The Lady Hornets held on to each set with a firm grip and walked away with all three wins. With scorecards reading 25-18, 25-11, 25-17, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t just lay down and give victory to Hackett. The Lady Hornets had to swoop, slam, and swat the Lady Bulldogs until their task was achieved.

The Hackett Lady Hornets are the true definition of teamwork always supporting one another and guiding each other through any problem areas that might occur. In true fashion, the Lady Hornets banded together and got the job done. Ending the night in the stats department was Rain Vaughn with nine kills. Rattlers XC Makes A Run For It At Caddo Hills

The Magazine Cross Country Rattlers have more legs than a bucket of chicken. And after dominating yet again in their most recent meet, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the Rattlers are just getting warmed up in their cross country season. The bad news (for the competition) is that the Rattlers are just getting warmed up in their cross country season. In cross country, running is the name of the game. And after this past weekends Caddo Hills Indian Run, it’s evident that the Magazine Rattlers have established that skill.

Running the 5K for the boys’ Sr High team was Carter Ryan who grabbed 17th with his time of 17:10. Joseph Posey hooked 39th with a time of 19:51. And with a time of 25:49 was Hayden Davis rounding out at 59th. Junior, Carlee Parrish was the lone runner for the Sr High girls’ team. Parrish conquered 15th place with her time of 23:51.

Carlee Parrish

For the 2400 Meter Run, it was the boys’ Jr High squad that really stole the show. Finishing with an 11:27 team average, the boys finished the meet with a third-place victory. Sam Warner snagged second place with a run time of 9:20 while Allen Newby bagged 10th place at 9:48. AJ Maloof commanded the 19th spot with a time of 10:18. And rounding out the 38th and 56th spots were Aiden Carter and Jaxon Pickartz with their run time of 11:52 and 15:58 respectively. The only runners for the Jr High girls’ team were ninth graders, Charity Crawford and Trinity Bull who wangled 45th and 46th with their times of 14:46 and 14:49.

The Magazine Rattlers will compete in their next cross country meet on September 24 in Clarksville.

Sr Lady Tigers Untiring And Unshakable

To say that the Mansfield Sr High Lady Tigers have been hard at work in the last two weeks is an understatement. After engaging in their sixth match last Thursday, this time against the Paris Lady Eagles, the Lady Tigers then turned around for their second weekend tournament in a row and endured a day filled with battling competitors at the Slamfest Volleyball Tournament in Harrison, Ar over the past weekend.

Mansfield held their own against Paris but in the end, they succumbed to a 3-0 loss with scores tallied at 25-14, 25-23, and 25-14. The Lady Tigers earned some impressive stats individually as well. Brooke Wright conquered 10 kills, two blocks, and one dig. Sadie Roberts helmed four blocks, six kills, and two digs. Kiara Thomas commanded three kills and five digs. Danielle Lillie held her grip on seven digs, one ace, and 2 kills. And Haylee Helms, Vanessa Noblitt, and Maggie Strunk conquered 17, nine, and three digs respectively.

The Lady Tigers mastered a great run at Slamfest bringing in a third-place victory. After engaging in matches against Valley Springs, Hackett, and Highland, the girls took two out of three wins. The Mansfield Lady Tigers now sit with an 8-6 overall season record and a conference play record of 2-2. Up next, Mansfield will travel to West Fork on September 17 to take on the Lady Tigers with game play starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Fight Continues For Sr Bulldogs

Pictured is #21 Seth Hunt

Although Friday nights loss against the Paris Eagles was a hard pill for Waldron to swallow, it was not enough to obstruct their breathing. It was merely a lesson of what needed to be worked on to ensure that the Bulldogs are ready for their Elk hunt in the first conference game of the season against Elkins in two weeks. After falling to Paris 28-24, Waldron now sits 0-2 on the season.

One thing that opponents realize real quickly when facing a Bulldog is that they don’t get mad, they get even. The Bulldogs are simply toying with their competition and as soon as the other teams let their guard down that is when Waldron will sweep in to subdue the opposition.

At the start of their game against Paris, Waldron was quick right out of the gate in putting points up and establishing dominance. Quarterback, Braden Williams, made a clean pass to Caden Fuller for a Bulldog touchdown and with the extra 2 point conversion made by Seth Hunt, the game was officially underway 8-0 Waldron.

With 48 seconds left in the first quarter, Fuller flew in like a ninja and intercepted the Eagles ball. Ethan Slater and Elijah Polen teamed up to snag a safety and obtained two points upgrading the Bulldogs to a 10-0 lead. In the second quarter, senior Carson Cain blazed the ball into the endzone and with the added two-point conversion by Hunt, Waldron was standing tall with an 18-0 blowout.

Only minutes remained in the half, and Paris put their first touchdown on the board sending the game into halftime with Waldron leading 18-6. After the Eagles scored again at the start of the second half, Cain rushed for a Bulldog touchdown and Waldron kept the upper hand with a score of 24-12. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs reign would be shut down as the Eagles would put up two more touchdowns ending the game 28-24.

The Waldron defense was without a doubt on top of their A-game. The line stood solid like a statue against the Eagles and let it be known early on that this was going to be no walk in the park for Paris. Helping to embed the Bulldogs 41 total tackles was Fuller and Dayton Lovett with seven each. Polen and Matthew Tegtmeyer with five apiece. Bringing in four was Bryson Bailey. Securing three each was Slater and Gabino Grano. Cain and Blake Owens knocked out two each. And with one apiece was Williams, Hunt, and Fernando Uribe.

The Waldron Bulldogs will host one more nonconference game on September 20 against the 1-1 Danville Little Johns at 7 p.m. The conference season will get underway on September 27 at Elkins.

City of Huntington Hires New Police Chief

The Huntington City Council met on Monday, September 16, and voted to hire Stacy Wieburg as Chief of Police.

According to Mayor Gary Lawrence, they had interviewed several candidates for the position and that he was “glad to have him (Wieburg) back.”

Wieburg got his start in the City of Huntington as a reserve patrol officer six years ago. He will rejoin the department, this time, however, as Police Chief.

“I am excited to go back to Huntington,” Wieburg stated. Adding, “I will work hard to do a good job.”

He is currently an officer with the Mansfield Police Department, and was voted 2019 Officer of the Year.

According to Mayor Lawrence, Wieburg will take over the first week of October.

Suspect Arrested on Drug Possession Charges Following Traffic Stop

On Saturday evening, September 14, Mansfield Patrol Officer Josh Huskey made a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle heading south from Huntington to Mansfield.

Huskey observed the male driver acting nervous, and inquired if he had anything illegal inside the vehicle. The suspect stated that he did, and gave a consent to search.

Upon searching Huskey identified 24 pint bottles of Promethazine with Codeine. One of those pint bottles had been opened, and poured into the 20 ounce bottles, which the driver was allegedly drinking.

Mansfield Police Chief Wayne Robb stated “he was getting high as he drove down the road.” According to Robb, the driver, who is from Springdale, AR, took ownership and was arrested for being in possession of a schedule II class drug.

“This is a drug that you can only have a small amount of with a prescription,” stated Robb.

According to him, the liquid can be used to make methamphetamine or be made into pill form. Depending on how it’s sold, it has a street value between $2,000-$5,000. Officer Huskey also confiscated $800 in cash during the arrest.

The case is currently being investigated further by the Sebastian County Drug Task Force.

Charleston Defeats Scrappy Lavaca Lady Arrows 3-0

As the team was preparing to leave West Fork last week following a third victory of the week, I asked Charleston coach Ryan Rachuy about the non-conference game at Lavaca coming up on Monday. Coach Rachuy described Lavaca as “scrappy” and said that they had to prepare for a fight, because that’s what Lavaca would bring. Rachuy’s words proved to be prophetic as the Lady Tigers swept the Lady Golden Arrows at Lavaca on Monday night, but had their hands full with the scrappy Lady Golden Arrows. Charleston (8-1, 4-1) will return home on Thursday to resume its conference schedule with Mansfield.

Coach Rachuy was pleased with his team’s performance and had tremendous respect for the Lavaca effort. “Those girls (the Lavaca team) are good volleyball players. Great atmosphere here. Great people. It’s a good rivalry. There have been times when Charleston /Lavaca, Charleston / Paris, Charleston / Mansfield, it gets chippy. But what I’ve found in volleyball is that there is a lot of respect for the girls on the teams, as long as the teams show that respect back, and we do. I am really proud of our girls of how they handled things. I think they handle things really well. They showed some character that goes back to their parents. I’ve got good parents; very proud of the parents that I have. I’m really blessed to be able to coach at Charleston. Especially when you are able to come into an area like this and play tough volleyball. They (Lavaca) have some injuries and I know they have some players who were not able to play tonight. I know their libero has some wrist issues; they’re hurting all over. But they played their rears ends off.”

Charleston now returns home for a Thursday night match with the Mansfield Lady Tigers. Mansfield, a program with multiple state championships in volleyball as part of their team’s history, promises to bring another highly-competitive match to Charleston. Mansfield is coached by perhaps its most prolific player in its program’s history, Kaylie Pyles. Pyles was the MVP of the 2013 Mansfield state championship tournament team. “We play a Mansfield team, they’ve got a couple of losses under them, but I tell you, after I have gotten to see a little bit of the last scores of their matches, they’re coming on. Coach Kaylie Pyles, we have a lot of respect for her. She’s a former player over there, won state titles over there. She knows what to demand from those girls, and I’ve got a lot of respect for that program. We’re going to have to get ourselves ready. We’re going to have to come out like we did tonight and really get after it and make sure we are doing what we have to do.”

Although Monday night’s victory at Lavaca was a non-conference match, it was a tough road victory over a very good volleyball team. The Charleston victory, in a tough atmosphere, could pay off down the line for the Lady Tigers. And they will need it. For now, it is the resumption of a tough remaining conference schedule for the Lady Tigers that begins Thursday night.

You won’t want to miss Thursday’s game. The gym will be full of Tigers from both schools.

Jr Tigers Exchange Blows With Golden Arrows

It was a close hard-fought battle between the Mansfield Jr High Tigers and the Lavaca Golden Arrows. The Tigers stayed hot on the Arrows trail but in the end, fell with a final score of 35-24 Lavaca. The Tigers are still working on trying to find their football footing but when that happens, chances are there’s going to be an earthquake.

#7 Logan Cravey

Freshman, Logan Cravey was first to put a touchdown on the board with a pass from Quarterback, Fisher Willsey. Cravey completed 3 receptions for a total of 75 yards in the game. Willsey finished with 10 passes for 166 yards. After the touchdown from Cravey, Drew Elmore added the extra 2 point conversion and the score was brought to 27-8 Lavaca.

#11 Fisher Willsey

The Tigers really came to life in the second half of the game. With 20 seconds left in the third quarter, Clint Stovall took a pass from Willsey and with a quarterback keeper for the two-point conversion, and the game upgraded to 35-16 Lavaca. In the fourth quarter with 2 minutes left, Tyler Turnipseed took the ball in for a Tiger touchdown and with Tyler Woolbrights two-point conversion, the game came to a 35-24 close.

#2 Raine Hecox

Mansfield ended with 280 total yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The future looks bright for the Jr High Tigers who will stay home for their next match-up against the Paris Eagles on September 19 at 7 p.m.

Sr Lady Bulldogs Give Lincoln Digs For Days

It doesn’t faze the Waldron Sr High Lady Bulldogs one bit if they play their matches at home or away. This well-polished volleyball team gets the job done with ease no matter where they’re chained down. Recently, the Lady Bulldogs took the win 3-0 in all three sets against the Lincoln Lady Wolves. Although Lincoln gave Waldron a run for their money, they took the lead 25-15, 25-17, and 25-13.

Helping to lock down the team total of 29 digs and 10 aces were Bayleigh Lipham, Kentucky Spence, Taylor Stacy, Karissa Johnston, Rheagan Sanford, Ashton Young, and Anastasia Lynch. Lipham led the team with 4 aces and Young led with 7 digs. Waldron now sits 4-1 in conference play and 5-4 in overall season play.

The Lady Bulldogs are more than ready for their next nonconference match when they will face the 5-0 Hackett Lady Hornets at home on September 16 starting at 4 p.m.

Sr Pirates Continue To Light Em’ Up

The Sr High Cedarville Pirates have done it again. After their massive 65-27 win over the Bigelow Panthers, the Pirates have started the season undefeated 3-0 which is something that hasn’t been achieved in over a decade. This accomplishment is largely due to the fact that the Pirates have solidarity that brings them together to make magic happen on the field.

With a total of 43 carries and 593 rushing yards, Cedarville is pushing the limits to make this season on for the books. The Pirates offense was ablaze with their lightning speed and spur-of-the-moment footwork. Kelin Mitchell earned 9 carries for 198 yards and one touchdown. Darryl Kattich snagged 13 carries for 161 yards and 3 touchdowns. And Hayden Partain netted 4 carries for 38 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cedarville’s defense can always be counted on to stand firm against any opponents offense. And when it came to holding the Panthers, that’s just what they did. The Pirate defense helped in establishing a 38 point lead while also keeping the wins column movin’ on up. Cedarville will rest up during their bye week and then be ready for road play against Lamar on September 27 at 7 p.m.
