The Dari: Home Cooked Food Done Right

At any given time, you can roll down West Center Street in Greenwood, and you’ll be sure to find a packed out parking lot, and lots of hungry diners inside.

The Dari, located at 675 West Center Street, is consistently busy for a reason. The food is good, the prices are right, and the atmosphere is clean.

The former Mazzios location was converted into the current modern space. Since it’s opening in September 2018, customers have continued to come back for more home cooked food, uniquely flavored brewed teas, and daily specials.

The location is serving more than the Greenwood community. People drive from Fort Smith, Mansfield and Waldron to enjoy the delicious menu offerings.

Owner Sammy Hassen is completely vested in the community, and works right along with his staff. The restaurant has also aided the community by sponsoring fundraisers.

The Dari is open daily from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. You can order by phone, and pickup in the drive-thru, or sit down inside and enjoy some family time.

Pyles Honored for Service at Sheriff’s Office

On Friday, February 7, Scott County Sheriff Randy Shores, and fellow deputies honored a long-time member of the department.

D.J. Pyles has served as a deputy at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for the past 15 years. Pyles’ concluded his full-time career as deputy the week of February 2, but plans to continue serving as a reserve deputy.

Pyles stated, “I have decided to take a new career path and will be working for Walden Security at the federal courthouse in Fort Smith. I will always cherish the memories and the friendships I have made while I’ve been employed here. Serving in my hometown and serving the people of Waldron and Scott County has been a blessing and a honor. To all my brothers and sisters I’ve worked with in the green and blue, it’s been a privilege to do so...I’m very thankful for having worked here for 15 years…I loved working for Cody Carpenter, Terry Staggs and Randy Shores. All were very good Sheriffs to work for. I’ll miss being there, but life is about changes and I feel the Lord has opened this door for me and I wanted to see where it leads.”

Sheriff Shores expressed his gratitude for the time Pyles has spent at the department and wished him the best of luck in his new venture.

Paris Jr. Lady Eagles Bounce Back With Big Win Over Perryville

After a disappointing loss to Booneville on Monday night, it remained to be seen how the Paris junior Lady Eagles would react with tough games remaining against Perryville and Jessieville at the end of the week. With a tough road game tonight at Jessieville, the Lady Eagles may have sent a message last night with a convincing home win against the Perryville Jr. Lady Mustangs by the score of 23-14. Paris freshmen played their final home junior high game Thursday and produced a defensive gem that held the Lady Mustangs to just 14 points on the night. The Lady Eagles played without their coach, Dustin Williams, who was ejected at the end of the game Monday night versus Booneville. Assistant coach Donald Hart coached the Lady Eagles Thursday night. Williams will return to the bench tonight to coach Paris at Jessieville.

Commenting today, Coach Williams said, “The girls played extremely hard and executed the game plan to perfection. Coach Hart stepped into and coached a great game. So proud of our girls and coaching staff.”

Brailey Forst led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jayden Wells had 5 points and 3 assists. Rachel O’Neal had 4 points, and Annalise Stanford added 1 point in the Paris win.

The Paris junior Eagles boys team lost a heart-breaker to Perryville by the score of 40-37. The game was tight for the entire night until Perryville was able to pull out to a small lead late in the game. Paris continued to fight and pulled within 3 points with less than a minute to go, but could not make a final shot to send the game into overtime. After the game, Paris coach Mike Foster said, “I thought our kids played hard and I am proud of their effort, especially without a key starter. Illness and injuries have hit us this week going into district, but these kids will bounce back.” The junior Eagles are now 15-7 on the year, and will play at Jessieville tonight. Jesse Wells led the Eagles with 16 points.

Tonight is the final regular season game for the junior Eagles and Lady Eagles. The conference standings will be finalized with the conclusion of tonight’s games. District tournament seedings will be determined tonight, and the junior district tournament will start tomorrow at Perryville High School. As soon as the standings, seedings, and game times are known, RP will publish a special update for our readers.

The Paris senior high Eagles and Lady Eagles will play tonight at Jessieville following the completion of the preliminary junior high games. The Lady Eagles are in a “must win” situation if they have any hope of taking third place in the conference. Additionally, Paris needs to win to keep pace with fifth place Atkins who has played well recently and is making a move to take over fourth place from Paris. It is important for both the senior boys and girls teams to finish the next ten days playing good basketball to go into the district tournament with positive momentum.

Jr Lady Tigers Smooth Sailing Against Greenland

When it came to facing Greenland this past Tuesday night, “The junior Lady Tigers had an unenthusiastic first half of the game. We went through the motions and it ended with a 10-5 score going into halftime,” explained coach, Joshua Bryan. “After the halftime talk, the Lady Tigers came out with the same fire we’ve seen all season outscoring Greenland 23-13 in the third quarter. The unselfish play of our girls helped propel the Lady Tigers past the Lady Pirates in their decisive 33-16 victory.”

Kynslee Ward

Alyson Edwards led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 points followed by Brooklyn Adams with eight, Natalie Allison with seven, Harlie Fuller with four, and Seven Sanderson with three. The Jr squad also finished with 15 total rebounds, seven blocks, 13 assists, and 15 steals with Kynslee Ward leading with five of those steals along with three assists. “I’m am also very pleased with how well our bench players produced. It’s always a great feeling to have as a coach when you have depth at every position.”

Harlie Fuller

In their final game before Districts, the Jr Lady Tigers will go head-on with the West Fork Lady Tigers on Friday, February 7 starting at 4 p.m at home. The first round of District play will be on Monday, February 10 in Lincoln.

Sr Lady Tigers Surf Red Waves Past Lady Pirates

The Mansfield Sr Lady Tigers upgraded their conference record to 2-9 after Tuesday nights big win against the Greenland Lady Pirates. Ending the match with a final score of 36-24, it was just the kind of encouragement that the Lady Tigers needed to ignite that spark of determination to finish their season with a bang. “The senior Lady Tigers played well Tuesday night,” stated coach, Joshua Bryan. “We moved the ball better on offense and drove the lane more than in our previous few games.”

Sadie Roberts

“We did better in the rebounding department but we still allowed Greenland to have multiple second-chance opportunities, something we’ve been working on.” The Lady Tigers ended the evening with 13 steals with Danielle Lillie, Haylee Helms, and Sadie Roberts combining for nine of those. Offensively, Mansfield earned six rebounds with Amber Elmore netting three. And defensively, the Lady Tigers snagged 20 rebounds with Brooke Wright and Chloe Creekmore obtaining five rebounds each.

Maia Crespo

“I was excited by the play of the girls off the bench. They did well and accounted for three points, eight rebounds, four steals, two deflections and one blocked shot.”  Roberts and Wright led their team with ten points apiece followed by Lillie with nine, Creekmore with four, and Elmore with three. “The area I’m impressed with the most is our offensive post play. We are much improved from the beginning of the season in getting points from our fours and fives.” With conference play winding down for the Sr Lady Tigers, they will next take on the (6-5) West Fork Lady Tigers at home on Friday, February 7.

Sr Rattlers Continue To Fight For Season

Pictured is Brady Watson

The Magazine Sr High Rattlers recently suffered heartbreaking losses in their last two basketball matches against Mountainburg and Danville. With only a two-point gap in their final score with the Dragons, Magazine walked away with the scoreboard reading 41-39. Working hard day and night, the Rattlers consistently continue to show improvement on the court. In a handful of their games this season, Magazine has only lost by a few points to opponents with talent loaded rosters proving that the Rattlers can go toe-to-toe with anybody they face on the hardwood.

The Rattlers earned three steals, eight offensive rebounds and 22 defensive rebounds in their game against the Dragons. Kaedon Trejo netted 14 points while earning 12 of those from four three-pointers. Cameron Raggio brought in 12 points. Ashton Droemer snagged seven. And Brady Watson secured six.

On Tuesday, February 4, Magazine faced off with the Danville Little Johns and although they came up short 41-33, the Rattlers know where the mistakes were made and will continue to push themselves to finish the season strong. “We struggled to put the ball in the basket,” explained coach, Buck Chappell. “We can’t beat anyone shooting 27%. We were down as much as 16 and got back to two at one point but turnovers hurt us at crucial moments of the match. The boys worked hard and fought the whole game. I still feel like we can finish this season strong and do something great. I believe in these boys and I won’t stop believing!”

Droemer ended the game with 13 points followed by Raggio with eight, Trejo and Jacob Hall with five each, and Watson with two. The Rattlers also earned eight steals and 30 total rebounds. Magazine now sits 4-14 in total season play, 1-8 in conference, and hold a grand total of 748 points. Next up, Magazine will host the (3-6) Hackett Hornets on Friday, February 7. In the first round of conference play, the Rattlers overpowered the Hornets 47-45 in an over the top round of ball. Tonight, fans are sure to expect the same kind of fight and intensity from both of these teams in round two.

JV Jr Lady Tigers Wax Floors With Lavaca In Scrimmage

Pictured is Eden Mounts

The Mansfield Jr Lady Tigers high jacked a bus and ran off to Lavaca on Wednesday, February 5 to get some extra practice in before their final conference game until the District Tournament. The scrimmage gave the JV squad some great floor time and experience against a formidable foe in the Lavaca Lady Golden Arrows. Scrimmage or not, Lady Tigers basketball is Lady Tigers basketball and losing is unacceptable in their eyes. Due to that mentality, the JV squad warped the Golden Arrows with a 23-20 victory.

Seven Sanderson

One would expect some rust and inconstancy from a JV squad, but that was not the case in the scrimmage. The Junior JV Lady Tigers perfected in your face defense. There were no easy buckets for Lavaca with Mansfield smothering their players from one end of the court to the other. Offensively, the girls showed great individual and team skills with some sweet passing and ankle-breaking dribbling. Scoring wasn’t exactly the JVs strong point, but they were able to rack up just enough to do what they traveled to Lavaca to do….WIN.

Lita Hecox and Raine Hecox

Mansfield girls’ coach, Joshua Bryan said “Like with our senior high, having depth on your team proves that when you’re missing out on key positions, someone can step into that role and produce. Getting another game in before districts was critical for us to work on our depth. The Lady Tigers did well for the most part. We still got a little frustrated too easily at the start but began to work better the longer the game went on. Seeing the open girl went better towards the end of the game. Like I told Lavacas Coach Wyles, if the JV game helped one girl get better, it’s worth the drive every time.”

Brooklyn Adams

Seven Sanderson led the team with seven points in the game and tacked on four rebounds and two steals to boot. Raine Hecox was like a cat burglar snatching five steals in the game. Eden Mounts was hot on the heels of the Lady Arrows grabbing four steals. Lita Hecox earned “Queen of the Mountain” status as she led the Lady Tigers with five rebounds off of the backboards. Brooklyn Adams continued to show Tiger fans she can do it all as she rolled up five points and three rebounds. Serenity Brunson and Cassidy Carlton combined for five rebounds and created havoc on Lavacas offense all game.

The Lady Tiger starters

The starting five did get some time in the game off and on to keep them fresh. Alyson Edwards sank six points while Skylynn Harris, Natalie Allison, Harlie Fuller, and Kynslee Ward combined for five points. The starting crew also totaled four rebounds and four steals in the battle. With a good scrimmage under their belt, the Jr Lady Tigers are warmed up and ready for what could be the most important game of their season as they host West Fork on Friday, February 7 at 4 p.m. A victory puts the Jr Lady Tigers in first place going into District Tournament play.

Sr Lady Bulldogs Blown Down By Big Bad Wolves

After winning their last two games against Mansfield and Cedarville, the Waldron Sr High Lady Bulldogs’ loss against the Lincoln Lady Wolves on Tuesday night was a hard pill to swallow. The Lady Bulldogs fell short 56-39 which brings their conference record to 4-7 and puts them at 945 total points on the season. “We came out flat which is something we can’t do in a big-time conference match up,” explained coach Josh Atchley. “We started to play with some urgency but it was too little too late. We must move on and be better if we want to achieve our goals. I’m always proud of these girls.”

Leading the “Epic Eight” offensively was Rheagan Sanford with 15 points, Chelsea Stidman with 10, Hailey Stidman with nine, Kadance Espinoza and Molly Richmond with two apiece, and Jessica Ozuna with one. The Lady Bulldogs brought in eight steals with Sanford leading with three, 17 offensive rebounds and 18 defensive rebounds with Hailey Stidman leading the pack with nine and six respectively.

Up next, Waldron will be hosting a huge game against the Charleston Lady Tigers on Friday, February 7. The Tigers are undefeated 11-0 in conference play and hold a 20-2 total play record. Friday is also Eddie Night in remembrance of Eddie Harrison so fans are being asked to wear green. The night will kick off at 4:30 p.m.

Sr Tigers Send Pirates Swimming With The Fishes

Pictured is Isaac Cothran

The Mansfield Sr High Tigers are making a comeback! Head Coach, Keith Dake seems to think it has to do with a certain outfit. “I think its partly due to my lucky shirt and tie. So yes, I will continue to wear it as long as we keep winning. I’m even debating not washing it!” Last night all four Mansfield teams hosted the Greenland Pirates and after both Jr High teams as well as the Sr High Lady Tigers secured wins, the Tigers were determined more than ever to make it a four-game sweep.

Ethan Stovall

Mission accomplished. After four intense quarters, the Tigers sent the Pirates sailing with a 58-52 loss. Layton Howard led his team with 22 points followed by Ethan Stovall with 15 and Codi Chick with 13. “Coming out of a bad loss to Elkins and continually getting decimated by the flu, I was genuinely concerned about how we may respond to such adversity. But our guys stepped up and responded the way good teams are supposed to respond, and that’s with a hard-fought victory.”

Layton Howard

“Most of the game was spent within one point of each other, battling through all four quarters. Games such as these are when depth is so important. So missing varsity players, Jaicy Griffin and Jojo Bailey, was a huge hit. But we had numerous guys step up and fill those roles flawlessly. As the regular season comes to a close, we couldn’t have picked a better time to start gaining momentum.”

Tyler Holmes

The win upgrades Mansfield to 8-11 in total season play and 4-7 in conference. “This moves the boys Sr High team into a top 4 seed and we continue to climb the rankings. We have a four-game night again this Friday, February 7 against the (1-9) West Fork Tigers. Make sure and come out to support the teams this Friday night!”
