, evening the score at 7-7 with 3:54 remaining in the opening quarter. The Greenwood defense then began to settle in. After dropping Fayetteville for a loss, the Purple Bulldogs found themselves facing third-and-14. Fayetteville went to its quarterback on the ground, but Mason Mizell was there to make the stop. Greenwood’s defense finished off the stand on fourth down, forcing a turnover on downs.
The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the second quarter. Truitt Embree put Greenwood in front with 7:51 remaining in the half, finding running room and taking it into the end zone. Another successful extra point gave Greenwood a 14-7 lead. Fayetteville threatened to answer, driving deep into Greenwood territory, but the Bulldogs’ defense stiffened in the red zone and once again turned Fayetteville away on downs. Greenwood looked to add to its lead before the break when Parker Spencer broke loose for a long run that carried the Bulldogs across midfield. The drive eventually stalled on downs, sending Greenwood into halftime holding a 14-7 advantage.
The second half quickly turned into a defensive battle. Fayetteville opened the half with a punt, and Greenwood was forced to do the same after taking a deep shot downfield from Titus Archer. The defenses continued trading stops, with Fayetteville punting on its next possession before Greenwood was again forced to punt the ball away. With Greenwood still holding onto its one-score advantage, Fayetteville finally broke through late in the game. The Purple Bulldogs found the end zone on the ground with 1:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, setting up a dramatic finish after Greenwood had kept Fayetteville off the scoreboard for nearly three quarters.
